Title:
  please drop build-dependency on g++-4.9

Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  The unity8 package currently has a build-dependency on g++-4.9. This
  build-dependency is present because of the recommendations on
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/cpp-11 about handling of C++11.

  The C++11 ABI has now stabilized in gcc as of gcc 5; however, before
  we can switch to gcc 5, we first need to be able to do rebuild tests
  of the archive against this compiler.

  To facilitate this, please drop the build-dependency on g++-4.9 from
  the package in wily. 4.9 will remain the default until all transition
  issues have been identified, so there is no risk of accidental ABI
  breakage here anymore.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  With nVidia hardware from time to time window content is rendered
  black or transparent. The problem manifests more frequently as
  session uptime increases.

  Apparently the problem was caused by textures being cached and not
  freed, resulting in memory exhaustion conditions. It turns out the
  texture caching is unnecessary anyway.

  [ Test Case ]

  Verification requires an nVidia GPU with proprietary drivers. The
  problem can not be reproduced at will, only after some time (depending
  on resident GPU memory and usage) and even then only randomly and
  unreliably.

  [ Regression Potential ]

  It is unlikely this change has the potential to introduce new
  regressions.

  [ Other Info ]

  Fix was cherry-picked from the Ubuntu Vivid Vervet dev relase where
  it has been in use for some weeks without problem.

  What happens:
  * You are taken to a screen that has a progress bar for a minute or two, but
is otherwise empty.
  * You can't uninstall the app.

  What should happen:
  * You should be able to uninstall an app without having an Internet

  If you then turn off Flight Mode and retry, it will still fail as long
  as bug 1478026 is unfixed.

  This is part of a bigger redesign project (Scopes toolkit and scopes

  we've done some work on this project, we already know that these two

Thanks. Will try to merge it in next week, g++5 fun notwithstanding.

  There's a development release in experimental that we could put in a

  Notes:

    - Move dbus-uuidgen unit file patch to using a tmpfiles.d snippet (L

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482641] [NEW] Lightdm (and GDM) source .profile as bash, indirectly sourcing .bashrc

2015-08-07 Thread Murukesh Mohanan
Public bug reported:

The fix for https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/678421
leads to `.profile` being sourced by bash instead of dash. This leads
`.bashrc` being sourced indirectly via .profile. IMHO, `.bashrc` should
not be sourced even *once* in this situation. I suggest that sourcing
.profile actually be done with BASH_VERSION unset:

BASH_VERSION= . $CONFIG

At the very least, a check should be done whether bash is the user's
login shell. It can be done thus:

[ $SHELL != /bin/bash ]  BASH_VERSION=
. $CONFIG

utilizing `$SHELL` given it stores the login shell
(http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/45458/why-shell-doesnt-change-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1480877] Re: Access points' PropertiesChanged dbus signals freeze UI on mobile devices

2015-08-07 Thread Tony Espy
@Andrea

A few questions/requests

1. Please attach your syslog to the bug

2. Are you connected to an access point when the problem occurs?

3. Have you made the phone write-able and installed any packages via
apt-get and/or modified the filesystem in any way?

4. Can you recall any changes that occurred between your original report
and the new level of problems as mentioned in comment #3?

The current version of NM in our images has a bug which prevents
periodic scanning of WiFi access points, so I'm a bit wary to pin this
on NM. Also, the DBus message you point out in comment #3 appears to be
from Upstart, not NM.

  DESCRIPTION:
  I've been trying to track down the cause of the occasional UI freezes on my
Krillin device, and I noticed that whenever the UI freezes for 2-4 seconds, I
get a burst of PropertiesChanged signals in dbus-monitor

  Here's a log of what's shown in dbus-monitor:
  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/11992322/

  I'd guess the problem is in the code that actually catches the signals
  and acts accordingly.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE:
  1) Move to a place where many wifi hotspots are available
  2) Connect the device via USB and run phablet-shell and then dbus-monitor
  3) Use the device while keeping an eye on dbus-monitor output

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1479407] Re: Unicode in translated dates being lost in app previews

2015-08-07 Thread Rodney Dawes
@Albert, weird. Maybe it could be an intermittent issue in boost::locale
or icu then? Or maybe in scopes-api/scopes-shell when handling the
JSON?

