This thread is getting dangerously close to being totally irrelevant to the
mission of this reflector.

There are MANY contest rules that can't be enforced. This is just making
it clear what the intention is - and to allow those who are using remote
receivers a place to compete.

Topband: direct buried beverage coaxial

2016-01-27 Thread Jorge Diez - CX6VM
hello

which 75 ohms coaxial do you recommend for 400-700 runs of direct buried on
ground?

I will need to replace some coaxial that is over the ground and cows and
horses have trodden and have scored in various places so the next step will
bury the coaxial

You want flooded RG-6/U with the polyetheleyne (not PVC) jacket, such as:

From reading the post describing the potentially problematic ice flow,
it could be days (or longer) before that could be attempted. And, I'd
bet that everyone is super bushed by now. Hopefully seas are now calm so
they can recover some energy.

Yes, we all need to dig deep to support these guys. I'm going to do that

Topband: CQ 160 CW Contest

2016-01-27 Thread Tree
Just a reminder that the biggest 160 meter contest is coming up this
weekend. It starts at 2200 UTC on Friday and runs for 48 hours.

Full rules can be found at http://www.cq160.com/. Exchange is RST and your
QTH for US/VE stations. For DX - it is RST + CQ zone.

One fairly new rule is that logs need to be submitted within 5 days of the
end of the contest (unless you ask for a waiver).

Hope conditions are good. The VP8 operation will likely resume either
during or after the contest. I remember working VP8ORK during the 2011 CQ
160 contest - so it is possible to work DX during this contest. ;-)

2016-01-27 Thread Tom Haavisto
This came up last year, and I pointed out it is a game changer. A station
can now operate full duplex by having a remote receiving site.

A few folks indicated they came close to being able to do this within the
confines of their own property, but it looks like they decided to proceed.

It is only available to SOA(HP), but it will be interesting to see what the
final outcome is.

2016-01-27 Thread Tim Shoppa
I feel those competing for the top scores, would need multiple remote
receivers (not allowed by the rules) and would suffer from latency.

What this does do, is allow some limited operation with a single remote
receiver.

Re: Topband: CQ 160 CW Contest

2016-01-27 Thread Andy Blank
Jorge, this new rule is for SINGLE OPERATOR ASSISTED ONLY.

Multi ops, single ops are not allowed to use remote rx.

For those of you that did not follow the thread, this was in response to
some stations that requested a compromise.
We decided to allow it only for assisted operation.
This rule mirrors exactly the accomodation made for the Stew Perry contest.

To clarify, web SDRs are OK if they are in the 100km radius. One and only
one receiver can be used.
Anyone caught using receivers outside of these limits will be subject to
disqualification.

Reminder: Single Op Assisted is HIGH POWER only.
Low power stations get listed together for this category only.

Have fun in the contest, let's hope for some good conditions!
BTW, the rule for 5 day submission of logs is not all that new.
Please email your cabrillo logs ASAP after the contest.

Re: Topband: CQ 160 CW Contest

2016-01-27 Thread Andy Blank
Hi Mike.

To clarify;

The rule for allowing remote receivers is for Single Op ASSISTED only.
It does not matter what power level you use.
Multi Ops CANNOT use remote receivers. Single operator Unassisted CANNOT
use remote receivers. Power levels do not matter.

There is no separate listing for LP or QRP in ASSISTED.
All power levels are listed together in the ASSISTED category.
If you use the DX Cluster, skimmers or any spotting assistance you are
ASSISTED (except Multi-ops). If you use a remote receiver you are ASSISTED.

Can someone tell me how this rule is going to be policed? Operator ethics
(becoming an oxymoron) doesn't count.

Topband: On their way!

2016-01-27 Thread Jim Monahan
For those who haven't seen this:

January 27 – Antonio EA5RM – VP8STI/VP8SGI Chief Pilot – informs that finally,
yesterday the team was able to collect all gear from Thule Is. All team members
are OK and they are on the way to South Georgia where they will arrive after
three days sailing. They will try to be on the air for eight days as VP8SGI.
Personally, Antonio wants to thank to all who send support messages expressing
their concerns about VP8STI team situation.

Delorme tracker is working, you can see Braveheart progress at:

From reading the post describing the potentially problematic ice flow,
it could be days (or longer) before that could be attempted. And, I'd
bet that everyone is super bushed by now. Hopefully seas are now calm so
they can recover some energy.

Yes, we all need to dig deep to support these guys. I'm going to do that
when I do the OQRS thing. I didn't make it on Topband, but I'm in the
log for six bands, including QRP on 20CW.
