Made it! 19 January 2017, is the 80th anniversary of my first ham license,
Class C operating privileges with W5GGV as my call. Was 14 years old at
the

time. A little over a year later I upgraded to Class A. Many years later
the Extra Class (with no added privileges) came along. Upgraded. Some
years

later the FCC announced that hams with an Extra Class license who had been
licensed 25 years could apply for a two -letter call, no place on the
application to request of a specific call. Was assigned W5DM.

First rig made from junked Atwater Kent radio parts. First antenna was a
wire going out a hole in the window screen to a tree. First DX was VK2SS
on

40 m CW, September 1937. (An aside. There were no phone privileges on 40 m
for USA hams). The VK2SS QSL card is hung on my wall. My card to him was
written on a postcard (Great Depression=no money to buy QSL cards).

Been fairly active over the years, except, of course, for WW II. If
interested in WW II, you can do a web search on DD 792 for a small part of
my history.

The first 20 or 30 years I built my transmitters (all low powered) and
receivers. Operated CW only until SSB came along. Then I built a low
powered
phasing rig. A BC-348H receiver was made dual conversion using 85 kcs
(kcs
then= kHz now) IF transformers from a BC 453 receiver. Had a blast
working

the world with a homebuilt "cubical quad" on 20 meters. Since then mostly
CW.

I may have made one small contribution to ham radio. In the April 1958
issue of QST, in Technical Correspondence there was a letter from me that,
I

think, was the first mention in a ham publication that the formula for
determining the length of a "cubical quad" antenna was not correct. Since
my measurements were made using a BC 348, a grid dip oscillator, and a 100
kcs crystal oscillator. I don't know whether I was just lucky to get as
close as I did or did a fairly good job with what I had.

In the early 1990s started out to get 160 m WAS from a 120 x 120 foot
electrically noisy city lot (SE NM) with a long ( ~3/8 wavelength) but
low
semi-inverted L antenna. Ground radials of varying length in one 90
degree
segment. Made 160 m WAS. Then started chasing DX. Now have 189
countries

confirmed on 160 m, 324 on all bands.

Age, not surprisingly, has taken its toll. CW now down to 20-25 wpm-at
one
time it was 35-40 wpm. Finger dexterity way down-has taken me over 3
hours
to type this email. Physical realities remain physical realities--I am now
a

disabled, crippled old man. But---

No complaints-many people are worse off than I am.

Thanks to all who have had the knowledge and the kindness to help me over
the years.

Topband: 160 and 80m antenna...

2016-11-09 Thread Douglas Ruz / CO8DM
Hi Topbanders !!!;

Finally I got an FCP isolation transformer for 160m...I am planning install a
160m Inv L + FCP...I am wondering if I can add 80m to this system.

I know the 160m FCP isolation transformer only work on 160m but maybe adding a
relay is possible to work on 80m.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Topband: Horizontal Waller Flag (Single or double)...

2016-09-12 Thread Douglas Ruz / CO8DM

Hi,

I have a 5 elem 6m yagi...the boom is 15 ft long...

I have been reading about the Waller Flag...both version, Vertical and
Horizontal.

I would like add the WF to my 6m yagi or a single WF (one loop)...I know few
hams around the world did it and there is no interaction. (PY1RO, PY2XB,
etc)

My tower is 50 ft high...I know it is too low for 160m but I can not
install the Vertical version...my city lot is small and I have an Spiderbeam
on top (abt 6 ft above the 6m yagi)

any idea ?

Thanks,

Topband: Ground screen ????

2016-03-01 Thread Douglas Ruz (CO8DM)
Hi,

Need some ideas from your side...

I am trying to find a good solution for my 160/80m antenna.

I am thinking about some kind of Inv L with an 80m trap as a radiator for both
bands.

But, what about the counterpoise...Unfortunately in my small city lot I can´t
install radials and I can´t get parts for the FCP yet...what about a Ground
screen ???...I have a galvanized roof...it is about 50 ft long and 16 ft
wide...galvanized sheets are 3 by 8 ft long and all are bolted together. The
roof is about 15 ft high.

Can I use this roof as a ground screen for the 160/80m antenna ???

Thoughts ?,

73Douglas, CO8DM
P.S:1- I finish my 50 ft tower installation.
2- Thanks for all QSO´s on 160m before ARRL CW contest with me and with
our contest station T48K.

Topband: How can I tune an FCP without isolation transformer ???

Hi Topbanders,

I am building an Inv L for 160m with FCP.

As i can get an isolation transformer i will add a series loading coil (about
17uH) to my FCP and then an RF choke.

How can i tune my FCP + Loading coil ??...i need a balance between FCP+Loading
coil and the Radiator.

Can i build 2 FCP with loading coils and tune like a dipole with my
MFJ-259???...then remove one of the FCP´s or keep both.

Thoughts ??

Someone on the list with experience can answer few questions off the list.