I recreated this issue with Greek on my N4 yesterday, but I just checked
again (with no changes at all on the phone), and it seems to be showing
the correct values now.

I started trying to debug this in the click scope yesterday by writing
some tests to verify that the values were getting shoved into the
attributes correctly for the table, in the scope, and printing the JSON
in that test. It was working consistently with that, so I concluded that
the bug must be higher up the stack, and moved it over to unity8, as it
seemed to only be an issue in the second column of the table.

I'm not quite sure how to debug this further to isolate the issue.

  2. Now create dozens
  $ for n in $(seq 50); do ln /var/crash/_bin_dash.32011.crash
/var/crash/_bin_dash_${n}.32011.crash; done
  3. Remove any upload and uploaded files that have been created and reboot
  $ sudo rm /var/crash/*upload* sudo reboot

  ACTUAL RESULT
  Lot of whoopsie-upload-all and apport processes are created on boot, consume
all the resources of the system and make the phone unbootable or partially
functional. OOM killer kills random system tasks such as upstart. Depending on
the processes killed, the phone hangs on boot, reboots, dash doesn't come up...

  The number of crashes in this test is a bit excessive but we can
  imagine a scenario where a dozen of crash files are not uploaded
  because the phone is on cellular data, and uploads everything when it
  connects to wifi, disabling the user session.

  A way to recover is to go into recovery and clean /var/crash.

  EXPECTED RESULT
  crash uploads are serialized and can be uploaded only one at a time
  If system resources are already low, the crash file is not uploaded.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1457915] Re: [Browser] No way to navigate both in private and 'clear' mode at the same time

2015-08-07 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

  I expect to be able to have some tabs in private mode and some tabs in
  'classic' mode at the same time, and navigate on both.

  Also, I expect on desktop that private mode is opened in a new window,
  as for all desktop browser
+
+ --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ For windowed environments (once multi-window mode is supported) we
+ should open a new instance of the browser App for Private Mode.
+
+ For mobile we would not want to introduce mixed private and non private mode
tabs in the tab spread.
+ That said, we should perhaps reconsider our current approach where exiting
private mode causes all private mode tabs to be closed (after confirmation) and
consider allowing private mode tabs to persist within private mode until the
private mode tab itself is closed by the user.
+
+ This would conform to the behaviour observed in/ expected from the vast
+ majority of mobile browsers and address the issues highlighted in this
+ bug.

  2. Scroll down the Network indicator
  3. It lists about 10 AP (In Taipei office)
  4. Go to another place and check network indicator again

  Expected Result:
  It should not list non-exist AP and only show available AP

  Actual Result:
  It shows about 12 AP on the screen but only two are real AP for connecting,
and others 10 are from last list.

  This is reproducible on mako/krillin on both RTM and vivid.

  The main issue is that the timeout for the AP to be removed from the
  known AP list is too big when comparing with other phones.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1467743] Re: Lots of thumbnail requests with invalid size

Pat, are you sure that's really fixed? Three days ago, when I tested
from the silo, there were still problems (see comment #8).

--

Title:
  Lots of thumbnail requests with invalid size

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Fix Committed
Status in gallery-app package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in thumbnailer package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  When using the gallery app, the thumbnailer gets loads of requests
  with QSize(-1,-1), for example, when opening the gallery app.

  The problem with this is that the thumbnailer interprets this to mean
  give me the largest size you can (limited to a 1920x1920 bounding
  box). That's very expensive, especially in terms of disk space,
  because that 1920 thumbnail ends up going into the cache, needlessly
  hogging space.

