Re: [tor-relays] Atlas is now Relay Search!
Thanks for a considered reply. I accept that all that is done under the surface is done for the good of Tor. It is the pointless game I object to such as amusing a few by changing Atlas to New Atlas when Atlas represented a function which we rely on and we will use under another 'brand'. (Helping a woman stopped in a dead Lexis I told her Toyota's were unlikely to have big faults. She pompously rejected that as it was much superior to a Toyota and shrivelled into silence on seeing Toyota in huge letters on the engine block.) Just time wasting games. Hi, On 14/11/17 21:49, I wrote: > Can anyone explain how changing things to The New such as Arm to Nyx > and Atlas to Relay Search advances anything apart from boredom? In the case of Atlas/Relay Search, we are consolidating codebases into something more maintainable, with less code duplication and general duplication of effort. By integrating Relay Search into the Tor Metrics website, we will also move towards a more seamless UX and making it easier to discover related data, the sources of the data and any analysis that might be useful. On the surface it may look that all that's changed is the theme and the name, but a lot is going on underneath too. Re: [tor-relays] tor-relays Digest, Vol 82, Issue 23
Using the Tor Browser must have been a joke, because your traffic will route through the exit nodes, and those exit IPs will presumably be on the same blacklists. I'd recommend you don't run a relay at home. Switch it to a bridge. Bridge IP addresses are (usually) not published and thus are not subject to blacklisting.___ tor-relays mailing list tor-relays@lists.torproject.org https://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tor-relays

So your current resource references probably look like: https://atlas.torproject.org/resource.js But a cache-breaker would look like: https://atlas.torproject.org/resource.js?v1.1 Then when you change any code in the file, you update the version: https://atlas.torproject.org/resource.js?v1.2 This usually doesn't require any web server support, because the parameter is ignored by the server, which serves the most recent version regardless. It's just there to tell the cache that the code has been updated. Of course, this is annoying to update if your site embeds a reference to the resource on every page, rather than listing URLs in a config. Atlas definitely looked lighter, more airy. The new UI looks dense and dated, with that Microsoft Office style table from the 90s. Oh well, I'll get used to it - at least it is not yet another "Web 2.0" Bootstrap. The idea of merging Atlas into Metrics is definitely a good one. Kind regards Kalle If you're running an exit, they probably saw abusive traffic, didn't like it, and blocked your IP. You could consider not running an exit relay from home. If you're running a non-exit, then they're being dumb for blocking your IP when it is impossible for abusive traffic to come from your relay. Some webmasters who don't understand Tor do that, but there's not really anything we can do. Best I can suggest is you try talking to them, which isn't a very satisfying suggestion, I know. Re: [tor-relays] my IP got blocked
Hi, It's not the first time I hear about Non-Exit IP blocked (but may be some people here are more familiar with the subject) : I don't really know what are the most used interfaces/websites from which those administrators are getting the list of IP addresses before blocking them (are they downloading the full consensus list like tor clients or from another website ?). May be websites proposing these lists should split them in 2 distinct lists, and normally show only exit nodes unless something very precise is asked by the user for seeing all tor relays including non exit. For lazy/angry administrators trying to definitely block all Tor IP addresses without considering giving any another time or second chance it would avoid some of these non exit relays blocked ? Of course ideally those administrators are doing some mistake and the problem is coming from them more than from anybody else (or may be bad users, too). But into the facts, when a mistake is repeatedly done, may be changing some things should be considered ? If possible of course (it's not always simple or quick). Hi Iain! Great stuff! Thanks for this and letting us know also, I would have been very confused as I use Atlas all the time :). Quick question for you. Atlas used to have the search box at all time in the corner which for me was very useful because I could do many search without an extra click to go back one level down like the new site has. How crazy would it be to bring it back? Always hovering in the top corner? :) Maybe a ticket would be a better way to ask? Big thanks! [tor-relays] Atlas is now Relay Search!
Hi All, You may notice that Atlas has a new look, and is no longer called Atlas. For now no URLs have changed but this is part of work to merge this tool into the Tor Metrics website. The style is determined by the Tor Metrics Style, and modifications have been made to fit this. The decision was made to deploy these changes before the actual integration into metrics.torproject.org to allow for other issues to be worked on. This was a big change and it was tricky maintaining two branches of the codebase. Issues should still be reported on the Metrics/Atlas component in the Tor trac if they arise. When we come to full integration, URLs will change but there will be a period where we maintain redirects to prevent any URLs from breaking while waiting for being updated. Re: [tor-relays] HS and relay - same server different tor instance
I understand the downtime correlation issue. What i wanted to achive with this is to get some decoy tor traffic going from the same address so if someone does some snooping around they can see that theres a relay running - I guess its a compromise between keeping a lower profile by not exposing public ip through a relay or having relay traffic as a decoy to tor activity best regards,b 14.11.2017, 01:21, "teor": On 14 Nov 2017, at 10:54, blaze glory wrote: Hi, Hopefully this list is the right address for this question. I know that running a hidden service and relay from the same tor instance is not advisable to say the least (https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/8742) but what about running a relay and HS on the same ip, different instance (multiple virtual machines using same public ip for example). The purpose of it would be to have some decoy tor traffic (so it looks like relay is creating it not HS) I can imagine some traffic analysis could be done if HS picks the relay on the same ip as RP or IP or guard node. Are there any mechanisms in tor to prevent that? What other downsides are there for running a setup like this? When your relay goes down due to a fault on your machine or its network, the hidden service also goes down. This allows an attacker to match updowntimes, and work out the public IP address of your hidden service.(A similar attack can be used to work out which hidden services arerunning on the same tor instance, machine, or network.)Tor is not designed to hide hidden service traffic in relay traffic, because relays are not anonymous. Instead, Tor hides hidden servicetraffic in client traffic (and, to a lesser extent, bridge traffic). If you want to hide your hidden service traffic, encourage other peoplenear you to run Tor clients, hidden services, and bridges.T --Tim / teorPGP C855 6CED 5D90 A0C5 29F6 4D43 450C BA7F 968F 094Bricochet:ekmygaiu4rzgsk6n ,___tor-relays mailing listtor-relays@lists.torproject.orghttps://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tor-relays___ tor-relays mailing list tor-relays@lists.torproject.org https://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tor-relays

Done: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/24272#ticket I'm surprised this hasn't come up before: the existing consensus and directory documents are 10MB+, and change every hour. I guess disks are big nowadays… Also, your relay will survive if you set DataDirectory to /var/cache. But it will lose its keys every time /var/cache is cleared, which some distributions do on restart. (This means it will take some time to attract bandwidth and flags after a restart.) It does seem that all paths used by tor are relative to DataDirectory, which has usually been /var/lib/tor. Perhaps a new configuration option for CacheDirectory, and moving caches to that directory, would be useful. It would be up to packagers to actually use that option though, a default of using DataDirectory as CacheDirectory would not be entirely unreasonable for cases where tor is embedded in other software. This would seem worthy of a trac ticket if someone could write one up.
