Hi Tree,

Winter operation of my remote is very iffy for battery status and is 
often not accessible due to weather. I had a opportunity to operate from 
Texas at a K7CA air B It was a real experience for this old guy.


I arrived Tuesday evening in heavy fog and rain in Freeport, TX. Fiber 
glass masts were drop shipped there from DX Engineering. The tool kit 
included Ameritron AL1306 and SUN SDR2DX with a bunch of wire. Wednesday 
the 50ft top loaded vertical with two elevated radials went up but 
remained un-tuned in heavy rain. By evening Thursday I had a K9AY up and 
working without a pre-amp.


Things were not looking good. Trashed by stationary thunderstorms and 
very heavy rain there was no operation until Friday the start of the 
contest. It stormed and rained 3.5 inches overnight. We originally 
planned a multi operation but that was scrapped before 2200 hours UTC 
with 20 0ver S-9 thunderstorm QRM that lasted well into Saturday 
evening. Tree it was horrible! I had stationary storms North and over 
head with another large storm just south in the gulf. I think I worked 
only 79 stations first night S cherry picking those above the noise. 
It was very bad luck. The storms hung in the Galveston area for three 
days before moving east late Saturday.


The K9AY was not great but a face saver in that I could hear and work 
some Pacific DX Saturday. Due to limited space it was too close to the 
transmit antenna that I could not detune during TX, but it got me some 
urban operation ears. The TX antenna worked very well, too well for the 
RX capabilities. It was a 50ft top loaded vertical with two quarter wave 
elevated radials. I'm sold on that concept!


In the series of events I was not able to get a good feel for 
propagation. The K9AY worked but signals were obviously way down. 
Propagation favored East and West with good coverage to South America. 
Signals to the north were very attenuated. The signal to noise ratio was 
however improved enough to call CQ Saturday night. I had hoped to work 
EU Friday and lots of JA Saturday morning but had to work left overs 
Saturday when conditions improved. All in all very difficult for this 
OLD guy who has less than 50% hearing.


Would I do it again? Hell yes! Plans are to return next year to a beach 
front house on the gulf itself

Put in 4 hours this year. QRN and lack of DX plus a sore back made
cndx less than exciting here in Ohio.

Came on a few times Fri night but QRN was moderately heavy ( S5-7)
masking the DX I was hoping for, so went to bed early.

Sat night I saw multiple spots for EU early, but the few I could hear
didnt hear me ( around my SS.)
Later at night near 0300-0500z had some success into southern EU (
couple of 9A's, CT3, GU, 5B, IG9, and then V3, KP2, KP4, PJ2, P4)

US was pretty good, working 38 states and 4 provinces. Saw spots for
KL7, KH6, multiple JA's - but heard nothing thru the noise. Even at my
SR Sunday morning the QRN was - if anything - heavier than during the
evening hours.

Sounded like cndx were about average or slightly below, but the QRN
masked many sigs.

Those guys in Cyprus have been showing up well here during recent
contests, at times one of the few Euros coming through.

My Station: 1/4 wave INV-L w/ 26 radials and 52 ft vertical leg. SAL30
rx antenna.
IC7610/ACOM 1000 amp. N1MM+ logging software. Oh, and 82 y.o. ears.

Well it's a shame conditions were so very poor over the weekend . . . I
never enter any of these contests, but do pop on 160 a few times over the
weekend to see what DX I can work.

But I only heard (and worked) 4 North American stations . . . even most of
the European signals were well down on normal.

Not sure about the other KS stations.  But here in NW KS, if I don't 
spin the HiZ RX circle 8 around to point to SW, I just won't hear AZ 
unless the station calling is really strong or the prop is peaking or 
something - enough signal so it's detectable over the other callers, 
strong to the point that I will spin in that SW direction to catch em.


In the CQ 160, on a few hours of part time run with about 600 Qs total, 
I worked a bunch of WA (NW) and AZ (SW) stations - but the majority of 
callers are for the Midwest are in the NE/SE direction.  Suspect most 
guys in the Midwest with directional RX have the same issue - you got to 
point one direction and for unassisted guys running rate, that means 
look east.  Guys in assisted or working S to find state mults will 
seek out the lower population states off to the west because they are 
equally valuable.


I do point SW/NW from time to time but after working the few callers out 
that direction, point back eastward as that the bulk. I'm not much of a 
CW contester so I suppose that guys wiht better op skills, better 
wetwork between their ears, and better self-discipline may have a 
different read.

