In a freshly booted and fully updated Ubuntu 16.10 the edit window of

The text of loaded files shows against the desktop wallpaper but when
no files are loaded gedit displays its edit window or pane as it

To clarify this bug is only apparent when a file is loaded.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708563] [NEW] apport fails to inform when not sending report

2017-08-03 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

For quite some time now, I have experienced apport popup windows
reporting certain crashes. When I click to submit a report, the popup
window disappears and nothing further happens.

In the past, when closing the popup window, I used to see a new
Launchpad bug report where I could enter further details about what was
happening, or check that the bug had already been reported by others.

However that feature seems to have been disabled or become broken some
time ago.

If apport is going to silently ignore my request to report my bug, or is
reporting it somehow without feedback me, then either of these is poor
design, since there has been no feedback to me as the user about what is
happening.

Can I suggest that apport be changed to inform the user of whether or
not the crash report will be uploaded, and whether or not the user will
be redirected to give extra details? Then, if the firefox window fails
to popup, I can report a separate bug about that if needed.

** Affects: apport (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708409] Re: kdump service does not start after configure/reboot

2017-08-03 Thread Steve Langasek
The referenced upstream bug report shows that upstream agrees this is a
regression in systemd behavior which they are planning to correct, which
is reasonable.

However, I think this is also a bug in the kdump-tools package.
'default.target' is a meta-target, which no package can know whether
it's appropriate to start its service under without knowing what
default.target is set to. In particular, kdump-tools also declares
'Wants=network-online.target'. If default.target (either on the kernel
commandline or on the filesystem) is pointed to some sort of local-only
rescue target, having network-online pulled into this target via kdump-
tools could break the boot.

I think kdump-tools in Debian and Ubuntu should instead be integrating
with multi-user.target.

Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

Status in initramfs-tools:

Status in dpkg package in Ubuntu:

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  System calls /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools when
  purging/removing a linux-image-extra package. That calls "update-
initramfs -c" which needs significant amount of additional disk space
in /boot temporarily. But there is no space left, if /boot is full.

  Likewise /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms may call "update-initramfs -u".

The fix could be to create the new initrg.img file in different partition
before replacing the old one by it in update-initramfs. So the update-initramfs
script should be fixed. But there may not be such a partition..
Anyway the likely case when space runs out is when there is a separate /boot
partition.

Alternatively the init scripts should remove the respective
/boot/initrd.img- file when removing/installing the linux-image-extra
package. That could also be done by
  update-initramfs -d -k
That may be worse way, as then initrd.img file is missing for longer period
of time and system integrity may suffer in case of e.g. power cut.

  Related question: http://askubuntu.com/q/898499/21005
The output of 'dpkg --purge' presented there shows that corresponding
linux-image package may get successfully removed while the linux-image-extra is
left broken. If the linux-image-extra package will be removed later, the
post-installation script will create an initrd.img file for a non-installed
kernel! Same would happen, if removing would be done by apt-get purge.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708556] [NEW] Restart from within GUI gets stuck sometimes

2017-08-03 Thread jerriy
Public bug reported:

And this happens some of the time, not all the time.

It seemingly gets stuck at random points of the process too (sometimes
it gets stuck while shutting down - other times it gets stuck after boot

[Touch-packages] [Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error message when there isn't enough free space

2017-08-03 Thread Jarno Suni
I think the patch presented at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/1678187/comments/8
might give more helpful error message, since it avoids filling /boot as long as
possible, thus the system is unlikely to run out of space while running
mkinitramfs, but finds out, if the system lacks free space, and if it does, it
tells the URL of the documentation page concerning removing old kernels.

P.S. The URL could be https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LowDiskOnBoot
alternatively. (Luke W Faraone uses that in his merge proposal, and it
redirects to the same document currently.)

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Bug description:
One notices *.old-dkms files being left behind still sitting on the
disk after purging the related kernel. This can cause /boot to become
full, and when it gets really bad, even sudo apt-get autoremove won't
fix the problem - only deleting the old-dkms files manually solves the
  problem.

Note: Filling up the /boot partition causes updates to fail.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708166] Re: systemd/udev does not rename network interfaces specified in .link files

2017-08-03 Thread Wladimir Mutel
steps 1) and 2) really helped me to make this work

now I am wondering where in the Ubuntu documentation I could find about
this ?

I see similar questions on the Internet, with most responses like
'revert to the old way of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules',
'disable net.ifnames', 'link /dev/null into /etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-
setup-link.rules', etc.

Only here on Launchpad I was able to get the proper and working response from
you
How did you learn about doing this right ? :>

  $ cat /etc/systemd/network/eth0.link
  [Match]
  MACAddress=d0:50:99:76:a1:bf

I am pretty sure that MAC addresses do match
  And I don't change net.ifnames to 0 :

  $ cat /proc/cmdline
  BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-87-generic.efi.signed
root=/dev/mapper/vg_smart-root_smart ro

  then :

  $ sudo udevadm test-builtin net_setup_link /sys/class/net/enp2s0

  ID_NET_LINK_FILE=/lib/systemd/network/99-default.link
  Unload module index
  Unloaded link configuration context.

