Just a quick update regarding the project. There are multiple GB's
of data to analyse and it is still being worked on. We are also working
on the public script(s) as well.

is your project still on-going? I'm asking because your score board was
not updated since May (except one test(?) upload in the phase foo-foo)
and though the repository updates are interesting (dynamic download of
relay ips) they were never approved for usage according to your
installation notes.

Dear Renke,
Dear list-members,

Yes, the project is alive. Thank you for asking and for your ongoing
support.

Yes the repo was updated but it is not ready for review yet. We are making
changes for the next traceroute round and will ask for testing / testers as
soon as it is ready. There is also being worked on a reverse traceroute and
we had people at the last tor-dev meeting as well who are trying to figure
out what step to do next.

Regarding your comment on Dynamic download of relay IPs. It's just
downloading the current list of relay IP instead of using a static list. I
don't see any harm in that as one of the participant in the past pointed
out to use the latest IPs anyway.

Theres a lot of work to do with limited human resources, please stay tuned.
We will be back ;-)

Have been seeing some dubious traffic
warnings the last few days on the
firewall from 50.116.9.77, 74.207.228.161
and 109.74.204.217.

Are these IPs performing traceroutes for
your project and can you vouch for them?
If so will it improve your results if
the ICMP TTL-expired packets are
permitted? You should avoid the
duplicate TCP SYNs if you don't
want to annoy people. Maybe explain
exactly (and tersely) how this works.

If they're not yours they go
on the black-hole ACL never to
be seen again.

If I read the script correctly, it tries to upload the data and then

Since the data is probably lost, should I start over?

[tor-relays] Trying Trusted Tor Traceroutes

2014-01-24 Thread Sebastian Urbach

Dear list members,

Some relay operators asked if it would be useful to run the script multiple
times on the same system. The short answer is yes.

It was unclear if enough operators would be willing to help with the script
even one time. No one expected that there would be operators who like to do
more than one run :-)

Thats awesome !

Multiple runs could show temporal routing changes and therefore valuable
new information. The value for multiple runs will be implemented into the
live scoreboard within reasonable time.

Thank you very much for participating !

That is somewhat disappointing. I am in the process of upgrading one
server to FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE and awaiting permission from the security
dept. of my VPS to run the traceroute project. When the upgrade has
completed I will begin the task on that relay and if permission is

Hi,

Of course there are systems still working on the task and probably there
will be a few more wit a complete set of results. Considering the fact that
this project is running for a few months now and based on the starting
dates you can see it does not look good so far.

From what i can see you run the script with traceroute and not with
scamper. That will take roughly 1 month to finish. You started yesterday
and submitted the data from phase 1,2 and 7 runs from phase 3. Since you
are in an early stage i would suggest stopping the script and install
scamper as recommended. ETA will go down from about 30 days go 4 days ...

I am just wondering: My understanding is, that the webpage also shows work

Ok, I didn't check the starting dates so far. I was a little bit lazy
and thought, that enough others would do it so that I could skip this.
But after reading that only 90 sets of data was sent so far I simply
decided that this was completely wrong.

I am wondering about that. I installed scamper (/usr/local/bin and this
is inside the path) and even set the suid root bit as requested inside
the README. And inside the Traceroute-results I have a .scamper file
(but not sure if that is correct or not).
The script is running as normal user and the traceroute command is not
inside the path of the user (it is located inside /usr/sbin).

I started the scan simply with a ./traceroute.sh call

So did I miss something? Thank you for your assistance!

Hi Konrad,

Please check if your files looks like this:

slash24-220.ips
slash24-220.scamper

It would be a lower value than 220 though, just an example. You could check
if there is a scamper and or traceroute process running.

The speed and the filename documented on the site are indicating that you
are running traceroute and not scamper.

If we need to dig deeper i would suggest that we do this via private mail

Dear Tor relay operators,
We have recently received a good rate of
participation by relay operators to our measurement project. To give everyone
an idea of the current participation rate we have hosted a live scoreboard of
all our participants, available at http://128.174.241.211:443/relay_scoreboard

The live scoreboard highlights all the IPs from which we received traceroute
results along with the current status of the script running in their machine.
The live scorebaord also summarizes the participation by the top Tor Families
and the top guard and exit relays.

We thank all the relay operators who have participated and hope more relay
operators will participate soon.

Thanks

Anupam

All

Before starting this (given the Hetzner experiences), I checked with my
VPS provider (DigitalOcean) that they were happy. They have said that
they see no problem, and even if they do later spot an issue they will
take no precipitate action because of my prior alert to them.

So. guard relay 0xbaddad now has the script running.