Thank you as well.  I am not a contester and I'm also not the greatest CW op.  
So I get on only sporadically and search and pounce, mostly looking for DX. I 
made all of 145 Qs.  I used N3FJP's logging program and the map function that 
colors in the worked states showed a big blank white spot through the middle of 
the country and into the frozen north.   I didn't mean to rile up the ops in 
those states who were on, we just never crossed paths.

Thanks to all for the Qs this weekend. 
This was a good contest weekend for me. I did far better than ever before.
My personal best for one night in a 160 contest was 34 EU stations worked;
57 for the weekend. This weekend I worked 42 EU Friday night and 50 on
Saturday night for a weekend total of 92 EU, in 32 DXCC countries. In those
92 EU QSOs was one new one - GU, making 241 countries on 160. Plus, last
evening I snagged 9K. Not a new one, but certainly a rare one! 
Notably missing were the usual suspects from JA and down under. I saw
numerous spots but had no copy.
I ran Single Op, High Power, Assisted, about 80% S Here are my totals for
just under 23 hours of operating:

Band  QSOs StP DXC

1.8  831 58   45

Score:   269,654

I got all the states + DC, but missed 5 Provinces:

Equipment:
Elecraft K3s in full diversity;
Kenwood TL-922 running 750 - 900 Watts;
TX ant - Inv-L, 62 feet vertical;
RX ant - 2-El Hi-Z system.

Here in the south ( Florida) much the same propagation.. A few really 
strong stations from EU ( one UA2F that was so strong as to be 
suspicious) . The best EU signals were nearer their sunrise. Earlier in 
the evening not so much, a handful of week  EU stations with deep QSB 
were the norm earlier in both evenings. Like you NO Asia, SA or VK/ZJ.


Worked 46 states missed KL7, KH6, SD and ND ...no VE5 up in Canada...Odd 
hole in the N. America prop� no ND, SD or VE5 all right together 
geographically...h???

6 months or so. Had a lot of physical 
issues, difficult getting around and 
antenna problems & nobody to help fix 
them. Better now, most of the antenna 
issues are fixed (have to wait till spring 
to fix the rest) and it was good to be on 
160 again. 

EU wasn't so strong with the exception of 
2-3 stations that were the loudest on the 
bands. No SA, Pacific or Asia this time. 
Sometimes the propagation Gods work & 
sometimes they don't.

Always a good time.

Happy holidays everyone.

Please check out the rules page for the upcoming CQ160 Contest in 2020.
There have been some changes, mostly for the better I hope.

These include:

Low Power is now limited to 100W only.
Assistance is allowed in QRP category.
Single Op Low Power now has both Assisted and Unassisted categories..

Some language has been changed to make things clearer, and to be uniform
with other CQ Contest rules.

Please also check out the PLAQUES that have been sponsored.
There are some plaques that are not yet funded, and we are looking for more
sponsors. Any additional categories can be offered as well if you have an
idea.

Topband: CQ 160 CW 2019 Results - 3V8SF winning SOLP World

Hi All,

The results of CQ 160m 2019 have been published and I'm happy to report 
that I won the SO LP Category in the CW leg.


My story with 160 started with the 3V3S (2009) activity I conducted with 
a German team who put up a ground plane for 160 on the roof of 3V8SS 
shack. The antenna was partly surrounded by buildings. The QTH is in 
Sousse city and I can barely hear/work EU from there using 100W.


When I later operated 3V8BB station (2014) with High Power Capabilities 
and inverted-V for 160, I had access to more further areas but I kept 
receiving emails from many DX stations reporting my signal was very loud 
but I was completely deaf (no RX antenna was used at the time). Never 
imagined the difference an RX antenna could make!


Then I started doing CQ 160 CW from 3V8CB in the south of capital Tunis. 
18m long light tower was used for inv-L and plenty of space around 
allowing the build of a 260m beverage to NA and a switchable K9AY.
The results on the LP category started to be more interesting and gave 
me more appetite to further experiment with RX antennas.


So I decided to develop something in 3V8SF station, 15km away from my 
house. It also has plenty of space around and is few hundred meters away 
from sea. A 17m-long top loaded vertical was built, 16 radials. 
Beverages, BOGs, 4 Square, etc. Very interesting time spent 
experimenting.
This effort brought my worked DXCC count to 130, WAZ to 31 and WAS to 39 
in just 6 months using 100W (20% FT8).