(and, surely, the interface is renamed from eth0 to enp2s0 on boot,
  but not renamed back afterwards)

can you please tell where I could be wrong ?

on my existing systems I still keep MAC->ifname relations in
  /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules inherited from past Ubuntu
versions. But this is a new setup of Ubuntu 16.04 and I would like to
configure it in the new & recommended way.

thanks in advance for your replies

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-08-03 Thread dlotton
Just did a fresh install of Mint Mate 18.2 onto a new machine. Same
problem exists. While connected to VPN DNS queries are leaking to non-
VPN interface.

This needs to be fixed!

I use my company's cisco vpn via network-manager in Ubuntu 16.04.2

  1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 to version 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 DNS
resolution of VPN's server hostnames does not work. Roll back to
  version 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 solves the problem.

  Steps for reproducing:
  1. upgrade network-manager:amd64 from version 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 to
version 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
  2. connect to VPN via network-manager applet
  3. nslookop servername.internal --> ** server can't find servername.internal:
NXDOMAIN
  4. disconnect from VPN via network-manager applet
  5. roll back network-manager via command: sudo apt-get install
network-manager=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
  6. restart network-manager via sudo service network-manager restart
  7. connect to VPN via network-manager applet
  8. nslookop servername.internal --> the server is resolved correctly

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1707880] Re: newly installed additional units are not started on upgrade

Or as per adam. If the deb-systemd-invoke tracks magic state at install
time, and knows which units are brand new, it should do start on those,
and retry-start on the known updated units.

  This reduces to:
  deb-systemd-invoke try-restart apt-daily-upgrade.timer apt-daily.timer
>/dev/null || true

which is (after calling/checking policy-rc.d) is:
  systemctl try-restart apt-daily-upgrade.timer apt-daily.timer >/dev/null ||
true

This is correct, for the apt-daily.timer and does nothing for the apt-
daily-upgrade.timer. Since apt-daily-upgrade.timer is not active, try-
  restart does not start it.

Imho, there should be an extra snippet in apt.postinst which does
  this:

  if [ -d /run/systemd/system ]; then
if dpkg --compare $2 with version that introduces
apt-daily-upgrade.timer; then
deb-systemd-invoke start apt-daily-upgrade.timer >/dev/null ||

Bug description:
aptdaemon is abandoned and unmaintained. It has already been dropped
from Debian, but there are several reverse dependencies keeping it in
Ubuntu. I will add bug tasks for each of those dependencies, which
should be ported or dropped themselves. Then we can get rid of
  aptdaemon too.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-08-03 Thread Kevin Ard
again, confirming: `sudo apt-get remove --purge dbus-user-session` and
reboot resolved it for me on Ubuntu 16.04. No side-effects. On reboot,
the Passwords>Login keyring was available, where before it wasn't.

  3) Login. gnome-keyring unlocks "login" features including for google chrome
  4) gnome-keyring is not unlocked, chrome takes 2 minutes to open and with no
secure password features(sync) functioning.

For the past couple days, chrome on Ubuntu 16.04 takes a REALLY long
time (maybe 2 minutes) to start. Once chrome is started, I am not able
to sync and any secure password features are broken. I found out this
is due to gnome-keyring not being unlocked at login. There's also no
way to unlock the "login" portion of the keyring from the running
daemon by default. I have to kill the gnome-keyring process and start
without "--login" as a parameter. Then the "login" section shows up
which I'm able to unlock. From there chrome starts up instantly but
  asks the following:

Enter password to unlock your login keyring
The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer

After that, all of it's sync and secure features are functional.

Starting google-chrome-stable from a command line at boot without
running the above workaround shows the following error messages:

Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1676912] Re: Kernel 4.9+ regression: Suspend - Freezing of tasks failed

Bug description:
Recently I replaced Ubuntu 16.04 on my Lenovo Yoga 3 11 with Ubuntu
Gnome 17.04 and since then sometimes my Laptop won't suspend when I
close the lid. The power led does not blink like it is supposed to do
and when I open the Laptop the lockscreen appears but freezes after a
short time, followed by a blackscreen until eventually it reappears
and allows me to unlock it. After that certain application can not be
started anymore and would freeze if they were running before. These
include Chrome, Gedit and Gnome System Monitor for example. Also my
Laptop will not connect to my WLAN until I restart it.

In syslog I found the line:

"Freezing of tasks failed after 20.005 seconds (18 tasks refusing to
  freeze, wq_busy=0):"

  According to syslog

  network-nanaeger
  whoopsie
  cups-browsed
  wpa-supplicant
  geoclue
  packagekitd
  several evolution-related processes
  goa-daemon
  gnome-software
  geary
  dropbox
  deja-dup-monitor

  are responsible.
I tried disabling some of them, but it did not solve the problem.

