Yes. But certainly *some* operators will respect it. If Roger just calls CQ
with no suffix, he's making it harder on himself.

Many poor operators in Europe do not respect an area CQ, especially on CW.
On SSB Many poor operators in Europe wont even respect a DX station when he
calls for a specific prefix or suffix, why would they respect an area CQ ?

What's wrong with calling CQ [AREA]?
e.g.
CQ DX
CQ NA
CQ SA
CQ ...

And if you get called by a EU, just ignore it.

Indeed ,conditions were not good. But KL7RA suddenly appeared at my sunrise
and I logged KG7CW from ID for a new state 15 minutes later. (only SD
needed) TB is always a challenge :) 73 Pat ON7PQ .

Dear OMs and YLs,
Just because you make many Qs within NA on your own continent does not
make conditions good. For the vast majority of people reporting to 3830
Friday night's conditions following a solar storm were "Stinko" with poor
propagation between EU and NA. Saturday night was considerably improved
but not wonderful. You can hear plenty of good AM stations in the daytime
but not much DX - the absorption is too high. My understanding is though
that at least electrical storm noise was minimum in NA for the weekend.