  We are about to add a qWarning message to the QML side that reports
  invalid QSize requests. For now, we are going to retain the old
  behavior, but this will turn into an error soon.

  The most effective way to use the thumbnailer is to simply ask for an
  image in the desired size, with neither width nor height of -1. The
  thumbnailer will efficiently produce a thumbnail for that. (We do lots
  of internal caching to avoid extracting or downloading a thumbnail
  unnecessarily.)

  The thumbnailer may deliver a thumbnail that is smaller than what was
  asked for (because it never up-scales) so, if asked for a thumbnail of
  size 256, it's guaranteed not to be larger, but might be smaller (if
  the original image is smaller than what was asked for).

  Could you please adjust the gallery app behavior to ask for specific,
  valid sizes only?

  Running a tail -f on ~/.cache/upstart/dbus.log allows you to see the
  requests as they are made. Each request shows the size that was asked
  for.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482512] [NEW] setMonth() and other setXXX() javascript function doesn't work on the date QML object

2015-08-07 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

From http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qml-qtqml-date.html, The QML Date object
extends the JS Date object with locale aware functions..

Some of them indeed works, like getMonth(), getDate(), returning
expected value.

However, when change a date property on a object with setMonth() and
other functions, they don't do anything (and worse, fails silently):

Item {
  id: foo
  property date currentDate
}

foo.currentDate having no databinding.

On a click event handler:
console.log(Before setMonth  + foo.currentDate);
currentDate.setMonth(4);
console.log(After setMonth  + foo.currentDate);

returns:
Before setMonth Sat Mar 7 08:13:50 2015 GMT+0100
After setMonth Sat Mar 7 08:13:50 2015 GMT+0100

The date has been unchanged

** Affects: qtdeclarative-opensource-src (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482504] Re: Putting and then getting dates in a document are altered by u1db

2015-08-07 Thread Didier Roche
** Description changed:

  When putting and getting a QML date in the u1db database, the resulting
  strings are stored differently, even if you don't do any type
  conversion.

  The result is that the resulting date is shifted by the current
  timezone, rendering an incorrect date.

  Small example:

- date is Sun Jul 5 17:20:46 2015 GMT+0200
+ qml: date object to save: Sat Jan 3 08:26:03 2015 GMT+0100

- This value is jsonified in var current = {title:First
- element,date:2015-07-05T15:20:46.000Z}
+ This value is jsonified in var current = {title:First
element,date:2015-01-03T07:26:03.000Z}
+ (so, it offsetted in UTC)

  console.log(Before save:  + JSON.stringify(tosave));
  db.putDoc(tosave, current.billId);
  var after = db.getDoc(current.billId.toString())
  console.log(After save:  + JSON.stringify(afterSave));

  log is:
- qml: Before save: {title:First element,date:2015-07-05T15:20:46.000Z}
- qml: After save: {date:2015-07-05T17:20:46,title:First element}

+ qml: After save: {date:2015-01-03T08:26:03,title:First element}
+ - getDoc() reapplied the timezone offset (and then, assigning that to a Date
variable will reapply again the timezone offest, thinking the string is in UTC).

  - Note that the date element has been altered and isn't returned in the
- same format The date should be returned unalterned.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408159] Re: [messaging] Too easy to delete whole conversation history with a contact

2015-08-07 Thread Michał Sawicz
@Olga, as I mentioned, this is currently inconsistent between dialer and
messaging apps. In dialer you indeed only delete the day's call history,
in messaging all the history of a contact.

I'm not asking for a third step, but some clarification on which is the
desired approach, and maybe a label on the delete button saying clear
history or so. I'm just saying I got bit by this having expected to
delete only a single conversation with a contact, but have deleted all
of them.

