Can anyone tell me how to prepare this RG-6 (F-6) for snap-n-seal
connectors? Do I fold the braid back over the jacket? If so, how far?

And is the same true for RG-11 (F-11)?

The temp is going to drop here in two days and I won't be able to do this
after that in time for the Stew Perry. Since the list is in moderated mode,
I'd appreciate a cc to my e-mail address.

There's not time to buy the coax stripper.

Thanks in advance!

Topband: PE coated RG6

2012-12-15 Thread Craig Clark
I would like to thank everyone who replied to my question both in PM’s and
in the respective forums. As many of you know, I have been making cables for
years professionally but this one, like connectorizing RG174, stumped me.

The issue is getting compression F connectors on the PE coated RG6 I am
using to feed my K7TJR four square receive array. I have never had a
problem putting F connectors on my PVC coated RG6.

The problem is getting the PE to expand enough to accept the ground
“innards” of the F connector and properly seat the center conductor of the
coax with the foam at the end of the opening.

I have tried heating the PE and that works, kinda. Doing it in the field far
from the house, on a cold winters day, means you have to judiciously use a
torch to “warm” the PE. One suggestion was to use hot water. I will give
that a try later today.

The suggestion that has worked on three test connections came from Joel at
the RFC, another cable manufacturer. He suggested doing the standard cable
prep as you would do for PVC. He then suggested two ½” lateral cuts in to
the PE at the 12 and 6 positions and then push the connector on to the
cable. Eureka! Joel also suggested using the older crimp F connectors in
lieu of compression fittings. I have done both in my testing and am able to
get a good connection with both.

Using Joel’s suggestion, I’ll be remaking the splice where the coax was
crushed hopefully this afternoon before the snow comes.

I did speak to Lee at Hi-Z yesterday and he warned me about substandard
quality F double females. He has had terrible problems with them.

Special thanks to you all for helping me especially Joel, W3RFC and Roger,
N1RJ who sent me data sheets for F connectors.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all the best for 2013

Craig, what does lateral mean here - parallel to or perpendicular to
the length of the cable?

Lateral or along the axis of the coax.

I was confused too at first when Joel told me what to do.

No problem at all here, using two or three types of compression F
connectors. PE jacket flooded direct burial RG6 type cable, one foil
and braid, NOT quad shield. They have been in service now for 4
years with no issues. Best part is my local squirrels don't seem to
like the taste of polyethylene.

An old trick that works with hoses on barb connectors is to
heat up the hose by dunking it in a jar of hot (near boiling)
water. Works every time. I'm thinking that one quick dunk
in water won't hurt the RG6 if you dry it out afterwards with
a heat gun. You could also try heating the coax with the heat
gun instead of using hot water.

If you try this, let us know how it works. BTW, where do you
buy PE jacketed RG6; I'm looking for some for my satellite TV
feed.

2012-12-14 Thread HAROLD SMITH JR

Just completed cables for an active receive 4 square with Commscope PE jacketed
flooded RG6  (660-BEF), 1000' on ebay for $35.  I used the weathertight
compression fittings and a Radio Shack stepped prep cutter.  RS has the tools
cheap.  Extra care is needed to remove the braid shards since the flooding goop
causes them to stick to everything.  It is also a challenge to push the cable
far enough into the connector, next time I'll try the heat gun idea.  I found
trimming the braid away with a flush cutting wire snipper was helpful, but
still
have pretty sore hands.

Grant KZ1W

Grant,

Did you use the screw-on tool from RS to push the connectors on the RG6?
It sure makes it a lot easier. I use only the crimp style connectors.
