achievements based on personal demerits then there would be no technological

Hello Tor,

I have a few exit relays on the Tor network but generally I'm flying blind.  Why isn't there an index of tor relays that can be accessed?  Why isn't the tor access via it's website able to deliver me to the software pages?  Why is the graphic display of tor connections over 5-years old?  I thought tor was expert in data delivery and security.

Such a clear explanation would be good to see on torproject.org. -Original Message-From: nusenu-li...@riseup.netSent: Sat, 04 Jan 2020 11:44:00 +To: tor-relays@lists.torproject.orgSubject: Re: [tor-relays] Exit Concentration vs Bulk filters?> I never heard a real technical reason to avoid> high concentration of Tor exit capacity. Let me give you a few examples why a distributed network is in some waysmore resilient to attacks and harder to observe than a centralized.ObservabilityIf all traffic leaves the tor network at a single or very few places, surveillance becomes a lot easier and cheaperwhen compared to a network that is distributed and has many exit locations.Resiliency against outagesIf all capacity is concentrated around just a few locations, local issues/outages have a bigger impacton the overall availability and capacity of the network.Resiliency against software vulnerabilitiesA single operator tends to setup their systems in a relatively similar manner. Most of its relays will use the same OS, OS version, SSL library, tor version, hardware architectureand have a similar good or bad patch level. In such an environment it is more likely that a single vulnerability affects large portions when comparedto a diverse ecosystem. A homogeneous ecosystem also reduces the cost for exploit development.Resiliency against security breachesIf an hypothetical operator controlling 1/2 of the network gets compromised the impact is a lot bigger thanif they were to run 1%. The incentive for an attacker to compromise an operator running 50%of the network is also a lot higher than attacking an operator of 1%.Risk of detectionThe risk of detection is likely higher for an attacker that compromises multiple organizations compared to a singlevictim.Cost of attacksCompromising all relays operated by a single entity is likely cheaper than compromising all relaysrun by multiple independent organizations.Performing a hijacking attack against a single prefix is probably easier than successfully hijacking multiple independentprefixes with different upstream providers concurrently and harder to remain undetected.A DDoS attack against a single AS is likely cheaper than against many targets at the same time. There are also non-technical (organizational and legal) reasons why having a distributed network capacity is beneficial to the tor network.Legally attacking many organizations is more expensive than a single one.If a single operator no longer has the financial capacity or motivation the removal of their relays should nothave a existential impact on the network. If the policy of a hoster changes from 'tor relays allowed' to 'tor relays forbidden'than we better not run all our capacity at a single hoster. In short, you don't want to make the tor network depend on 1-2 or 10 but many.So if a few operators disappear the network remains functional and availableand is generally harder to attack.kind regards,nusenu-- https://mastodon.social/@nusenuhttps://twitter.com/nusenu

Good morning fellow exit node operators,

I am considering adding a dedicated email address (not this one) to be used for my exit nodes on the exit notice pages, where currently none exist. After reading this list for over two years and the stories of DMCA notices, court orders, etc., would an
email address on the page provide some benefit to those parties who need to send complaints and piracy violations, or would it only attract more spam?

I’m also unconcerned about the potential Access Bill passing into law. There’s going to be a general election before it’s even debated in both houses, and we may have an entirely new government by that time. An entirely new government might be unrealistic.  They are both competing for the uninformed voter's fear, uncertainty and doubt. It appears to me that relays of any sort are not covered by the bill, anyway.  I'm depending on the concept of them being equal to a router or an exchange.Robert

That they were not summoned is scandalous.A LAN network is illuminatedThe collective Riseup provides communication infrastructure and has supporters around the world Photo: reutersYou have to imagine it this way: the police are at your doorstep. House search. Why? You are a member of a club that collects donations for Google. And on a blog calling for protests against an AFD party, there's a Gmail address as a contact - so you know who runs this blog?Of course not. Just as little as the members of the association "Onion Friends" need to know what exactly happened, except that the provider is not Google, but Riseup. It is questionable that the members will be brought to witness the appeal as witnesses. The fact that witnesses are not summoned, but armed police searched their homes is scandalous. For the decision of the Bavarian police, there are several possible explanations. None, however, suggests a particularly constitutional self-understanding of the authority. Actionism could have been one reason - because no one was successful in identifying the blog's authorship, the homes were unceremoniously searched by cumbersome people associated with the trial. For the Bavarian police that would be one of the more flattering explanations. Because documents of the association and other organizations located in the searched rooms were confiscated on a large scale, the victims suspect another purpose of the measure: to learn more about the activists themselves. It would not be the first time that alternative rooms are searched for flimsy reasons. And since the G20 summit a year ago, the repressive measures against left-wing infrastructure have increased significantly, especially in smaller cities. As long as the security authorities in this case do not contribute to the clarification, they must submit to the suspicion of deliberate intimidation.

The part to do first and well is the advice for installing and setting-up a
node.
There should be less presumption and more of what to do when the results are
not as stated.

It is odd for such well motivated people to leave such a mess unculled.

The most useful help is outside the website.

I wish I'd known that this is not the place to learn Linux or really how to run
a node securely and efficiently.
Perhaps an acknowledgement of that might bring some other pages or styles of
the current pages.
I'd like to see a collection of correct answers perhaps searchable but
restricted and monitored.

There are some brilliant people who help but there are others who say less
useful things and there's nothing stopping them.

Has anyone wondered why the number of nodes is so incredibly low?

Keifer, thanks,	Try navigating to /var/log/tor/. This is where tor will normally save the log files to. See if there is a tor log text file there. If you have not started your relay, tor might not have created the log file yet.	Try starting the tor software then see if the file appears after that.As it showed before there is no /var/log/tor.I thought I installed it from root but typing tor as root brought /var/lib/tor is not owned by this user (root, 0) but by debian-tor (107)Failed to parse/validate config: Couldn't create private data directory "/var/lib/tor"Rob

Are and or the relay in USA? FYI, I received a subpoena from a US based court to produce information about individual(s) who were using one of our exit nodes at a specific date/time.  In the nearly 3 months that these exits have been in operation, this is the first subpoena and only the second complaint received.  For purposes of documenting the approximate ratio of "complaints / traffic processed", these nodes have handled ~515TB and are using the recommended reduced exit policy.  https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/ReducedExitPolicy

Re: [tor-relays] Atlas is now Relay Search!

2017-11-14 Thread I

Thanks for a considered reply.

I accept that all that is done under the surface is done for the good of Tor.

It is the pointless game I object to such as amusing a few by changing Atlas to
New Atlas when Atlas represented a function which we rely on and we will use
under another 'brand'.

(Helping a woman stopped in a dead Lexis I told her Toyota's were unlikely to
have big faults. She pompously rejected that as it was much superior to a
Toyota and shrivelled into silence on seeing Toyota in huge letters on the
engine block.)
Just time wasting games.