  [messaging] Too easy to delete whole conversation history with a
  contact

Status in Ubuntu UX:
  Won't Fix
Status in messaging-app package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Steps:
  * open messaging app
  * drag one of the items on the list to the right
  * tap on the trash icon

  Expected:
  * only today's messages are removed or at least there's a confirmation dialog

  Current:
  * whole history of messaging with a contact is removed

  The fact that conversations are separated by days suggests as if a
  single item was a conversation within that day. But in fact they're
  complete conversations just ordered by date (which is actually
  different than the phone log, which *is* split by date, and removing
  an item there only affects a day's events).

  I wonder if it would be better to indeed show multiple entries for a
  single contact, in each day a message was sent either way, this being
  a shortcut to a certain message when opening. It feels like this would
  be better in the long run (imagine many years of messaging history).
  That might deserve another bug though.

  UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

  --- UX comment  resolution

  There is an active action of
  1. dragging the list item in the conversation overview to the right
  2. tapping the delete icon

  This means that there is already a two step interaction in place
  before the message is deleted, hence no additional confirmation dialog
  is needed. This would place an unnecessary 3rd step in place.

  It wouldn't make much sense to delete just today's messages, because
  you are removing the whole conversation. The behaviour of removing the
  whole message with a contact is intended.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482503] Re: Putting and then getting dates in a document are altered by u1db

invalidating.

Title:
  Putting and then getting dates in a document are altered by u1db

Status in u1db-qt package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  When putting and getting a QML date in the u1db database, the
  resulting strings are stored differently, even if you don't do any
  type conversion.

  The result is that the resulting date is shifted by the current
  timezone, rendering an incorrect date.

  Small example:

  date is Sun Jul 5 17:20:46 2015 GMT+0200

  This value is jsonified in var current = {title:First
  element,date:2015-07-05T15:20:46.000Z}

  console.log(Before save:  + JSON.stringify(tosave));
  db.putDoc(tosave, current.billId);
  var after = db.getDoc(current.billId.toString())
  console.log(After save:  + JSON.stringify(afterSave));

  log is:
  qml: Before save: {title:First element,date:2015-07-05T15:20:46.000Z}
  qml: After save: {date:2015-07-05T17:20:46,title:First element}

  - Note that the date element has been altered and isn't returned in
  the same format The date should be returned unalterned.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482540] [NEW] Uninstalling an app requires Internet connection

2015-08-07 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.04 r89

1. Go into Flight Mode.
2. Go to the Apps scope.
3. Try to uninstall an app by long-pressing on it.

What happens:
* You are taken to a screen that has a progress bar for a minute or two, but is
otherwise empty.
* You can't uninstall the app.

What should happen:
* You should be able to uninstall an app without having an Internet connection.

If you then turn off Flight Mode and retry, it will still fail as long
as bug 1478026 is unfixed.

2015-08-07 Thread Simon Fels
We're actively working on getting this done and BlueZ 5.23 is being
prepared and should soon appear in wily. There is a ppa already which
has all necessary packages for vivid and wily (see https://launchpad.net
/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive/ubuntu/transitions). If you want to help us
testing those feel free to do so and report any problems.

The Touch side of Ubuntu will be updated later too.

  This request aligns with a concept that we've considered when
  designing the new Notification System - support a priority flag for
  notifications and use this information to make ranking and filtering
  decisions. Also, we examined the possibility of offering a system of
  phone 'Profiles' (intended for managing a group of settings or

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1440157] Re: WARNING **: Could not connect to geoname lookup server: Operation was cancelled

2015-08-07 Thread Max Waterman
I can confirm that 0.4.3.1 packages work. I tested :

$ dpkg -l | grep libtimezone
ii  libtimezonemap-data  0.4.3.1
all GTK+3 timezone map widget - data files
ii  libtimezonemap1:amd640.4.3.1
amd64GTK+3 timezone map widget

Notes to others trying this : I made the mistake of thinking that
0.4.3build1 was actually 0.4.3.1, but that is not the case - use 'apt-
cache madison libtimezone-data' to list the versions available and to
make sure you have vivid-proposed enabled, then 'sudo apt-get install
libtimezonemap-data=0.4.3.1 libtimezonemap1:amd64=0.4.3.1' (choose the
appropriate architecture to match 'uname -p' - I used the amd64 version
because I am running x86_64) to install the specific versions (which is
needed if you already installed 0.4.4).