Next year I'll be building a new home and station in Hawaii.

40 through 6 meters is already set in stone, but 80 and 160 are still
cloudy.

Here's the setup:

I'm allowed one tower maximum 90 ft. The tower will be 90 ft of Rohn 55
using a K0XG rotating system with two rings. It will be guyed using
fiberglass guys. There will be a bunch of HF VHF stuff on the tower.
Three
tribanders, two 12/17 meter Yagis, a 40 meter Yagi and way down on the
bottom

two 6 meter antennas.

The tower sits on VERY uneven ground. Although the lot measures 12
acres, I am using only the top three and renting out the rest of the land
to a

farmer to keep taxes from being crazy high.

The ground is pure alluvial red fine particle soil (no stones) and has a
depth of about 6 feet before hitting rock. Since the east side of Hawaii
gets at least 100 inches of rain a year it is usually pretty moist. I
would

assume the soil is at least average or better in conductivity. I can run
ropes, wires etc off the tower at the 80 and 40 foot guy points, but can
not
connect directly to the tower since the tower rotates. The is no room
for

a rotating dipole on the tower for 80.

I've used quad triangle loops before with the pointed end on the bottom
suspended by wires and am leaning towards that since the ground is so
uneven

and the terrain difference would be a real negative for a 4 square (I
think).

On 160 I'm leaning toward a wire vertical suspended from a rope coming
from the tower which would make the antenna about 65 or 70 feet tall and
to

compensate for that I would make it a T-top.

For rx I have lots of room to run a 700 -900 Beverage to JA and another
to

EU/USA direction, so that isn't a problem.

I do need suggestions for my 80 and 160 tx situation. Any ideas?

I am in the process of clearing land for full size 80m 4SQ. I have two
questions for the group:

1) How much and what kind of degradation should I see if I place the 4SQ
elements around my tower. The tower is 90' and has a 4 el 40 m yagi at 90'
and 6 el tribander at 105'. Currently I have no plans to detune the tower,
but do have plans to use it as a 160m TX antenna.

2) If the consensus is to move the 4SQ away from the tower, how far should
I move it? Also, in what direction should I move it with respect to the W
and S elements of the 4SQ.

Any suggestions as to who is active from MS on 160m with a good station? I

2015-08-30 Thread Douglas Ruz (CO8DM)

Tom and all members of the list thanks for your ideas and time .

I have a plan B:

I added a BNC female connector in the rear panel of my old Yaesu, FT747 (It
is an FT80C, the commercial version with metallic chassis) few months ago.

I was using that BNC to feed an SDR receiver using the same antenna.

If i add a SPDT switch also on the rear panel and RE-WIRE the BNC connection
i can get an RX port in my old radio and can connect an RX antenna...like
modern radios...Switch Pos A (main antenna at SO239)...Pos B (SO239 for TX
and BNC for RX)...i made few mods to my radio, so, i know it very well...

Maybe that will help...of course, i must add then an Front End Saver...still
need a fast relay !!!

Maybe the Plan A with a 5mS relay will be more easy...still need a fast
relay too !!!

It seems to me that a very fast operating preamp protection circuit could
be
constructed employing a good fast saturating NPN switching transistor
across

the antenna path. In receive mode the collector-base junction would have
substantial reverse bias and the transistor can be chosen for low
collector-base capacitance. With a fast switch like a 2N708 or something
similar the switching time will, of course, FAR outperform a relay
closure

time.

This thread might have splintered. I was responding to this:

Your FT-747 only has one antenna input. It does not have a second
receiver. It doesn't even have a receive-only antenna input. You cannot
transmit and receive at same time. Why do you need a front end saver?

If it is a transceiver without an RX antenna point, the problem is adding
a receive antenna to a transceiver that does not have a receive port.

If it is a transceiver with an RX port, the requirement for an external
front end saver and what will work depends on the antennas, the power,
the transceiver, and the antenna spacing.

A front end saver can be very simple with some radios, more complicated,
or not needed at all.

An external switch is never easy to do correctly, unless the radio has
good TX RX switching time sequencing.

I'm unclear what the application is, but a 10 mS relay is really too slow
for either application. The sequencing issues I pointed out apply to both
systems.

Originally, the FCP is connected in the center (33ft each side for
160m)...Did somebody try connect it at one END ???.

Probably i will install my vertical in a corner of my property and some
neighbours houses do not allow connect the FCP in the middle.

any idea?

Thanks,

Topband: KD9SV-OK1RR relays ???

2015-08-29 Thread Douglas Ruz (CO8DM)

Hi Martin, OK1RR,

I tried email direct to you but it was not possible. I am sorry about the
other member of the list.

