[Touch-packages] [Bug 1658921] Re: NetworkManager does not manage wired connection

2017-04-08 Thread Danny B
Just had this happen after an ordinary desktop upgrade from 16.04 to
16.10, had to do the touch thing, because 10-globally-managed-
devices.conf was missing.

For the default user-friendly desktop linux distro option, Ubuntu seems
pretty bad at this just working out of the box thing. I've had less
random bugs during my several years with Gentoo, and I didn't ditch it
so I could waste more of my time installing obscure kernel patches and
having to configure things I don't care about.

Title:
NetworkManager does not manage wired connection

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
NetworkManager does not manage my wired eth0 connection, no matter how
  I set /etc/network/interfaces or
  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

Using ubuntu 16.04, /etc/network/interfaces only managed lo, and
[ifupdown] section of NetworkManager.conf had set managed=false.

With these same settings, after upgrading to ubuntu 16.10, eth0
  appears as unmanaged in nm-applet.

If I modify /etc/network/interfaces and add

  auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet dhcp

And set managed=true in NetworkManager.conf [ifupdown] section, eth0
is still unmanaged despite it does get an IP from DHCP server.

This is happening in my five computers (two laptops and three
  desktops).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1679968] Re: Neither wireless nor wired connections after updating core from 4.4.0-71 to 4.4.0-72

2017-04-08 Thread karu
After some days of working under the old core and installing updates
that followed thereon everything's returned to normal work.

But I still do not know what it was!

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
After updating the core to 4.4.0-72, suggested by Software Update Manager,
Network Manager does not see Wi-Fi.
Initially when Ubuntu is loaded the sign of Network Manager does not appear
in tray. Wireless button flashes orange instead of white and doesn't react on
pressing. When I'm trying to open Network Manager through System Settings it
flashes a notification that some connections are not suitable for this version.
When closing the notification the only thing manager shows is proxy settings
and the only thing it suggests for adding is VPN. Not any word about wireless
or wired connections at all!
As for Apport it's still keeping silence. Drivers remained the same.
As I checked there are no any kind of block for the connections (neither soft
nor hard). When I boot with core 4.4.0-71 everything works perfectly as it did
until updating.

Please ask me and possibly guide me if solution needs more
  information, logs, etc.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1681138] Re: silent file corruption with cp -ar file transfers to USB

2017-04-08 Thread Nathan
>What's the nature of the corruption

Its unclear, file attributes, names, size all appear the same from ls output.
I initially discovered it while setting up a local repo, dpkg didn't recognize
the deb file output.
Diff throws IO errors.
Copying with cp appears to work (failing silently)
dd & rsync both throw an input output error when attempting to copy affected
files.
lsof of the affected files directly after a copy throws an unable to stat (I'm
not too versed with lsof so that may be a common problem unrelated).

>How do you mean "flush of the write buffer"?

I used hdparm -f on the device node after unmounting it, I then used
eject before physically removing it.

>3 Seconds sounds way too short -
My thoughts exactly, the copy was over a usb 2.0 root hub so I would expect no
more than 30MB/sec.

The issue only appears for this specific USB Drive I've tested 5 other
usb thumbdrive models with no issue.

I've linked the exact model below.

I'm seeing silent file corruption when using the cp -ar switches for
file transfers to a Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB thumb drive across a
  USB 2.0 bus.

The first indication of a problem is when attempting to read the data
at some point in time after the initial copy.

The copy command completes successfully with no visible errors.

At first I thought this may have been related to an async write,
however; the issue persists after a flush of the write buffer prior to
ejection of the device, and there are no issues with DD.

As a test, a 2.5G file was generated with random data and then copied
with cp -ar to and from the device. The copy completes with no visible
  errors within 3 seconds.

I've included the strace log of the transfer in action as an
  attachment.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1681138] Re: silent file corruption with cp -ar file transfers to USB

2017-04-08 Thread Pádraig Brady
What's the nature of the corruption? For example is there too little data?
How do you mean "flush of the write buffer"?
3 seconds sounds way too short to actually write the data.
I presume you're unmounting the device before ejecting it?
Note cp is just doing read/write so unlikely to be the issue.
Note also cp reads/writes 128KiB at a time,
whereas dd defaults to only 512B at a time and so may avoid async issues.

Bug description:
  Hello,
I think this is a bug in the WIFI-driver or kernel.
Ubuntu is connected to the WIFI (router) box, but it cannot find DNS server
to get to the internet.

I have periodically *serious* problems with WIFI in Ubuntu 17.04.
The network icon shows "connected" to the router and internet, but browsers
and other attempts to get data report DNS error / or not connected.

This happens in all flavours of Ubuntu 17.04 (Ubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME
  etc.).

Same laptop with Ubuntu 16.10 works flawlessly.