Can you tell me how to add debug in the lower layers to verify it's QML

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482504] Re: Putting and then getting dates in a document are altered by u1db

2015-08-07 Thread Didier Roche
current workaround is to cheat on the saved date in database, meaning,
removing again the timezone to the date object to shift it to UTC (it
will print as time in UTC + (timezone) which is untrue, so only do
that for the database object)

Example, just before putDoc:
tosave[date] = new Date(tosave[date].getTime() +
tosave[date].getTimezoneOffset() * 6)

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

Status in u1db-qt package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  When putting and getting a QML date in the u1db database, the
  resulting strings are stored differently, even if you don't do any
  type conversion.

  The result is that the resulting date is shifted by the current
  timezone, rendering an incorrect date.

  Small example:

  qml: date object to save: Fri Aug 7 08:15:36 2015 GMT+0200 (value
  chosen by the user in a datetime picker: 08:15)

  This value is jsonified in var current = {title:First
element,date:2015-08-07T06:15:36.573Z}
  (so, it offsetted correctly in UTC)

  console.log(Before save:  + JSON.stringify(tosave));
  db.putDoc(tosave, current.billId);
  var after = db.getDoc(current.billId.toString())
  console.log(After save:  + JSON.stringify(afterSave));

  log is:
  qml: Before save: {title:First element,date:2015-08-07T06:15:36.573Z}
  qml: After save: {date:2015-08-07T08:15:36,title:First element}
  - Looking at the sqlite database, indeed, putDoc() saved
2015-08-07T08:15:36 and not 2015-08-07T06:15:36.573Z. And then, assigning
that to a Date variable will reapply again the timezone offest, thinking the
string is in UTC, and resulting in 10:15 instead of 08.15.

  - Note that the date element has been altered and isn't returned in
  the same format The date should be returned unalterned. Then it's up
  to the user to save the timezone independently if they want.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1474078] Re: Provide a way to disable notifications from calendar events

2015-08-07 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I don't see why this is a Calendar bug. System Settings Notifications
screen should automatically list Calendar along with every other app
that has requested a notification since it was last installed. The
Calendar app shouldn't need to do anything special for that. If app
developers have to do anything special to show up in the list, sometimes
they'll forget.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1480877] Re: Access points' PropertiesChanged dbus signals freeze UI on mobile devices

2015-08-07 Thread Andrea Bernabei
It seems I hit an evolved version of this bug.

My phone is right now unusable, dbus-daemon taking 99% of the cpu, and
dbus-monitor shows about 30 signals like this:

signal sender=:1.0 - dest=(null destination) serial=78512
path=/com/ubuntu/Upstart; interface=com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6; member=EventEmitted
   string dbus
   array [
  string SIGNAL=PropertiesChanged
  string BUS=system
  string INTERFACE=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.AccessPoint
  string OBJPATH=/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/AccessPoint/2281
  string SENDER=:1.8
   ]

Every 2-3 seconds I get a new burst of 30-ish signals.

The phone is so slowed down it takes about 15-20 seconds (and some
patience) to be able to just swipe away the lockscreen.

I'll try not to reboot the device right now so that we can keep
debugging it and hopefully get rid of this beast :)

so if there's anyone in the audience who'd like me to get some more
useful logs, please shout! :)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482553] [NEW] LaunchPad asks users to evaluate of a bug is a duplicate of another bug they can see no details of

2015-08-07 Thread Thomas A. F. Thorne
Public bug reported:

Frequently apport will mark a bug that I have raised as a duplicate of a
bug I cannot access (see bug #764414 et. al. for issues that raises).
Whether or not that should happen, it does happen frequently and
Launchpad's behaviour is odd when it does happen.

