Hi

My evening - 90 QSOs with Europe

My night - 3 QSOs with Europe

My morning - 4 QSO NA, 1 QSO - SA, 1 QSO - EU...

he loudest DX was the NP2X

I have all the sound recordings.

It's early spring here in the south of Ukraine. Season 160 is almost

over for me. And, of course, I hope to live to see the next one.

Topband: Spring Stew Perry Preliminary Results

2019-03-14 Thread Tree
It was great to hear all of the activity on 160 meter CW last weekend in
the Spring Stew Perry test. We have already received 340 logs. There is
still plenty of time to submit your log if you haven't already.

Perhaps you noticed our new web page which includes a spiffy new log upload
feature thanks to Bruce, WA7BNM. Most people are using this to upload
their logs. There is also another app, that allows you to easily enter
information if you kept a paper log.

The preliminary scores were initially posted about 8 minutes after the end
of the contest, and they have been updated fairly often as more logs have
arrived. Most scores have increased by 10 percent or more due to the
multipliers they get for working LP and QRP stations. For example, the
current #1 score from ZF9CW went from 3,953 points up to 4,559 points.
Stan certainly had a big signal putting 74 Europeans in his log in addition
to 14 Asians. I worked him here in Oregon just after my sunset easily.

A new feature in the score listing shows the average distance of the QSOs
you made. This was suggested by John, W2GD. It really shows how those
further away from Europe and the East Coast of the USA have an advantage to
overcome the increased difficulty of making QSOs. The stations in the
Southern Hemisphere easily "win" this category. CX6VM's average is 9480 km
for example.

Also - another thank you to Bruce, WA7BNM and Ash, KF5EYY for their help
with improving the look and feel of the stew web page.

http://www.kkn.net/stew

If you missed this event, it is only 3 months until the next one - the
Summer Stew, which will be held on June 15th.

Surprise!! The Spring Stew Perry event is only hours away from starting.

>From 15Z "tomorrow" for 24 hours, the Spring event will take place.

And - we have something new to give you a reason to participate... (que
some Vivaldi) the brand new Stew Perry Quatre Seasons Award!!

This special award - which will likely consist of a plaque - will be
presented to the single-op participant who accumulates the highest total of
points over the four events for a given year.

This is the first event for 2018 - so if you would like to compete for this
award - here is your chance to get an early lead over the competition.

Your points will be counted regardless of which power category you enter.
Note that the low power entry has a 1.5X multiplier and the QRP one has a
3X multiplier. You figure out which category will help your overall total
at the end of the year.

Rick N6RK, my antenna system was beaming your way during QSO. This is
equivalent ERP is about 600W. That antenna gain really helps a lot as I
had a nice chat with Aki in the morning. Aki JA5DQH has a really nice
location. He said he was running HP and asked if I was still running 100W :)

I worry about copper thieves finding my place as I'm always adding more.
Currently there is over 120K ft in the antenna corral. Believe me 1db
makes a difference.

I hope that you have asked that station to clean up his act. Part of
being a gentleman on the band is having a clean, narrow signal without
clicks or phase noise. Out here, N7DD is far broader than he should be.
Other stations that are much louder consume far less bandwidth. I hope

Bob W7RH was extremely loud here BTW. I ran 1500W this
time, which was good because I it took a half dozen
attempts to work KV4FZ. BTW, I worked THREE Virgin
Islands stations in this contest (never did that before).
The other two were easy. I know when I used to have
beverages, they could have very deep nulls, which
could cause me to completely miss loud signals in
certain directions. I found that it was really
helpful to have diversity reception with a low dipole
omni in one ear and the currently selected beverage
in the other ear.

All in all, I'm going to pronounce this contest a great success,
at least this year, because conditions to the east coast were
great. HC2AO called me, which might have been helped
by being near the equinox. Thunderstorm static crashes
were more in evidence than during the winter, but could
be overcome by sending calls multiple times until a
lucky lull in the static happened. Decent activity too,
I worked over 100 stations just fooling around.
Many thanks to Tree for organizing this contest.

