[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652491] [NEW] Sync elfutils 0.166-2.2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2016-12-24 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Please sync elfutils 0.166-2.2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Don't run the run-backtrace-native-biarch test.

The test was fixed in -2.2. I confirmed that the package builds
successfully on all normal PPA architectures.

Changelog entries since current zesty version 0.166-2ubuntu1:

elfutils (0.166-2.2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * testsuite-amd64-fix-backtrace-native.patch: Backport upstream
patch to fix FTBFS on amd64 (Closes: #841124)

 -- James Clarke Tue, 18 Oct 2016 08:13:34 +0100

elfutils (0.166-2.1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Build-Depend on gcc-multilib and libc6-dbg on sparc64 (Closes: #832584)

  unity 8 login stalls

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Incomplete
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Contrary to other login problems with Unity 8 (as installed by default
in Ubuntu 16.10), I'm not getting a black screen when trying to log
  in. After entering my password the login screen just sort of hangs;
I'm left with the login GUI (which is frozen) and the top panel (which
I can use) to display the suspend / restart options. I left it running
for quite a while, but nothing happened. I can log in to the default
  environment easily.

I'm running a System 76 Meerkat, having upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 without
wiping my system drive.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1638245] Re: Files in the root of a folder on another partition symlinked to user's home cannot be moved to trash because of a patch in this package

2016-12-24 Thread Svivi
Hi,

Does anybody know when will be the updated glib2.0 included in
xenial(-proposed)?

Thanks in advance!

Title:
Files in the root of a folder on another partition symlinked to user's
home cannot be moved to trash because of a patch in this package

Status in glib2.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in glib2.0 source package in Xenial:
  Confirmed
Status in glib2.0 source package in Yakkety:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

Can't trash files if the directory they are in is a symlink to another
  device

  [ QA ]

  Steps:
  1. Install system and partition disk into root and data partitions
  2. create ~/Data folder, and mount data partition on it
  3. create symlinks for ~/whatever/ to ~/Data/something/
  4. delete files directly inside ~/whatever/

  What happen:
Then Nautilus says: "File can't be put in the trash. Do you want to delete it
immediately?".

  What should happen:
  The files moved into Trash.

  [ Regression potential ]

The proposed fix uses g_stat instead of g_stat to follow symlinks, so
we know where to place the trash (you can't rename() across
filesystems). If that is wrong, then it could regress trashing other
  kinds of files.

  [ Original ]

  I'm on Ubuntu 16.10 64-bit with libglib2.0-0 version 2.50.0-1.

I've reported this bug (or marked as "it affects me") in a couple of
other places before I've finally discovered that this is the package
that's causing this problem, which unfortunately has been around for a
  couple of years now.

This bug has been reported upstream as well, but it's just taking very
very long to arrive at a decision and take action it seems.

  Apparently one of the patches
  (https://sources.debian.net/patches/glib2.0/2.50.1-1/0001-Fix-
  trashing-on-overlayfs.patch/) which is here

to the original package which is here

is the root cause of this annoying problem.

As I prefer keeping one patition for the root filesystem (/), one
partition for user settings (/home) and one partition for user data
(Documents, Downloads, Drive, Music, Pictures, Public, Videos) which
are simply symlinked to my home folder for ease of use, I cannot move
any file to the trash in the root of these folders when I access them
from my home folder or nautilus sidebar.

This problem doesn't affect folders at all, nor any other files in
  subfolders, etc.

So I was wondering if Ubuntu devs can leave out that particular patch
when building this package for Ubuntu - if it doesn't cause more harm,
  which I doubt.

Otherwise, I would appreciate if I could learn how to do it myself:
how can I (as an end-user) compile the contents of
"glib2.0_2.50.0.orig.tar.xz" with all the patches, etc. in
  "glib2.0_2.50.0-1.debian.tar.xz" except "0001-Fix-trashing-on-
  overlayfs.patch"?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1574120] Re: Notebook doesn't suspend when lid is closed after update to 16.04

2016-12-24 Thread Mark Leigh
I should add, one inhibitor listed was multiple displays, but I don't
have that, nor have I attached any additional displays since the clean
install of 16.04.