Based on Bug #1482529 which I raised today, I noticed the following odd
things are disabled.

 1) Top of the page states This bug report is a duplicate of: and that is
all. The bug number is not even displayed. Further down in the comment that
apport made it says:
Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make this
software better. This particular crash has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug #1208209, so is being marked as such. Please look at the other
bug report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide, or
to see if there is a workaround for the bug. Additionally, any further
discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Please continue
to report any other bugs you may find.

information type:   Private → Public
tags:   removed: need-amd64-retrace

As the alleged duplicate is clearly known, why is it not displayed under
the title in the This bug report is a duplicate of: bug #1208209?

 2) Launchpad now seems to block the bug #1208209 for me and greys it
out. That is fine. It provides a pop-up box stating The page at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ says: Bug 1208209 cannot be found. If this
box is provided because the bug does not exist, there is a bug with
apport. If this message is being shown because I do not have permission
to read 1208209 then it should state that. Right now it is suggesting
to the user that apport has picked invalid data as the duplicate.

 3) At the end of the launchpad page is a warning stating Remember, this bug
report is a duplicate of a private bug.
Comment here only if you think the duplicate status is wrong. but there is no
way I can provide a valid comment on whether the status is wrong. Launchpad
knows that I cannot access bug #1208209 so it should be able to infer that I
cannot confirm or deny that it is the correct duplicate or not. I think that
the Comment here only if you think the duplicate status is wrong. part of the
message should be reconsidered.

 4) (possibly apport related and not launchpad) The comment included when this
bug was marked as a duplicate of a non-existent or private bug (I have no way
to say which at present) states:
Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing information
that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the
other report.
I cannot loot at the other bug report.
I cannot see if there is a work around.
I cannot add any information to the other report.
Launchpad knows that I cannot do these things, even if apport cannot.
Launchpad should either remove these messages for me or add something to
confirm it is impossible to follow the requests. Right now it is asking users
to do the impossible.

the click on the avatar or the image, so I need to place MouseAreas within the
list view. This used to work with the old ListViewItemWithActions.

  Actual:
  ListItem does not allow a swipe when it starts on one of those mouse areas.
Meaning, you have to look for free space where you can drag the item, which
is not intuitive and clearly a UX annoyance.

  UX Fix:

  When a mouse is plugged in, the leading and trailing actions should be
  available in the contextual menu. Please look at

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1464711] Re: [Browser] tabs indicator tab gets in the way of content on the page

2015-08-07 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

  In Ubuntu Touch, the web browser tab indicator overlays the content of
  the web page being displayed and it makes some content on the page
  inaccessible. For example: a website's footer links. For optimal web
  browser usability, the web page content should not be obstructed.
+
+ --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ We have a common behaviour for hiding the bottom edge when scrolling
+ begins up-ward begins.
+
+ I would recommend we apply the same behaviour to over-scrolling upward on
pages that are vertically small enough to not require scrolling.
+ In cases like the one described in this bug report, the user is highly likely
to attempt to scroll the page upward in order to see the footer links occluded
by the bottom-edge hint, which would cause the hint to become hidden.

Still no notification alert. That's really bad, if there is no
notification, you can't use this. Without checking every few minutes the
phone, you really miss messages. Many times I get in trouble with my
wife, when she told me, that she send me message in Telegram and I don't
realize it. She waited hours for me.. :-(

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1412780] Re: [Dialogs] Power dialog looks like a tricolor

2015-08-07 Thread Grazina
** Description changed:

  1. Hold down the Power button.

  What you see: A Power dialog appears with a stack of three buttons:
  Power off in red, Restart in green, and Cancel in black. The
  effect is that of a tricolor flag.
  http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Aalsmeer

  What you should see: Something that doesn't look like a tricolor.

