Re: Topband: BOG - Selecting the Optimum Length
Mark, The BOG here is 190 feet. It works very well and is quite directional. As a result of my experience so far, I'm thinking of a second one for the other directions. 73 Kip W6SZN -Original Message- From: Topband [mailto:topband-boun...@contesting.com] On Behalf Of Mark K3MSB Sent: Monday, October 17, 2016 8:35 AM To: Lloyd - N9LB Cc: topBand List Subject: Re: Topband: BOG - Selecting the Optimum Length Based upon N9LB’s comments, I just emailed Bruce and told him to hold my order for a KB-1. I have just enough room for 200 ft for a BOG. Extending it to 250, 290 feet etc is NOT an option for me. From my reading, I understood that 200 feet was not exact, but I didn’t expect it to be 250 to 290 feet. If I had known that I would not have even considered a BOG. With the cable, KB-1 etc (my BOG will be unidirectional to EU only, not bidirectional), I really don’t want to invest close to $200 on an antenna that will not do any better on RX than my Inverted-L.Saving it for a Hi-Z 3 may be the better option. So, with only 200 feet to play with, is it worth it? I've no doubt BOGs work, I may not have the room for them. 73 Mark K3MSB On Oct 17, 2016 9:35 AM, "Lloyd - N9LB"wrote: > I have been asked how I arrived at the 290 foot BOG length. > > My original 200 foot BOG had a good F/B on 80m but showed almost no > directivity on 160m, so this indicated to me that the BOG needed to be > longer to improve the 160m performance with my particular soil > conditions and environment. > > A search on the Internet produced recommendations for 160m BOG lengths > of > 247 to 290 feet. Re: Topband: ET7L NOT VALID
All, There was some confusion at ARRL about ET7L. It was among the cards I submitted at the recent PNWDXC in Portland. My application was acted upon quickly and according to the online LOTW account it was not credited. However, when I received the hard copy credit slip and credit listing it was credited. I brought this to the attention of the DXCC Desk and was advised of the following in an email just received: The ET7L contact is not acceptable for DXCC credit. Any credit which was erroneously given has since been removed from every DXCC customers’ record. We discovered there was a problem with the Online DXCC program issuing credit for the call. Once I had figured this out, we made the necessary changes in the system. 73 Kip W6SZN -Original Message- From: Topband [mailto:topband-boun...@contesting.com] On Behalf Of Bob Lawson N6RW Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2016 7:47 AM To: topband@contesting.com Subject: Re: Topband: ET7L NOT VALID I submitted my cards with some others and my returned DXCC Award Credit Slip showed the ET7L cards _were _accepted. A much better description and illustration of pre-amplifier selection menu 8-4 and the IPO front panel push button appears on page 30 of the operating manual. Two controls must be properly set to optimize FT-1000MP receiver front-end performance on 160, 80 and 40 meters: Attenuator and IPO. When IPO is enabled, it bypasses the pre-amplifier selected by Menu 8-4. The FT-1000MP has three pre-amplifiers: - a 1.8 - 7 MHz pre-amplifier (IPO should be enabled when operating on 160, 80 and 40 meters to bypass this pre-amplifier) - a pre-amplifier with excellent sensitivity on 24 and 28 MHz - a wideband (FLAT) pre-amplifier with very poor 28 MHz sensitivity The front panel IPO pushbutton bypasses the pre-amplifiers entirely, feeding the antenna directly into the first mixer. I always enable IPO when operating on 160, 80 and 40 meters. The Attenuator should be set to the highest setting while providing acceptable receiver sensitivity. I almost always set the attenuator to 18 dB when operating on 160 meters. I always set Menu 8-4 to TUNED, allowing the FT-1000MP to automatically select the proper pre-amplifier for 12 and 10 meters, I never use the 1,8-7 MHz preamplifier because I always enable IPO when operating on those bands and I never set Menu 8-4 to FLAT. 73 Frank W3LPL _ From: "Kip Edwards" <kedwa...@ltol.com> To: "Top Band Contesting" <topband@contesting.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2016 2:07:09 PM Subject: Topband: FT-1000MP All, I have been corresponding via email with Andy, SP6AEG, regarding the 5J0P DXpedition and other topics. Jim, I think your diatribe in an apparent attempt to embarrass SP6AEG is out of place in a public forum. You have no idea of the his personal circumstances, unless you chose to not disclose that you do. The support of DXpeditions such as VK0EK will continue to be a problem for all of us but messages such as yours will not do a thing to help solve that problem.