I would like to thank everyone in this reflector for the very valuable 
information you share and all the technical support I'm getting from 
many hams. I'm grateful for all the help they provided.


I look forward to the new season and to work you all. on 160 
CW! :-)

Gracious! I almost feel like I should apologize for sharing my 74-year old,

"youthful" exuberance for having the weekend of my career on TB! To put

things into perspective...

 

1. Since this is my 5th low-band / contesting season from this QTH in

Rockingham County, Virginia, I thought everyone knew where I was located. I

didn't mean to mislead, and certainly was not intending to stick it to my

long-suffering W6 friends in any sort of boastful fashion!

2. Between 1983 and 2013 I worked 186 DXC on 160 from my tiny sandbox in

Fresno, CA. However, it was 22 years, and only after installing a rotating

flag, before I FINALLY worked my first EU! (OZ7YY).

3. From then on, QSOs with EU were few and far between, but one glorious

night in Feb., 2009, I worked 17 EU in one evening. For me, truly amazing!

 

So, how have things changed since the move to VA, and the enchanted East

Coast? Over the weekend, during the contest, I worked HB0 for #224. 38 new

ones in 5 years? Not bad, but not earth-shattering! Oddly, 3 were in OC,

ones that I couldn't work from W6!

 

4. It was only this past December that I finally beat my Fresno record of 17

EU in one evening, with an amazing run of 23.

 

With that background, please forgive me if I mistakenly thought that working

58 EU in one weekend meant that propagation was terrific! As for me and my

meager station in FM08, you will have a difficult time proving otherwise!

Follow the link to the rules. Basically, stay in the USA band. Regions outside 
of the USA have different band segments than we do. (Important if you are on a 
DXpedition and want to work JAs.) Also, it would be good to stay out of the FT8 
segment.

As the 2017 contest approaches, I wanted to update everyone on some
improvements to the web site.

Thanks to the hard work of Randy K5ZD, we now have a database of scores
from 2004 forward. We are looking for volunteers to type in scores from
years before that to complete the job.
If you can help, let us know and we will be very grateful.

The biggest change is that all certificates are available online only.
But EVERYONE can print their own certificate, for any prior contest and any
result.
Your score and standing will show for that entry.

This thread is getting dangerously close to being totally irrelevant to the
mission of this reflector.

There are MANY contest rules that can't be enforced.  This is just making
it clear what the intention is - and to allow those who are using remote
receivers a place to compete.

This came up last year, and I pointed out it is a game changer.  A station
can now operate full duplex by having a remote receiving site.

A few folks indicated they came close to being able to do this within the
confines of their own property, but it looks like they decided to proceed.

It is only available to SOA(HP), but it will be interesting to see what the
final outcome is.

I feel those competing for the top scores, would need multiple remote
receivers (not allowed by the rules) and would suffer from latency.

What this does do, is allow some limited operation with a single remote
receiver.

disqualification.

Hi Mike.

To clarify;

The rule for allowing remote receivers is for Single Op ASSISTED only.
It does not matter what power level you use.
Multi Ops CANNOT use remote receivers. Single operator Unassisted CANNOT
use remote receivers. Power levels do not matter.

There is no separate listing for LP or QRP in ASSISTED.
All power levels are listed together in the ASSISTED category.
If you use the DX Cluster, skimmers or any spotting assistance you are
ASSISTED (except Multi-ops). If you use a remote receiver you are ASSISTED.

I was only active from Saturday evening on.
Had the idea that there were more participants as last years.

About the DX, I did not hear a lot of asian stations, and those that I 
hear were very weak. Did not work Japan.
Till about 02:00 UTC I did only work 5 NA stations, and signals were not 
good.
I took a break and from 03:00 I was on again. After that time I worked 
several eastcoast NA.

Signals were like on 20m. But almost no midwest.

From half hour before sunrise (sunrise at 07:30) I also worked AZ and 
CA and several caribbean stations. Signals like 20m.


After sunrise band closed pretty fast. Last dx at 07:33 with W0AIH.
I stopped at 07:45.

Sunday evening was the same, only EU no Asia, only some middle east 
heard. (Not worked as too many stations only calling and not listening).


I did work 2 TX stations, but used to work more.