  Possible solutions include:
  * Reducing the number of colors.
  * Changing to horizontal icon-only buttons (bug 1377146).
  * Abolishing the dialog somehow.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1273462] Re: Users can mistakenly run init.d scripts and cause problems if an equivalent upstart job already exists

2015-08-07 Thread Hua Zhang
Chris,
   Could you review [Regression Potential] section I updated just now ?
   I think this should be the responsibility of existing packages to make they
are doing the correct thing. This change in lsb should be in the right road,
and the same change has also landed into Utopic, so this change should also
land in Trusty. maybe what we can do now is try to enumerate this kinds of bad
packages. right ? I also have some search for the call /etc/init.d/service
name, but I did find at the moment except freeradius you mentioned in bug
1406105. Do you have any better way to deal with this tricky situation ? thanks.

Bug description:
  [ impact ]

  Previously, init.d scripts that were replaced by upstart jobs had
  upstart-job symlink as a redirect in-place, which directed users at
  using upstart commands. Despite the good intentions, that never
  actually taught people about the correct interfaces. Now with the
  advent of co-installability of multiple init systems, users may have
  systemd, upstart, and sysv-init all installed on users system and have
  init.d scripts / upstart jobs / systemd units all available. To avoid
  any doubt, we should support executing /etc/init.d/ scripts which may
  call into upstart, or into systemd, or actually execute the script in
  question depending on whether there is native configuration for that
  particular job and which init system we are running under.

  [ test case ]

  Invoking init.d script should invoke upstart commands, for example:

  $ /etc/init.d/ssh status
  ssh start/running, process 4620
  $ /etc/init.d/ssh stop
  stop: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type=method_call,
sender=:1.2469694 (uid=1000 pid=3908 comm=stop ssh )
interface=com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job member=Stop error name=(unset)
requested_reply=0 destination=com.ubuntu.Upstart (uid=0 pid=1
comm=/sbin/init)
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh stop
  ssh stop/waiting
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
  ssh start/running, process 5373
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart
  ssh stop/waiting
  ssh start/running, process 5405

  In Ubuntu 13.10, the Upstart job and the init.d script do not work
  properly. In previous versions, the init.d script was a symlink to
  the wrapper script around upstart (/lib/init/upstart-job). This
  conflict means that if the server was started using the init.d script,
  upstart does not recognize that the server is running and will attempt
  to start a second instance of mysqld.

  Also problematic is that if the upstart job is started using the
  service or start commands, the init.d script's stop function runs a
  mysql shutdown, but upstart simply restarts mysqld (because it's
  marked respawn in the upstart config).

  Description: Ubuntu 14.04

  The problem in some setup was that the upgrade von 12.04 to 14.04 requres the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482613] [NEW] Apps with forced landscape orientation display the wrong way on the phone

2015-08-07 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8/+bug/1478637
which is probably the same issue, but for natively landscape orientated
devices.

When an app sets a forced-landscape mode, the phone must be rotated
clockwise from portrait mode to display it properly. This is a more
difficult movement than rotating anti-clockwise for people holding the
phone in their left hand (e.g. most right-handed people).

When an app forces landscape mode, the top of the landscape screen
should be the right of the portait-orientated screen.

  Departments are currently not cleared for Apps (as well as other Scopes) when
navigating away/too a Scope. However, if a user selects a department and then
conducts a search, navigating away/too the scope clears the search AND resets
the department (tested in the Amazon and Ebay Scopes).
  Additionally, opening the department drop-down shows the previously selected
department as still being active/applied.

  Recommendation:
  Apps Scope is a special case where we should clear searches and reset
departments (including within the department drop-dow) when a user navigates
away from the scope.

  All other scopes should preserve both the department and (where
  relevant) filters, but clear searches (which are easily accessible by
  beginning a new search and selecting from the recent search list).

  Expected result:
  You shouldn't be able to select any APs when hotspot is active.