I tested the workaround suggest above (HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend)
and it (sort of) works. It takes 12-14 seconds after closing the lid
before suspend starts. However, it also makes the system unstable. It
now locks up during boot sometimes, and sometimes crashes and reboots
during suspend.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652469] [NEW] Boot partition too small, apt-get upgrade fails

2016-12-24 Thread Harald Rudell
Public bug reported:

PROBLEM:
On install, the boot partition has the size 244.0 MiB or 499,712 sectors

SYMPTOM:
This causes apt-get upgrade to fail at a later time with messages like:

apt-get --yes dist-upgrade
…
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-57-generic
gzip: stdout: No space left on device
E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 gzip 1
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-57-generic with 1.
run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools exited with return code 1
dpkg: error processing package linux-image-extra-4.4.0-57-generic (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic:
 linux-image-generic depends on linux-image-extra-4.4.0-57-generic; however:
Package linux-image-extra-4.4.0-57-generic is not configured yet.
…
Errors were encountered while processing:
 linux-image-extra-4.4.0-57-generic
 linux-image-generic
 linux-generic
 linux-signed-image-generic
 linux-signed-generic
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
- status code: 100

FIX:
usually want multiple of 2,048 sectors / 1 MiB
One kernel revision is 56 MiB
Miscellaneous files is 28 MiB
File system overhead is 11 MiB
Typically there are 3 kernels: is the running, the latest and the second to
latest
56 * 3 + 28 = 196 MiB
A system upgrade requires 120 MiB free
So /boot should be at least 196 + 11 + 120 = 327 MiB in 1 MiB increments
A power of 2 would be 512 MiB or 1,048,576 sectors

** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1651575] Re: goa-daemon starts broken

2016-12-24 Thread Richard
It appear to not be the same as those two bugs, although the getaround
is the same: restart the daemon

In this case, evolution is attempting to authenticate against a locally
hosted plain password login wrapped in https (off-the-mill php)

Evolution does not offer to store the credentials somewhere, it accepts
them and the next time you start evolution, it says authentication
failed. I could not authenticate until I realized goa-daemon needs a
restart. I had no idea there was a goa-daemon before it broke.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2016-12-24 Thread Jarno Suni
"a more helpful error" that the title of this bug report calls for would
not free you from the need to remove kernels manually.

I made a script called linux-purge to make it easy to remove extra
kernels even in tricky conditions:
https://www.bountysource.com/issues/38300038-feature-request-the-
command-should-work-like-this (It is designed to handle dependency
problems and even problem running out of inodes - that may occur when
installing a kernel - when using --fix option.)

As for preventing system from getting full of kernels automatically,
unattended-upgrades provides an adequate solution for most cases. You can
configure it in Ubuntu 16.04 like this:
Add line

Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "true";

in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades

(since unattended-upgrades is enabled by default in 16.04; the
configuration acts as if running "apt-get autoremove" periodically.)

The default setting in 16.04 is

Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-New-Unused-Dependencies "true";

but that does not work in some cases (Bug #1624644); the former setting
overrides it.

Alternatively, putting "linux-purge --yes --keep 1" as a cron job or alike
could do automatic kernel purging, (if no other process has locked dpkg at the
time of calling it).
It has some differences to the unattended-upgrades way:
- It works in 12.04 and 14.04, too. (unattended-upgrades cannot remove manually
installed kernels that will be around, if user installs kernel using e.g.
update-manager; Bug #1439769.)
- The number of kernels to keep is configurable. It keeps the given number of
nearest older kernels of each installed kernel update series, e.g.
linux-generic and linux-generic-lts-xenial, not necessarily the installed
kernels with greatest versions. (You could use --auto-only to keep
manually installed kernels, too, but you probably would not want to use it in
12.04 and 14.04.)
- Current kernel will never be removed. (Bug #1615381)
- It removes configuration files, too. (i.e. it purges)
- It only removes versioned kernel packages whose name start by linux-.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652381] Re: systematic way to refresh the random-seed again and again

2016-12-24 Thread John Denker
Here's an even simpler argument why random-seed-load and random-seed-save should
be seen as two separate stateless services, not as the "start" and "stop" of
some
single long-lived service.

Suppose that during boot-up, random-seed-load fails for some reason. There are
definitely ways this could happen. (OTOH there are a surprising number of
things
that could go wrong that systemd-random-seed save does /not/ report as an error
... but that is a topic for another day.)

Now suppose that in the minutes, hours, or days that follow, the problem is
resolved.
Desired behavior: We really want the 'save' service to be performed at
shutdown.