The connection works fine after I reboot (power off/on) the router box.
Then the bug may return (or may not return) after I turn on my laptop next

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1270579] Re: On laptops, screen brightness and keyboard backlight isn't memorized between sessions

2017-04-08 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
I guess brightness in 'acpi_video1' works but not 'acpi_video0'?

If that's the case, we may need to modify userspace program policy to
make it work.

Bug description:
  HOW TO REPRODUCE:
    1. Boot a laptop.
    2. Set a different screen (or keyboard) backlight brightness level.
    3. Reboot.

  RESULT:
    Backlight is not memorized.

  FIX:
    A. For Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 14.04 LTS install my package from PPA
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nrbrtx/sysvinit-backlight
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install sysvinit-backlight

  NOTES:
  1. If you have installed previous non-deb version, please remove it
carefully manually
    sudo rm /etc/rc?.d/?25backlight /etc/init.d/brightness
/etc/rc?.d/?25brightness
      2. If you have installed previous version from my PPA on Ubuntu 14.04
LTS, please reinstall the package by:
    sudo apt-get purge sysvinit-backlight
    sudo apt-get install sysvinit-backlight
  3. Version 0.1ubuntu1 supports save/restore of keyboard backlight too.

    B. Ubuntu 14.10 is at EOL (from July 2015), Ubuntu 15.04 is at EOL (from
January 2016), Ubuntu 15.10 is near EOL (really at July 2016), so users should
upgrade them to Ubuntu 16.04 (see C below).
My script is incompatible with these Ubuntu versions - remove it with
    sudo apt-get purge sysvinit-backlight
    sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:nrbrtx/sysvinit-backlight

    C. Ubuntu 15.04, 15.10 and 16.04 LTS have systemd-backlight@.service. It
saves and restores screen and keyboard backlight levels.
My script is incompatible with these Ubuntu versions.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * A previous update made AppStream use modern-style component-ids, thereby
breaking the Qt library if it is reading data from the cache and if that data
happens to be a desktop-application.
   * This leads to KDE's Discover not displaying applications.
   * The issue was introduced by a patch to the Xenial version of AppStream,
and is not present in any other version of the package in Ubuntu, affecting
Xenial only.

  [Test Case 1]

   * Update the libappstream-qt package, run Discover: All apps should
  be loaded correctly.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Low, this change affects only the Qt bindings and nothing else. The
change is also a simple string value change.

Every time I tried the live Kubuntu 16.04 image on a Lenovo t420 laptop it
requires to enter the wifi password twice before I can use the wifi. Once from
the network icon panel, then second time a prompt on the desktop to enter the

I do not know if this is typical behavior of Kubuntu since I usually use GTK
base desktops.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1681138] [NEW] silent file corruption with cp -ar file transfers to USB

2017-04-08 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

The OS is 16.10 Yakkety LiveCD.

I'm seeing silent file corruption when using the cp -ar switches for
file transfers to a Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB thumb drive across a USB
2.0 bus.

The first indication of a problem is when attempting to read the data at
some point in time after the initial copy.

I've included the strace log of the transfer in action as an attachment.

** Affects: coreutils (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "strace"

Bug description:
I ran debsums and I got the following output:

It is reporting that the /usr/share/doc/module-init-
tools/changelog.Debian.gz file changed. The issue is that I do not
think I changed it, or nobody changed it, so there is an issue here.
Moreover, if I reinstall the module-init-tools package (apt-get
install --reinstall module-init-tools) then after few days the change
  reappears.

Support running X as an unprivileged user.

Currently X servers are run as root means a large complex process has
access to services it might not need (i.e. potential security and
stability problems). It would be nice to run each X server as either
an unprivileged user or in the session they are being used in.

Logind provides a system for sharing access to the display and input
devices so this can be done - this seems like the most likely
  implementation of non-root X.

Public bug reported:

The /etc/cron.daily/locate script runs as wrong user. In the package the

if the "updatedb" script runs as nobody a lot of files can't be indexed
because nobody hasn't the right to view all system files.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1270579] Re: On laptops, screen brightness and keyboard backlight isn't memorized between sessions

2017-04-08 Thread aljosa
Hello,
inside "/sys/class/backlight/" I have two folders: "acpi_video0" and
"acpi_video1":

~$ systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service
● systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service - Load/Save Screen Backlight B
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/systemd-backlight@.service; static; vendo
Active: active (exited) since Sat 2017-04-08 13:37:31 CEST; 16min ago
 Docs: man:systemd-backlight@.service(8)
 Main PID: 683 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)

~$ systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video1.service
● systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video1.service - Load/Save Screen Backlight B
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/systemd-backlight@.service; static; vendo
Active: active (exited) since Sat 2017-04-08 13:37:31 CEST; 22min ago
 Docs: man:systemd-backlight@.service(8)
 Main PID: 684 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)

Today I received many Ubuntu updates (kernel included), and I also installed
freshly released Nvidia 381.09 driver (via “Graphics Drivers” team -
Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA).
Now brightness settings are correctly saved, but I have a new problem: changing
brightness level doesn't produce any effect (both with or without Nvidia driver
installed).

