Re: Topband: 160 Worked All States

2015-01-11 Thread Herbert Schoenbohm
For me it was just the opposite as the ARRL DX Contest was good for me.
One year, since I was considered DX, I was able to work all 48 States
in 3.5 hours on 160. But since KH6 and KL7 are also DX I wasn't able to
get them. Also since the ARRL 160 Meter DX Contest still bans the U.S.
Territories from being considered DX to try and work WAS during this
event is a waste of time. You have most mainland stations in a wall to
wall sea of QRM with automatic CQ machines and unable to hear you. With
the ARRL DX Contest, as opposed to their 160 Meter Contest, the ops are
only looking for DX and that makes a big difference for me to be able
to 48 State WAS in less than 4 hours.

Hello Jim etal

This has probably been mentioned? But CQ 160 CW Contest coming up in two
weeks is an excellent venue to finish those Topband WAS quests.

Also the ARRL CW DX contest in mid February.

Hi folks - I'm trying to complete my WAS on 160 and need a confirmed QSO
with anyone in the following five states: LA, MS, SC, WV, VT.

I run an Elecraft K3/KPA500 into an Inverted L with a K2AV-designed FCP
under it. Got a limited amount of real estate so I can't lay out much in the
line of radials of receiving antennas, but. I have been able to easily work
into the Canadian Maritime provinces (plus the remainder of the New England
states), so I know I can hit those states. Problem is that I've never heard
anyone from there on Top Band!

So - if you can get on some evening while we have relatively good
propagation, I'd love to arrange a schedule. If we connect I can QSL via
LoTW or direct with my card and an SASE.

Thanks,

He is in California.

The ARRL DX is a waste of time.

The ARRL 160 and the CQWW 160 would be much better.

Topband: Antenna patterns (in close)

2015-01-11 Thread Tom W8JI
Is there a cheap program that calculates and *displays* antenna patterns in
close to the antenna?

I'm working on a better way to explain the limits of using receiving
directivity, and explain why what might be phenomenal this is the best
thing ever to one person might be don't work for crap to someone else.

I can do it in an excel sheet, but that it tedious and it doesn't paint a
good visual picture.

I'm looking for a way to visually show why sometimes a certain thing works
great, and other times the very same thing just stinks in very similar
situations, and why things like noise cancellers might or might not work
with multiple sources when the cases on the surface appear similar or to be
easy solutions.

Thanks,
Tom