The currently-observed behavior is that if 'load' failed then 'save' will never
be
performed. This is a Bad Thing from the security point of view.

Splitting the services as discussed above makes this issue (among
others) go away.

Title:
systematic way to refresh the random-seed again and again

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Background and rationale: There ought to be a nice systematic way to
refresh the random-seed again and again, while the system is running
normally, not just at boot time or at shutdown time.

Sometimes a system may crash without carrying out an orderly shutdown.
Indeed some systems never carry out an orderly shutdown; they run
until they die. Therefore all the reasons why it is important to
refresh the random-seed during shutdown are also good reasons for
refreshing it from time to time during normal operations ... not just
  at startup.

Desired behavior: The logical, systematic, traditional, and expected
way to refresh the seed would be either "systemctl start systemd-
random-seed" or equivalently "/etc/init.d/urandom start". The command
should happily run as many times as desired, and should refresh the
  random-seed each time.

Observed behavior: "systemctl start systemd-random-seed" doesn't have
the desired effect. Apparently systemd considers the previous
instance of systemd-random-seed.service to be still active, so
additional starts don't do any good. Furthermore,
"/etc/init.d/urandom start" has been re-implemented in terms of
"systemctl start systemd-random-seed", so that doesn't work either.

This is a significant regression relative to the pre-systemd behavior.

Constructive suggestion. See attached patch. Recipe:
   :; systemctl start systemd-random-seed
-- Observe that /var/lib/systemd/random-seed does not get refreshed.
   :; systemctl stop systemd-random-seed
   -- Apply the patch.
   :; systemctl daemon-reload
   :; systemctl start systemd-random-seed
   :; sleep 60
   :; systemctl start systemd-random-seed
-- observe that the seed now does get refreshed.

There may be other ways of dealing with the issue, but this seems nice
  and simple.

Tangent: In a non-essential way, this might touch on decisions about
  how best to address https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1651947

Digression: There is a policy question as to how often to refresh the
seed during normal operations. That is a question for another day.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652466] [NEW] [Xenial] mesa-va-drivers should be as alternative to Depends of va-driver-all, otherwise, Totem can't play videos if gstreamer1.0-vaapi is installed on Gallium gra

2016-12-24 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Public bug reported:

What is the problem:
Totem can't play videos if gstreamer1.0-vaapi is installed on Gallium graphics
in Xenial because mesa-va-drivers is not installed as a dependency of
va-driver-all.

Here is the dependency chain in Xenial:
gstreamer1.0-vaapi Depends on libva1
libva1 Recommends va-driver-all
va-driver-all Depends on i965-va-driver vdpau-va-driver (no mesa-va-drivers!)

Here is the terminal output of Totem (with gstreamer1.0-vaapi installed and no
mesa-va-drivers):
:~$ totem
Stream with high frequencies VQ coding
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0

libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0

When mesa-va-drivers is installed, Totem plays videos just fine.

This is fixed in version 1.7.0-2 in Debian and Yakkety.

Title:
pulseaudio crashes when connecting to bluetooth headphones (due to
  ubuntu changes?)

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in pulseaudio source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released
Status in pulseaudio source package in Yakkety:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Impact:

A patch we carry for Ubuntu touch introduced a change that originally
was required to make sure PulseAudio did not crash. This patch was
ported to PulseAudio 8 in Xenial, but the patch author's bluetooth
hardware that was to hand at the time worked so was assumed to be ok.
However, the opposite is now happening, i.e PulseAudio is crashing
with a subset of Bluetooth hardware.

  Regression potential:

Very low to none. As can be read in this report, much debugging and
testing has been done to find the problem, and the eventual fix.
Moreover the change is the removal of a patch hunk that removed a line
of code originally present in PulseAudio.

  Test case:

NOTE that this test case applies to bluetooth hardware that is
identified as not working in this bug report.

  1. Install, or upgrade to Xenial or yakkety.
  2. Pair your bluetooth device in the bluetooth settings in the relevant
settings application for your desktop environment.
  3. Once paired, you will notice that sound stops working, as pulseaudio has
thrown an assertion error.
  4. You do not have to remove your audio device from the paired device list,
but it may be easier to do so for the next part of the testing.
  5. Update to the version of PulseAudio in xenial-proposed which is
1:8.0-0ubuntu3.1, or in yakkety-proposed, which is 1:9.0-2ubuntu2.1.
  6. Re-pair your device. Audio should continue to work, and you should be able
to switch to your bluetooth device and use it.

