Somebody mentioned getting on Top Band to see how his new Wellbrook loop
was working - wonder if that person is lurking about and can comment on how
it performed.
That antenna sure seems to be getting rave review from many EU stations -

I put one up last autum and have compared it with my Titanex V160HD .
At this quiet location I had to realise that nothing was gained, which was
a disappointment !

Well my homebrew 2m diameter 160m mag loop outperforms my ALA-1530
Wellbrook Loop on TB every time.
It often beats my Bevs also!

From G4GED,I based my Mag Loop on an article by G3XGC in the
 Practical Wireless
  Mag March 2007.
 Seehttp://web.me.com/geoff.cottrell/G3XGC/Radio_articles.html
and select the article A noise reduction receive antenna for 1.8Mhz,

I used LDF 4-50 hard line coax which meets the electrical
requirements and is very tough weather resistant.

I've tried all the other loop type RX ants like Flags, Pennants, etc
 without
any success but this Mag Loop has been a godsend to me and is now my
 1st
choice, even before the Bevs. It's made all the difference many
times over, by gaining a new one or not on TB. It's sited about 150ft
from my TX vertical and picks up no detectable noise from it. I can
email photos of my interpretation on request.
  Good Luck

Topband: progress with the antenna adventures

2012-04-09 Thread Bill Cromwell
Hi,

I whizzed up an L network to put on my wire after the Murch disaster.
Instead of making something more elaborate using my roller inductor, I
used a tapped coil (with alligator clips) and a large value dual cap
from a broadcast receiver (yes - using low power). I will need either
more inductance or more capacitance. Adding a switched in cap seems to
be the better idea. I run out cap just when the swr starts it's
nosedive. 80, 40, 30, and 20 have clearly defined sweet spots and a few
on-air tests are encouraging. The RBN is down at the moment. When it
comes back up I'll make use of it to help gage results, too. When I get
a handle on the parameters for my network I'll get around to a nicer
project with that roller inductor and some *big* caps in a big metal
box.

That Murch needs a lot of work to ever work with my kind of antennas.
Maybe I should offer it in trade for something more useful to me. Is
anybody here interested in a Murch 2000B? The paint has started peeling
from parts of the cabinet as Murch did not use any primer at all (easy
to remedy). I suppose it would be fine as-is for somebody with coax fed
antennas that are 50 ohms resistive. It can handle the legal limit and
is supposed to cover 160 meters. It even tried to tune my end fed wire
but with a T network it was no joy. I'll try using the Murch for some
fishing bait before I make radical mods to convert it to an L.

Rag, the ALA1530 is not designed to compete with very large antennas like
the Titanex V160HD or with other loops with larger apertures.

Its primary purpose is to provide low noise reception in a high noise urban
environment. The ALA1530 has been providing this sort of service for the
past 15 Years. This done by cancelling out the local E -field and providing
high immunity to conducted power line noise.

Therefore, deploying the loop in a quiet location, the aforementioned
features will not be seen.

However, if one requires, say more gain or more importantly a higher s/n
with a Broadband loop, then a larger loop aperture is required.

To this end Wellbrook provides a Medium aperture loop the ALA100M for simple
wire loops say 4 to 8m in circumference or the new ALA100LN large aperture
loop for 20m circumference antennas.