Mexico, and only two JA's (one each morning).  I worked one of them

I thought it was just me, Mike, who's been grousin' about poor conditions! I 
don't have exotic receive antennas so, in the context of being located in s/w 
Utah with a top-loaded 43' vertical and a new Ten Tec 539 QRP transceiver which 
I was using for my QRP entry (which I dearly loved to use - first time with a 
receiver that truly could filter out near by alligators): - east coast signals 
were noticeably weaker than in the past two CQ WW events. Some states areas, 
e.g. New England, were  continuosly weak. - southwest signals, particularly NM 
and AZ were BOOMING in here.  - mid west states, e.g., WI, IL, IN and MI were 
not up to par, strength wise, from years past, but more easily copyable than 
MN,   OH, MO and SD, for instance.- CA and OR were two states I heard 
consistently over the weekend but they would fade, occasionally. Never heard a 
WA until   Saturday evening.- Heard a couple of JAs and an HL and did get a 
couple of ??? from one of the JAs but, with QRP power, wasn't 
 expecting to  work him.  Note: I did work three JAs three or four years ago

time frame 27. Jan 06z - 07z. 
Went west up to the border between zones ITU-7/ITU-8 (TN, MI, OH, WV, IL, WI, 
KY, IN).
Farest west was K0DI in NE.
All time before was disappointing.

 CA and several caribbean stations. Signals like 20m.
 
 After sunrise band closed pretty fast. Last dx at 07:33 with W0AIH.
 I stopped at 07:45.
 
 Sunday evening was the same, only EU no Asia, only some middle east 
 heard. (Not worked as too many stations only calling and not listening).
 
 I did work 2 TX stations, but used to work more.

Heard/worked W/K best on Sunday morning during 1 hour before SR here (06.55z),

I heard much more W/K but was unable to deciffer them or hear exchanges due to 
VY much and VY strong EUs nearby working EUs or calling CQ side by side up to 
1.880 kc ... Didn't know yet how much EUs are active on TopBand. To overcome 
this situation we should think about split as we did on 40m some years before. 
W/K should calling DX in the range of 1.800 ... 1.810 kc and listen above 1.810 
kc or so. Heard several W/K below 1.810 kc. But also heard EUs answering them 
while out of the band.

Any better proposal, please ?

The reason we have split on 40M is only lack of a coordinated band plan between 
EU and W/VE. It is far and away not a desirable situation. I have been a ham 
who regards 40M as his home stomping grounds for (lets count them) 5 different 
calendar decades now. I have seen the SW BC stations mostly leave, and this has 
helped enormously. I hope that before I die that 40M bandplans are 
rationalized. Even though the split is most obvious on phone, it unnaturally 
constrains CW operations too. Holding a run freq without a kilowatt in a 40M DX 
test is nigh impossible and this hurts rates on both sides of the pond.

The 1810 wall is unfortunate for EU's. On our side of the pond, we have 160M 
phone guys from 1855 or so up, and that's less of a wall but still there. 
Again, we need rationalized band plans. Every time I meet anyone having 
anything to do with IARU/ITU I ask, what can I do to help?, and I will now 
include 160M rationalization as well as 40M rationalization.

I would not encourage split on 160 during a contest except maybe for 
DXpeditions that actually followed a well announced narrow split. Certainly 
having two dxpeditions split and within a few kHz of each other, is a complete 
disaster, even on the high bands. There's no good reason why a DXpedition 
should mess up 5, 10, 15 kc of spectrum during a high usage period. A think a 
narrow split could work.

P.S Todd WD0T (SD) and others are on 80M CW every Thursday night (your 
Friday AM) circa 0250Z in the NS sprint. Sometimes we have EU participants 
join in, and appreciate them!

Been testing the inverted L that i install few weeks ago.last night work couple 
caribbean stations and also few north american .band been pretty noisy at this 
end.but this morning was less noisy. work few VE and north america pretty easy 
, i just run 100 watts( no amplifier ).
I notice that few north american station with real good signal here (kp2 - st 
croix), were not copying they just keep  calling without space between cq's.

often myself.

My guesses are, they are either not even listening, just trying to keep their 
claim to that frequency by the never ending cq's. I say it that way, because 
they don't seem to even leave enough space between their never ending, 
automated 
cq's, to even hear a station if they was one attempting to answer.

Or maybe they have some really good directional antennas and are listening 
towards some part of the globe I'm not on, hi hi.

Then again it could be their receive capabilities are being limited by QRN/QRM 
that I can't hear.

But it is pretty upsetting when you have waited until the big gun stations are 
in bed, so you will not have to compete with them in the pileups, and can hear 
the station calling cq so well, and yet it seems your answers to their endless 
calls are being ignored. You are not alone Jimmy.