It is about the FRONT END SAVER relays:

I have two different relays here and i would like to know if i can use one
of them in

your design:

I have HFD2 Subminiature DIP relay:
-Matching standard 16 pin socket.
-DPDT
-100 million operations
- Operate time 4ms and release time 3ms.
-Capacitance: Contact to coil 5pF and contact set to contact 1,5 pF

I have also HFD41 relay:
-SPDT relay
-10 million operations
-Operation time 10mS
-Not sure about capacitance.

Maybe i have to RE-DESIGN the PCB but that is very easy.

Any idea???...Thanks,

Doug -
Your FT-747 only has one antenna input. It does not have a second
receiver. It doesn't even have a receive-only antenna input. You cannot
transmit and receive at same time. Why do you need a front end saver?

If you are adding an outboard relay keyed from the amp control line of
the FT-747 to allow you to have separate transmit and receive antennas,
that's great. Any old relay with less than 10ms make/break time will work
fine there. You still don't need a front end saver, because your rig
still cannot be hooked to both transmit and receive antenna at same time.

I totally agree with you Steve...i will try the flag first without preamp
and see how it play.

Actually, i will have a short coax run...about 30 or 40 ft...

Getting back to CO8DM's original question about a preamp to use with a flag.
If the receiver noise level pops up and then drops when a receive antenna is
connected and then disconnected, then it’s likely that a preamp may not be
needed at all.

When I first played with a coaxial loop, a preamp was necessary. Since going
to a full size flag, I find that I seldom even bother turning on a external
preamp. I do have a relatively short coax run of about 75 ft from the flag
to the receiver.

I’d try the flag first without building/buying a preamp and see how it
plays.

Thanks Tony,

I am using an old Yaesu, FT747...it is only one antenna connector on that
radio, so, i have to do a circuit for switching RX and TX antennas and also
a preamplifier for the flag antenna...right???

Hi Douglas,
I use Flag and Pennant antennas. The most room OI have for a beverage is
300'. The Flag and Pennants were always better. Tried Ewe's, but they are
ground dependent.
1000 ohm should be close enough.

If the receive antenna is close to the transmit antenna you may need to have
a signal limiter on the receive input. Or maybe a fast acting relay to
ground the receive antenna when transmitting.

Hi,

I will install a vertical antenna for TX on 160, 80 and 40m.

I want build a Receiving antenna for those Low Bands.

I live in a city lot, so, i can not install beverages...i have been reading
in the Low Band Dxing about Receiving Loops and i like the Rectangular loop
developed by EA3VY and K6SE.

Anyway, i would like hear your ideas.

The Termination Resistor is 950 ohms in the design but i have 1000 carbon
resistor...any idea??

Thanks,

I have 2 more questions:

About the resistor: what kind of material???...carbon, right? and what power
will disipate the resistor ?

The 2nd questions is about the transformer: i have some binocular and toroids
but small ones, BN-43-202 and FT50-43...maybe adding few FT50-43 can BUILD
some kind of larger binocular...any idea?

Any sort of loop you can put in, will be a superior receiving antenna to
using your transmitting antenna.

Most of the simple loops have a terminating resistor that is 400 to 1200 ohms
depending on details.

I use a K9AY loop. Different loops have different mounting and termination
needs.

Difference between 1000 ohms and 950 ohms for terminating resistor, is pretty
inconsequential.

Nuradi, how about halfwave sloping dipoles hung digonally from the top of
the building? Some 30 years ago at YU1EXY we had contest shack at top of
60m tall building with student's dormitory. In spite the building was in
the middle of city noise, sloping dipoles played extremely well. Later we
replaced sloping dipoles with sloped yagis for 80m (3 el toward NW (USA)
and 2 el toward NE (Japan). With halfwave sloping dipole we managed to
QSO KH6 on 160m, very though contact from this part of Europe. Maybe
building acted as kind of reflector on this band...

Dear all,

In preparation of this coming WW big contest, I plan to install wire
antenna
on a roof top of a 33rd storey building (about 110metres above the
ground)
for operating on the 160M, 80M and 40M band.

The building roof top rectangular size about 45 metres long (from
NWtoN-326.8 degress to SEtoS-146.8degrees) and 33 metres wide
(fromNEtoE-56.8 degrees to SWtoW-236.8 degrees) located in centre of
Jakarta
city.

The roof top have plenty of cellulair microwave operator antennas
(operating
in 5GHz and above ALSO one TV operator with around 400MHz working freq.)
and
there are also two SelfSupportingTower-15metres high, on each end of the
long side of the building.

There is also one-SST belong to theTV operator which is about 50 metres
high, located on the SE end of the roof top.

Good grounding terminal is available as it's used for grounding all the
communication antennas/equipments.

I have my own room in the centre of the roof top where we put all our
indoor
microwave devices and routers/switch.

Prefereable wire antenna is lazy 'laying'H or quad, dipole, slope..

I appreciate verymuch any suggestion, input from all, regarding the best
wire antenna for this site to be used in the 160M, 80M and 40M band.

Thankyou very much indeed in advance.
