Re: Topband: ZL and W6KIP?? back in the 60's?
Although I was on 160 in the late 1960's from Southern California as WB6NRK, I was lucky to work into the next call area with my homebrew 6L6 transmitter with two crystals, Gonset G-66 receiver and a Hy-Gain Hytower with no radials. Who needed radials when I had six ground rods? LMAO. They still were having Transpacific DX tests back in 1969-1970 and I did actually manage to work a JA with my meager setup which I found hard to believe until I got his QSL from the bureau a year later. My first ZL was Bob Tanner, ZL2BT who I worked in 1977 on SSB using a Swan 270 with a homebrew 160 meter transverter that I built myself. In 1983, I visited ZL and spent a night at ZL2BT's farm in Palmerston North. His setup was amazing. Bob had set up a sked with good friend Otto W5YU (SK) who was 20 over 9 when he came on at ZL sunset and when I finished with Otto, worked around 50 more US station on SSB. What an experience that was. ZL2BT became an SK a few years after that and his call his been reissued. Re: Topband: ZL and W6KIP?? back in the 60's?
Thanks to all for the correction of VE7BS's callsign. ZL2BT was also my first ZL on the band - worked when I was still in W6 I believe. I am not sure who Alex would have been on the W6 side. The first person I was aware of working DX from California was W6NJU - who later became KI6T. Gary lived just a couple of miles away from my QTH and had enough space to put up a full sized antenna on 160. He came to our small local contest club (West Valley ARC) and talked about all the DX he was working and I was intrigued. This would have been around 1970 I think. I do know that W7RM (SK) was active on 160 in 1970 based upon this entry into HS5ABD's log - https://www.kkn.net/n6tr/160/HS5ABD-160.jpg. HS5ABD is better known now as K3ZO now. Too bad the K1ZM web page about W1BB is no longer up. That had a lot of good reading. There are scans thanks to WA5POK of a CQ Magazine article about Stew on the Stew Perry Topband DIstance Challenge web page that makes interesting reading - www.kkn.net/stew just down a few paragraphs. As for my "early" 160 story - you can read about it here - https://www.kkn.net/n6tr/tbdisease.html Am clearing off some trees on top of the hill of the new QTH to get my "big" Steppir back up (three full length elements on 40) and load the tower for 160. Hoping to have it and the Hi-Z 4 square back up before the October contests come around. Have lots of room for beverages - so hoping to phase some in the important directions as things evolve here. Will be interested in any signal reports if you hear me on the band this season. How many guys worked JA3ONB or JA7NI as their first JA on 160? 73 Tree N6TR/7 Manning (not so Boring), Oregon On Fri, Aug 3, 2018 at 5:59 AM, m.r.c. wrote: > Hi Ron > > do not remember the ZL callsign, or even the W6 call for sure, but it was > 1960-1961 ZL3BT does not ring > a bell, but that was a LONG time ago I am almost sure it was Alex and a > call W6KIP or close to it. Hi Ron do not remember the ZL callsign, or even the W6 call for sure, but it was 1960-1961 ZL3BT does not ring a bell, but that was a LONG time ago I am almost sure it was Alex and a call W6KIP or close to it. Of course, that call has been reissued at least twice, maybe more. I remember listening often to his calls, and sometimes he did work the ZL. He was on schedule religiously. Every night I think. Very much CW- the band was far too tough for SSB at 100 watts, or in that era, even 1 KW input Guess I should look in a 1960 callbook, but all that will tell me is this side of the contact. thanks for responding 73 Robin, WA6CDR - Original Message - From: "vk3io" To: "m.r.c." ; Sent: Friday, August 03, 2018 03:00 Subject: Topband: ZL and W6KIP?? back in the 60's?