Re: code speed. I felt like a slow poke sending at
20 to 24 WPM while some stations were zooming along
at 30 WPM. I just think that top band needs the slower
speed. Rates are not high enough that a few
extra seconds per QSO matters in this contest.
Also, you actually lose time if high speed causes
you to have to ask for a fill.

Sorry Bob that I appeared deaf but I had the Beverages on EU most of the
time to reduce the clix from a nearby local station. I did work later
both KH6ZM and KH6AT and both were very strong when they called me. Also
many W6's and W7's are in my log. Condition to EU were good so I
concentrated on the 20-30 pointers there until after EU S/R and then
resorted to a broken West Beverage on the ground (knocked down by a deer
and without termination) to work stations to the NW. This knocked down
the clix but the the stations calling me signals were still there and
readable just out of the noise level which was zero with the broken
antenna. This proves that you can't ever have too many RX antennas on
160 meters even if they are laying on the ground.

good for this late in the season. I had installed a new logging
computer and was into the event 2.5 hours when I discovered system

Highlights. A rag chew with Aki, JA5DQH in the morning. A contact with

I'm going to submit log but times might be buggered. I only worked
about 1/3 of expected QSO's due to problems with logs etc.

It was nice to hear the band come alive with some activity for a change.

copying me pretty quick taking in consideration that i just run 100 watts, band

the cw tones are perfect.did some changes in N1MM winkeyer section but still

Heard Jim, K9JWV, around 0216z with good sigs, but couldn't get his
attention.

Caught Jim, K9YC, calling CQ low in the band, gave it a try and made an
easy QSO. Jim/YC's QRP sigs have been getting better the last few
contests compared to prior years as we are heading down the backside of
the cycle. Cpngrats on working CT!

So far worked maybe a couple dozen or more west of the Rockies, KV4FZ,
NP2X, KH6ZM, and GW3YDX with the '28 MOPA; hand still in good shape
despite many CQs on the bug.

I'm about to pull the plug, sun is out here and my short nap in the
wee AM didn't help much. Excellent Jim made his QRP contact with CT,
nice to get something difficult, accomplished.

Best distance for me at my 99W was T32CO. Missed a few stations that
couldn't hear me, especially a bunch of EU on early in the test. Did
get Italy though.

2016-03-10 Thread Tree
The new instance of the Stew Perry contest will take place this weekend -
starting at 1500Z on Saturday.

Full rules can be found here - http://kkn.net/stew/.

The scores for the December Running are available on the web site as well.
We will have the write-up and plaque winners posted later.

Please be aware of any DX-pedition activity that might be on the band and
avoid QRM to them.

Hi Jim,

Thanks. I started getting RF power out on transmit! I still have a lot
to do. It's rude and crude! I spent enough time with the scope and
generator today that as soon as I had some RF out of it I quit for the
day. Staying at it too long leads to mistakes and frustration :)

Alignment, balancing, phasing are next. And oh by the way - nice to have
some idea of operating frequency. The dial still needs repair. I can
tell when I'm inside the ham band but more precision than that - not yet.

Hi,

Somebody mentioned the Stew is coming 'round again so I finally
remembered to look it up. It will be here a week from Saturday. I have
been 'on a roll' at my workbench getting the old radios operational
again. I am going to flog myself attempting to have the station ready to
get on the air with a patched up antenna (frost is still in the ground).
My Atlas 180 is coming along pretty well. I stopped using it about
twenty years ago (where did the time go!) and it has deteriorated just
sitting on the shelf. Magic? It is receiving pretty well now. Most of
the transmitter is trying to work now. It wouldn't even think about it
last week. No RX. No TX. Nada. I printed a copy of the voltage charts
and I'll use that to isolate the trouble. I can see that somebody in the
past made some "improvements" or at least some repairs. I suspect a
broken wire or a solder joint. Maybe one of those pesky electrolytic
caps. At high volume the RX audio is "raspy" and I have been ignoring
that - keep the volume down to just my garage.

And the DX-100 is wanting to work. It would be great to have both
available. The Kenwood R-599 has 160 on it and works as well as it ever
did. Just needs a TX to go with. The matching T-599 does NOT have Top
Band. What's up with that? I do have a real life aside from ham radio
(like most of us) so I will have to *focus* to be on 160 in time for the
Stew. I hope to see you on the air - *soon*.