  HOW TO REPRODUCE:
    1. Boot a laptop.
    2. Set a different screen (or keyboard) backlight brightness level.
    3. Reboot.

  RESULT:
    Backlight is not memorized.

  FIX:
    A. For Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 14.04 LTS install my package from PPA
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nrbrtx/sysvinit-backlight
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install sysvinit-backlight

  NOTES:
  1. If you have installed previous non-deb version, please remove it
carefully manually
    sudo rm /etc/rc?.d/?25backlight /etc/init.d/brightness
/etc/rc?.d/?25brightness
      2. If you have installed previous version from my PPA on Ubuntu 14.04
LTS, please reinstall the package by:
    sudo apt-get purge sysvinit-backlight
    sudo apt-get install sysvinit-backlight
  3. Version 0.1ubuntu1 supports save/restore of keyboard backlight too.

    B. Ubuntu 14.10 is at EOL (from July 2015), Ubuntu 15.04 is at EOL (from
January 2016), Ubuntu 15.10 is near EOL (really at July 2016), so users should
upgrade them to Ubuntu 16.04 (see C below).
My script is incompatible with these Ubuntu versions - remove it with
    sudo apt-get purge sysvinit-backlight
    sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:nrbrtx/sysvinit-backlight

    C. Ubuntu 15.04, 15.10 and 16.04 LTS have systemd-backlight@.service. It
saves and restores screen and keyboard backlight levels.
My script is incompatible with these Ubuntu versions.

this is not a help desk but a bug tracking tool, and you have not
explained what the bug is?

and why do people (not just you) keep reporting random bugs against xorg
anyway?

on the virtual local server

Title:
DNS loop, >5,000 queries per second for minutes at a time

Status in dnsmasq package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Since upgrading a desktop to 17.04, several times a day a DNS storm
occurs. The same A or record is requested over and over again.
The storm lasts 10 to 15 minutes and can clog name resolution
entirely, making the computer unusable for that time.

Both Firefox and Transmission originated hostnames have appeared in
the storms, so it does not seem like an individual application is
  causing the problem.

There are so many requests that running tcpdump on a random port (port
29381 is used below) soon catches part of the storm. Example output
below. Note that throughout the duration of these captures, identical
DNS requests were being sent from pretty much every other port as
  well.

= Transmission looking up mgtracker.org, got stuck on this single hostname
for =
= about 15 minutes (this is just the tail end of yesterday morning's storm).

Title:
Request to add wireguard interface to interface-order

Status in resolvconf package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  This started from https://github.com/jlund/streisand/issues/557. Basically
wg* namespace is not in interface-order and acts last in * scope, and this
makes resolv.conf to stay in the same state.
  I suggest the following change:
  :/etc/resolvconf/interface-order
  # interface-order(5)
  lo.inet6
  lo.inet
  lo.@(dnsmasq|pdnsd)
  lo.!(pdns|pdns-recursor)
  lo
  +wg*
  tun*
  tap*
  hso*
  em+([0-9])?(_+([0-9]))*
  p+([0-9])p+([0-9])?(_+([0-9]))*
  @(br|eth)*([^.]).inet6
  @(br|eth)*([^.]).ip6.@(dhclient|dhcpcd|pump|udhcpc)
  @(br|eth)*([^.]).inet
  @(br|eth)*([^.]).@(dhclient|dhcpcd|pump|udhcpc)
  @(br|eth)*
  @(ath|wifi|wlan)*([^.]).inet6
  @(ath|wifi|wlan)*([^.]).ip6.@(dhclient|dhcpcd|pump|udhcpc)
  @(ath|wifi|wlan)*([^.]).inet
  @(ath|wifi|wlan)*([^.]).@(dhclient|dhcpcd|pump|udhcpc)
  @(ath|wifi|wlan)*
  ppp*

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1681044] [NEW] User's wallpaper not (always) displayed on login screen

2017-04-08 Thread Emmanuel
Public bug reported:

Hi all,
Here is the environnement :
I mount home directory from a NAS. They are mounted as CIFS.
I changed lightdm init script in order to be sure that user's home are mounted
before lightdm is started (otherwise things are bad.. very bad).

and the problem i'm facing :

I choose a wallpaper (on the ubuntu set).
I quit my session.
The wallpaper is display when i'm on the user name.
--> This is perfect.
After a while (i use the computer normaly, power on/off, login/logout, ...),
lightdm do not display wallpaper for some users but other are ok.
If i continue to use my computer at last, no wallpaper are displayed by lightdm
on login screen.
If i set again the wallpaper, everything is back to normal for the user i set.

So, why are the user's wallpaper not display every times by lightdm ?

Please ask for information (with commandline to retrive them), i'll sent
it to help solve that pb.
