Re: Topband: 160
As ham radio changes there will remain at least a niche for CW, SSB, and RTTY and it's competitions. FT8 will supplement the bands , not supplant it, IMO. Do you think FT8, FT4 and whatever digital modes come along are the future or will something else take its place? Who knows... time and technology moves on. Maybe it might attract some of the Millennials to fill in the void by us Baby Boomers who will all too soon be making. Let's set a good example for them to follow. How many people used remote stations, exceeded their power limits, etc. Singling out a mode because you are upset that it has taken away activity in your preferred mode is not helpful to the hobby. Not everyone that use FT8 cheats. Not everyone that uses a amp that exceeds their legal limit uses it in that fashion. How can you guarantee that everyone on the "Honor Role" was 100 percent honorable or even anyone that got DXCC did it right? You can't so please stop singling out a mode you don't care for. We get it. Move on. It is here. Just like the Reverse beacon, packet cluster, etc. We are all hams enjoying many aspects of the hobby. Can't we get along? Re: Topband: TO7CC
Jim, Your points about understanding grey line propagation is right. I know that they have been on almost everyday working just that. If you have a great circle map located on your QTH you will see a very great difference in paths between FT5ZM and TO7CC. FT5ZM was almost a East West path and TO7CC is North South Path right through the intensity of the auroral oval a much more difficult path by far. So I don't think I can expect to hear TO7CC as easily as I did FT5ZM. They need to understand grey line propagation to work NA on 160 and 80, and to realize that there's an opening to Zone 3/4 around their sunset and our sunrise. FT5ZM did that to great advantage, working Zone 4/5 around 4/5 sunset and Zone 3/4 at sunrise. According to ClubLog, they made 3,571 Qs on Topband, of which 784 were to North America! 73, Jim K9YC _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Re: Topband: One of those times
Fantastic catch Merv I am sure that made your day! Rich K7ZV Conditions have been very poor to say the least from KH6 land especially to EU. What few contacts I have made have been from a very skewed western direction. Today was no different, path over the pole at sunrise was not open, I was sitting on 1823 working on email, sunrise is 1708Z and suddenly I could hear a signal starting to come out of the noise. ???BM 8???BM then clear as a bell 8Q7BM calling cq. One call and I had a new one in the log at 1710Z, he then faded back down into the noise, I could hear traces of him for another 20 mins after sunrise, not enough to copy but knew he was there. Just one of those top band times when being at the right place at the right time when the band sounds dead. Makes up for all the ones I have missed this season. 73 Merv K9FD/KH6 _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Re: Topband: Lightning Strike Chart
Thanks for the lightning chart Jim. I have beensusing this one. http://thunderstorm.vaisala.com/explorer.html Rich/K7ZV Saw this lightning strike chart today and wondered if other Top Bandeleros were aware of it. http://www.strikestarus.com/ Enjoyed the comments recently on the FCP !! Mine is still in the works. A few weeks ago I put a rope across the trees where the FCP will go and it's still there with nothing heard from the condo assoc. which is a very good sign. 73 jim / W1FMR ___ UR RST IS ... ... ..9 QSB QSB - hw?