  Original bug report:

When I attempt to connect my Jaybird Bluebuds X to Ubuntu 16.04
pulseaudio crashes, this does *NOT* happen with a Jambox which leads
me to believe it's an intermittent problem with some hardware. This
did not happen on Ubuntu 15.10 (which was an upgrade of 15.04).

occasionally the screen will darken and just do nothing for a while..
then lighten up and everything is fine. Also, occasionally the screen

shutdown window appears, I cancel it and usually screen returns to

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652381] Re: systematic way to refresh the random-seed again and again

2016-12-24 Thread John Denker
OK, I implemented approach (2) from the previous comment.
The work consists of six steps, in two groups of three:

++ create system/systemd-random-seed-load.service
++ create system/systemd-random-seed-save.service
-- get rid of the old system/systemd-random-seed.service

++ create system/sysinit.target.wants/systemd-random-seed-load.service
++ create system/shutdown.target.wants/systemd-random-seed-save.service
-- get rid of the old system/sysinit.target.wants/systemd-random-seed.service

The two new .service files are simple and straightforward. See attached
patch.

I retract my previous speculation about reimplementing the old
systemd-random-seed.service because AFAICT it was only invoked from
sysinit.target ... and anybody else who tried it almost certainly wasn't
getting acceptable results.

We must drop the whole idea of a systemd-random-seed "service" with an active
state bookended by a single start-event and a single stop-event. That might
have seemed elegant at first glance, but it did not capture the right semantics.
It did not meet the security needs.

Implementing two separate one-shot services does what is needed. It is
close to the longstanding init.d/urandom behavior.

** Patch added: "two separate one-shot random-seed services"

Title:
systematic way to refresh the random-seed again and again

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652449] [NEW] dnsmasq requires restart randomly now and then in order to access random URLs

2016-12-24 Thread Sadi Yumuşak
Public bug reported:

I use dnsmasq along with a long list of domains blocked in order to
prevent spyware, malware, etc. on my personal computer.

I've begun having frequent DNS problems after upgrading my Ubuntu (64
bit) system from 16.04 to 16.10.

>From time to time a random URL address suddenly becomes unreachable with
varying error messages, most common one that I remember is some sort of
a DNS ERROR.

I've found that the only remedy is this "sudo /etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart".
After that, the problem disappears - for some time.

Such URL addresses cannot be accessed system-wide until dnsmasq service
is restarted, but they can be accessed via Tor Browser only, which
bypasses dnsmasq I guess.

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After a suspend/resume cycle, the screen comes up normally, but every
time I move my mouse over a piece of text, button, widget, etc, the

xfce-panel vanishes, although it's still responding to mouse-clicks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1652443] [NEW] Wrong time format of html elements

I experience this mistake since the appearance of video control changed (to
white-blue colors).

minutes. If a time value is heigher than 59 minutes, it not show - for example
- 02:20:13 (2-hour 20-minutes 13-secs), BUT it show 140:13. OOps..
I experience this mistake since the appearance of video control changed (to
white-blue colors).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1434351] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-12-24 Thread Kai Blin
It looks like for me the workaround from comment #5 causes even more
immediate rendering issues. E.g. terminal windows being overlapped by
elements from another window below. Now trying the workaround from
comment #7.

X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After a suspend/resume cycle, the screen comes up normally, but every
time I move my mouse over a piece of text, button, widget, etc, the
text vanishes and it's replaced by a plain rectangle.

This does not affect xterm, but it does affect any GTK apps, firefox,
  etc.

xfce-panel vanishes, although it's still responding to mouse-clicks.
Newly opened menus are grey rectangles.

The lines underlining menu hotkeys do NOT disappear.

In the attached screenshot, you can clearly see which buttons I have
waved the mouse over, and which I have not.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1434351] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-12-24 Thread Kai Blin
I managed to get through the unreadable pop-ups by clicking on random
buttons until it worked. Please note that the xorg.conf reported above
is one I just added to try the workaround mentioned in comment #5, I did
not have any xorg.conf set up at the time the bug appeared. I just
thought I'd give reporting the error another try before rebooting to get
a useable system back.

Title:

This still happens. Unfortunately, calling `apport-collect -p xorg
1434351` fails with a popup that is unreadable because fonts are not
rendering, so I have no idea what it is complaining about.

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired => Confirmed

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu
