Does anyone know if I can look up the topband@contesting.com e-mails or get
them in bulk when I request them? I belong to many groups and unless I look
at their e-mails a few times a day they rapidly fill my screens. I'll be

Topband: small rx loops and ferrite

2012-07-03 Thread Sam Morgan
Since the topic of ferrite seems to be at the top of the lists focus
I'd like to ask about what ferrite mix to use at the feed of a small rx loop I
have built

this is NOT a shielded loop
with the break in the shield half way around the loop

I made the loop out of the 2 turns of 5/8 inch hardline I had available
the circumference is about 12'
I am using only the shield as a continuous 2 turn loop

for the feedline I just attached a 50 ohm coax with the
coax center to one end of the hardline shield
and the coax shield to the other end of the hardline shield

it worked fine for what I wanted
in the sense that it allowed me to null
some thunderstorm crash noise during the Summer Stew
allowing me to diversity receive with my outside vertical on my K3
(it even works on 80m and 40m, so the toroid needs to work 160m-40m)

however the pattern is not symmetrical
(I think this is due to the unbalanced 15' of direct coax feedline?)

so I think my next step would be to use a toroid as a balun
with each end of the hardline loop attached by a couple of turns on the toroid
and maybe twice that many turns on the other side of the toroid
going to my 15 feet of 50 ohm coax to the rig

I might later get around to building a preamp for it
but for now all I want to do is add the toroid
in the hopes that it will maybe make the pattern more symmetrical

if I understand this correctly
I am wanting to use a broadband coupling FTxx-xx ferrite core
rather than a narrow high Q like I would get with powdered iron Txx-xx core

I have an FT240-31, as well as FT37-61, and a FT50-61 on hand in my part bin.
they were left overs from an order from Tony at
http://partsandkits.com/toroids.php

I used all the hard line I had on hand
so different lengths, configurations etc etc etc
is not my question, for now...

I just want to know what mix toroid I need to use
between this loop and the coax feed to it

I was planing on 4 turns on the primary and 16 turns on the secondary
my reasoning being that might also give me a little signal increase as well?

perhaps later I might get into the matching aspects of this experiment
but I had plenty of signal strength using the coax directly
with the loop setting in my 'other room' of my ground floor apartment
I just thought it would be nice to have a symmetrical pattern
rather than the odd ball one I have now

It is not good fellowship, or good manners, to accuse someone as helpful as
ON4UN of intentionally lying or misleading people.

John, ON4UN, is genuinely helpful to people, and does the best job he can
collecting, understanding, and sorting data. What he publishes might not be
perfect, but at least he makes an effort to put hundreds and hundreds of
hours into a book to encourage people, rather than sitting around insulting
 other people.

Topband: new 160m propagation prediction software

2012-03-30 Thread Sam Morgan
the following is an excerpt from the ARLP013 Propagation de K7RA
 From Tad Cook, K7RA
Seattle, WA March 30, 2012

quote

Q-up Now has a fascinating new set of real-time propagation tools
at http://www.q-upnow.com/, developed by a team associated with the
Utah State University Space Weather Center
(http://spaceweather.usu.edu/) in Logan, Utah.

They use a real-time model of the ionosphere called GAIM (Global
Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements) which is updated every 15
minutes with 10,000 global TEC (Total Electron Content) measurements
to simulate the F layers. Then they use the ABBYNormal Model (see
http://gcmd.nasa.gov/records/abbyNormal.html) to model the D and E
layers, and the two models are combined to give a complete
representation of the global ionosphere.

On the first page you will see NVIS maps for Near Vertical Incidence
Skywave propagation. These are not quite ready yet, and currently
the maps shown are several days old.

Most interesting is the HF Availability
(http://www.q-upnow.com/hf-availability) area in which you can model
real-time propagation for the frequency of your choice between any
two points and beyond out to the antipodes. You can use
latitude/longitude coordinates, but I found it easiest to just copy
grid square data from callsign servers such as http://www.qrz.com.

This tool also works on 160 meters, which the propagation prediction
programs that many of us use do not. Of course the major difference
with this tool is that it tells you what the propagation should be
over any path right now, but they are planning on offering a
predictive tool.

The link in my previous e-mail was broken - this one works - Sorry Gang.

See you in SP this weekend.

Re: Topband: An observation about Topband contesting technique

2011-12-04 Thread Sam Morgan
since I have a very weak signal (24w ERP from a 7' tall vertical)
when I get ask for a repeat of my call
I send it again at the original speed

but 90% of the time I end up having to repeat more than once
and them may even have to reduce my speed to ~13wpm
then I finally have my call copied

perhaps what you are running into is
someone who is tired of the 3-4 intermediate attempts at normal speeds
and just cuts to the chase and reduces speed to get it done more quickly?

Re: Topband: cq 160

2011-12-03 Thread Sam Morgan
I run into that problem they just keep calling without space between cq's.
often myself.

My guesses are, they are either not even listening, just trying to keep their
claim to that frequency by the never ending cq's. I say it that way, because
they don't seem to even leave enough space between their never ending,
automated
cq's, to even hear a station if they was one attempting to answer.

Or maybe they have some really good directional antennas and are listening
towards some part of the globe I'm not on, hi hi.

Then again it could be their receive capabilities are being limited by QRN/QRM
that I can't hear.

But it is pretty upsetting when you have waited until the big gun stations are
in bed, so you will not have to compete with them in the pileups, and can hear
the station calling cq so well, and yet it seems your answers to their endless
calls are being ignored. You are not alone Jimmy.

Re: Topband: 160m antenna test

2011-10-22 Thread Sam Morgan
I have had some questions about what frequency(s) I plan to operate

I usually do SP,
since I doubt my abilities to hold a frequency with 300mw
I considered trying to set a range,
maybe the some where around the QRP frequencies 1810 1812
but if I remember correctly the band tends to fill up from the bottom up
and many of the big guns tend to hang out there
staking claim on those frequencies...?

I also considered doing SP most of the time
and selecting a frequency(s) like 1810 to 1812
and trying to find a run frequency there at certain times
like perhaps @ 15 and 45 past the hour?

I'm open for suggestions
how I might get the most out of the band
in the times from SS -1hr to SR +2-3 hrs ?

TIA

For those wishing to give their RX antennas a real world test

I will be operating QRP in the Pre Stew Perry this weekend,
from DM91, central West Texas, San Angelo to be specific.

Now for the added treat, my 5w qrp signal, will be transmitted from
 a 7' tall Hi-Q 6/160 antenna, mounted @ 20' with 16 radials, ea 13' long.

At the claimed 6% efficiency, that means my ERP should be about 300mw.

Operating times will be from SS -1hr to SR +2-3 hrs
or about 2300 UTC Sat - 1600 UTC Sun

a couple of hrs sleep may be optional
depends if the contacts go dead after 3-4am local CDT 8-9 UTC

Good luck, hope to be in your logs by contests end on Sunday

 P.S.
how active the results of this Pre Stew Perry are, will help decide
 if I will operate QRP 5w x %6=300mw or 100w x 6%=6w in the Stew Perry

it's great to give out the QRP/s times 4 contact points,
but if the number of QSO's is so low, as to be boring...
 (pun intended, hi hi)

I may have to opt for running as a big gun QRO 100w x 6%=6w tx signal
in the November Stew Perry and only be worth 2 contact points.

your log entry will help decide, TIA

 geo storm in progress.

I will be putting up my very first beverage this weekend. Hoping that it is
less susceptible to this type of QRN.
