There is no torrc installed. You can create it wherever you want and
pass the path to it via '-f' option to tor:

$ ./src/or/tor -f /home/bunny/lol-torrc

On most of the systems it can be found at /etc/tor/torrc.

Yes, 'tor' binary should be enough. You can keep default torrc if you want.

[tor-relays] halp #2

2016-08-23 Thread Markus Koch
Sorry to bother you guys again

Its 6am here and after reading the FAQ and other install guides I am
out of ideas

I just complied TOR (hurray!) on a NON-ROOT server.

1. Issue: I cant find the torrc file. I found out that the rest of the
stuff is in ~./tor but no torrc at all. Where is it/should I put it?

2. Issue: I only need the complied TOR executable and I can safely
delete all the other stuff?

Cheers,

Re: [tor-relays] #torstrike

2016-08-23 Thread Zack Weinberg
Personally, the expulsion of Appelbaum and the replacement of the board
make me *more* confident in the Tor organization. The relays I run,
B6C7FAFFFCEFC30541D38F33E25B1E0DB135C5D8 (non-exit) and
78C7C299DB4C4BD119A22B87B57D5AF5F3741A79 (exit), will NOT be
participating in this "strike".

I am making this announcement because we have to physically move the
computer running the exit sometime in the next week or so, and it may be
down for a couple of days, depending on how long it takes the network
admins to reconfigure things. This is merely an unfortunate coincidence
of timing. The non-exit will remain up.

Just an idea: how about having a built-in feature in tor to
backup/restore? This feature could make an "archive" with correct
metadata. Thus relay operator won't bother to collect all
relevant files and correct permissions. Also it would make it much
easier to move a relay to absolutely different system (E.g. tor user was
`debian-tor` and it's `_tor` on the new one. Also different locations,
like Windows/Darwin/BSDs/Linux).

Asking for comments before creating a ticket since this idea can be
inherently wrong.

Thanks,

This seems to be only the content of the keys/ subdirectory… my relay
also has some other files in /var/lib/tor/, most significantly (it would
seem) a fingerprint file. Did you copy these other files as well, and
they’re just not included in the screenshot?

Well, it looks like wrong permissions to me. The files and the directory
is owned by your current user "bunny". Is this also the tor user, or is
tor using the user "tor" (which should be the default)?

Currently, no other user but "bunny" can read from or write to those
files and it's the only user that can look into the current directory.

I copied all the stuff, checked it and deleted the old vps. So I only see the
new logfiles and they are fine, tor finds everything but with a different
fingerprint. If the config would be in a different dir on the old vps, how

Here's the FAQ entry:
https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq#UpgradeOrMove

It sounds like you did that though.

Sounds like it's time to debug and question your assumptions. :)

For example, were they both Debian systems, using the Tor deb? I am
wondering in particular if the new Tor thinks it should be using that
DataDirectory.

Do the log files give you any hints?

I'm guessing this is the 'niftyguineapig' relay?

Atlas is a JavaScript application that gets all the data from Onionoo
[1] backend. And Onionoo in its turn gets [2] data from MaxMind's GeoIP
database [3].
Thus it's as reliable as MaxMind GeoIP is reliable. Agree, it's not
godd. Current status of this (or closely related) issue you can track at