  Actual result:
  The selected AP will trigger a connection attempt ( and succeed if open, or

  Note, one other minor nit is that the hotspot is shown in the network-

Title:
  Access points shouldn't be connectable if a hotspot is enabled

Status in indicator-network package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in indicator-network package in Ubuntu RTM:
  New

Bug description:
  While testing the touch hotspot feature ( currently in silo-046 ) on
  krillin ( stable, #24 ) and arale ( rc-proposed, #58 ), I noticed that
  it's possible to trigger the phone to connect to an AP while the
  hotspot is enabled.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Ensure that WiFi isn't connected to an AP
  2. Enable hotspot
  3. Display the network-menu and select an AP

  Expected result:
  You shouldn't be able to select any APs when hotspot is active.

  Actual result:
  The selected AP will trigger a connection attempt ( and succeed if open, or
secure and secrets have been saved ).

  Note, one other minor nit is that the hotspot is shown in the network-
  menu's list of APs. If this bug is fixed by not showing any APs in
  the menu anymore, then this becomes moot.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking#hotspot: A hotspot requires
  exclusive use of your Wi-Fi connection. Therefore: ... * Whenever
  Hotspot is on, wherever Wi-Fi networks are listed, no networks should
  be shown.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1273462] Re: Users can mistakenly run init.d scripts and cause problems if an equivalent upstart job already exists

2015-08-07 Thread Hua Zhang
** Description changed:

  [ impact ]

  Previously, init.d scripts that were replaced by upstart jobs had
  upstart-job symlink as a redirect in-place, which directed users at
  using upstart commands. Despite the good intentions, that never actually
  taught people about the correct interfaces. Now with the advent of co-
  installability of multiple init systems, users may have systemd,
  upstart, and sysv-init all installed on users system and have init.d
  scripts / upstart jobs / systemd units all available. To avoid any
  doubt, we should support executing /etc/init.d/ scripts which may call
  into upstart, or into systemd, or actually execute the script in
  question depending on whether there is native configuration for that
  particular job and which init system we are running under.

  [ test case ]

  Invoking init.d script should invoke upstart commands, for example:

  $ /etc/init.d/ssh status
  ssh start/running, process 4620
  $ /etc/init.d/ssh stop
  stop: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type=method_call,
sender=:1.2469694 (uid=1000 pid=3908 comm=stop ssh )
interface=com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job member=Stop error name=(unset)
requested_reply=0 destination=com.ubuntu.Upstart (uid=0 pid=1
comm=/sbin/init)
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh stop
  ssh stop/waiting
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
  ssh start/running, process 5373
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart
  ssh stop/waiting
  ssh start/running, process 5405

  In Ubuntu 13.10, the Upstart job and the init.d script do not work
  properly. In previous versions, the init.d script was a symlink to the
  wrapper script around upstart (/lib/init/upstart-job). This conflict
  means that if the server was started using the init.d script, upstart
  does not recognize that the server is running and will attempt to start
  a second instance of mysqld.

  Also problematic is that if the upstart job is started using the service
  or start commands, the init.d script's stop function runs a mysql
  shutdown, but upstart simply restarts mysqld (because it's marked
  respawn in the upstart config).

  Description: Ubuntu 14.04
  Release: 14.04
  mysql:   mysql-server-5.5.43-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
  The problem in some setup was that the upgrade von 12.04 to 14.04 requres the
adjustment of the InnoDB log size. Therefore the start of MySQL via upstart
failed directly while the one via init started successfully and then failed as
below.

  This is horrible. The status commands report the wrong status and the
start/stop commands do not work. If our operators are not super careful, our
orchestration and monitoring system will go wild, report the wrong status
and/or perform continuous restarts of the system as they think the service is
not running. So we also fix it in trusty. the result will looks as below:

@Daniel -- ok your log implies that somehow you do not have busybox-
static installed, which is supprising me somewhat. Could you also
append a dpkg -l listing please.
