Merry Christmas from President Obama and the First Lady

President Obama and the First Lady just gave their annual holiday message from the White House for the last time. Check it out:

They talked about the values that bring Americans together over the holiday season:

The First Lady: The idea that we are our brother’s keeper and our sister’s keeper. That we should treat others as we would want to be treated. And that we care for the sick, feed the hungry, and welcome the stranger, no matter where they come from, or how they practice their faith.

The President: Those are values that help guide not just my family’s Christian faith, but that of Jewish Americans, and Muslim Americans; nonbelievers and Americans of all backgrounds. And no one better embodies that spirit of service than the men and women who wear our country’s uniform and their families.

And they called on us to support the Americans who serve us all year round: our men and women in uniform.

The First Lady: As always, many of our troops are far from home this time of year, and their families are serving and sacrificing right along with them. Their courage and dedication allow the rest of us to enjoy this season. That’s why we’ve tried to serve them as well as they’ve served this country. Go to JoiningForces.Gov to see how you can honor and support the service members, veterans and military families in your community -- not just during the holidays, but all year round.

So make sure to watch -- and stay tuned for a throwback clip.

"So as we look forward to the New Year, let’s resolve to recommit ourselves to the values we share. And on behalf of the all the Obamas -- Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Bo, and that troublemaker Sunny -- Merry Christmas, everybody."

Neither actually, just bad phrasing. I already run 3 relays under the
outfall moniker, just setting up a new relay since I want to play around
with scaleway. Though this will be the last node I will put on Online... If
I add anymore I will try to aim for each one to be on a different network.

And the tshirt is pretty awesome, currently rocking the green one. I
figured it's a seasonal colour so why not?

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for wanting to run relays!

For 4 relays, you'll want at least 2 IP addresses, since we try to
not make it easy for somebody to spin up too many relays on too few
IP addresses.

Now you know, so it won't come as a surprise later. :)

The tor package from deb.torproject.org ships a little script that helps
you with that:

tor-instance-create

https://gitweb.torproject.org/debian/tor.git/tree/debian/tor-instance-create.8.txt

torrc files will be located under
/etc/tor/instances//torrc

and you can use the usual systemctl commands to manage them
systemctl start tor@

Or if you are planing to run more than one server or want to use the
relatively new OfflineMaster key feature without all the manual steps
you can take a look at ansible to manage your tor instances.

This is probably a bug. Try to switch log level to "info" - tor should
provide a more detailed backtrace saying something like "Address came
from...". Please don't forget to sanitize log from irrelevant private data.

Re: [tor-relays] Reset torrc file

2016-12-24 Thread Petrusko
Hey!

I've updated an "old" Debian8 server not plugged since a long time ago,
with Tor from Debian repo,
and when updating it with a "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade",
when Tor package has came, it asked :

*** torrc (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [défaut=N] ?

Sry for french, so quickly, it asked if I want to use the new torrc file
from repo, yes or no, and No was the default choice (what I've done).
Tor has automatically restarted without any problem.

So in your case, it can be Webmin automatically answered "Yes" to this
previous question, and the update has removed your torrc file, and the
new has been set up...?
(Ive not used Webmin since many years, I don't know if it can be
possible to upgrade without any questions...?)

Number of connections is a very indirect metric. Especially any
somewhat-used relay will have connections open to most of the bigger
relays, since the paths for which this relay is selected come from and
go to arbitrary relays, weighted by their bandwidth. So if you have
few connection, this is an indication that your relay doesn't get used
much. (My numbers are around 4000 and 2000 for the two of mine, with a
factor of eight between them in the carried traffic).

I never noticed anybody did. The number of connections only come into play when

- your VPS has a connection limit that is too low,

- you're connected to the internet via a NAT/state-keeping router/modem/thingy
that can't handle as many simultaneous connections.

> My guess is you can have a large number of dead connections.

Actually no. They time out. And probably actually yes, as many
connections may not be in use at a specific given point.

Hi Chip Marshall,

thanks for adding so many new FreeBSD relays!

Please do not forget to set the MyFamily parameter in your torrc

Since you know ansible already you might also use it to do that
automatically.

I am even more confused than you. My 1300 connections relay has a consensus
weight

of 38 (thirty eight). That’s less than 1% of your weight, despite having 26%
the number of connections you have. Besides, I could never understand why
people measure the “size” of the relay by the number of connections. My guess
is you can have a large number of dead connections.

This is just another example of the lack of clear metrics and feedback to relay
operators on the quality of their relay, including how well the relay is doing
in terms of its usefulness to Tor, and especially of (direct or easily derived)
actionable recommendations on how to improve its quality, including abandonment
if it is harmful to Tor in its current form.

Rana

PS I guess this may not be that simple as possibly some relays are getting
bashed because they are suspected of being rogue. Still, a mechanism of quality
feedback is needed for the (hopefully the majority) of the relays that are run
by bona fide volunteers.

PS I guess this may not be that simple as possibly some relays are getting
bashed because they are suspected of being rogue. Still, a mechanism of quality
feedback is needed for the (hopefully the majority) of the relays that are run
by bona fide volunteers.