Update: I tested different Kernel versions in the last days. So far
there were no issues with suspend/resume using Kernel 4.8 and 4.9. The
problem is present in 4.10 and 4.11.

Update 2: I just encountered this issue with Kernel 4.9.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1583057] Re: Deny audio recording for all snap applications

** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu Xenial)
Status: In Progress => Won't Fix

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

Title:
Deny audio recording for all snap applications

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in pulseaudio source package in Xenial:
  Won't Fix
Status in pulseaudio source package in Yakkety:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Currently snaps on Ubuntu Classic may declare in their snap.yaml that they
want access to pulseaudio. When installed, snapd will auto-connect the
pulseaudio interface giving the snap access to the pulseaudio server for
playback and recording. Because recording is allowed, snaps are allowed to
eavesdrop on users without the user knowing. Phase 1 of the pulseaudio
interface should block recording for snaps while the details of phase 2 (which
combines pulseaudio/snappy interfaces and trust-store) are worked out.

  [Test Case]
First, install pulseaudio then reboot (alternatively can 'killall pulseaudio'
from within your session or logout then killall pulseaudio from a vt and then
log back in). pulseaudio needs to be restarted for the changes to be in effect
and a reboot is the easiest way to achieve that.

  1. unconfined can play audio
  2. unconfined can record audio
  3. non-snap confined can play audio
  4. non-snap confined can record audio
  5. snap confined can play audio
  6. snap confined cannot record audio
  7. snap confined devmode can record audio
  8. indicator-sound and 'Sound Settings... works'
  9. click can record audio if trust-store allows (eg, 'SnapRecorder' from the
store)
  10. click can play audio (eg, playback of recording from 'SnapRecorder' from
the store)

Currently '6' is not implemented and all snaps may record audio. When
this bug is fixed, no snaps should be able to record audio (until
phase 2 is implemented which will be in a different bug).

The attached script tests 1-7. 9 and 10 require testing on a device
  and using

  [Regression Potential]
The patch is quite small and easy to understand and is implemented to only
affect processes that want to record and are running with a security label that
starts with 'snap.' Unconfined processes and process running under other
security labels should not be affected.

  Original description:
Until we have a proper trust-store implementation with snappy and on the
desktop/ubuntu core we want pulseaudio to simply deny any audio recording
request coming from an app shipped as part of a snap.

The implementation adds a module-snappy-policy module to pulseaudio
which adds a hook for audio recording requests and checks on
connection if the apparmor security label of the connecting peer
starts with "snap." which will identify it as a snap application.

Pulseaudio with the patch is available as part of the landing request
  at https://requests.ci-train.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/1428

2017-08-03 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Ack.

I have now seeded qtubuntu-desktop into supported-kiosk seed, with a
comment pointing at this bug.

This should prevent removal of qtubuntu. Sorry for the misshap here.

Regards,

Dimitri.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: avahi-daemon

I encountered this problem on a machine that is integrated into our
work network. I performed a dist-upgrade to Feisty on my desktop and
all went well. I've noticed recently that any dns based work seemed to
take a significantly longer time then normal.

My system is getting dns information on our company internal systems
from two dns servers. Previously, if I tried to establish an ssh
connection with another system I could generally expect the connection
  in under 3 secs.

After the dist-upgrade the time went from under 3 seconds to
approximately 25 seconds. After searching around the system I found an
entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf that cause me a little concern. The line
  in question is:

 hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

I looked around a bit and it seems that the references to mdns are
really talking about communication with the Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD daemon.
Since this looks to be a part of a zeroconf configuration I wasn't
expecting too much in my current environment, as we really only have
  three Mac's.

What concerned me is the idea that if we hit files with no answer
there is a delay while we hit the other options until we hit dns,
which is where the information I seek existed.

For an experiment I tried two separate tests. The first changed the
  line to looks like:

hosts: files dns mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] mdns

The change should have improved the time, but I was still looking at
approximately 23 seconds to return a command prompt on the destination
  machine.

Finally, I change the entry to simply:

  hosts: files dns

After this change I was again receiving the destination command prompt
in under 3 seconds. I don't know if simply changing the file will
correct the problem long-term or not. Seems to help me, but might be
the way to go for most Ubuntu users.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708375] Re: Add support for purple-telegram (telepathy-haze)

2017-08-03 Thread Khurshid Alam
> - I don't understand the line `/usr/lib/purple-2*/`.

You are right. Telegram-purple only creates /usr/lib/purple-2/, so
asterix can be removed. In fact I think we don't need
"/usr/lib/purple-2*/ r", as "/usr/lib/purple-2/*.so mr", will do the
job.

> telegram-purple is supposed to detect telepathy, and avoid the path
> `@{HOME}/.purple/telegram-purple/`. Was it really necessary?

It should but it doesn't at the moment.

And yes, it is necessary with 1.3.x. The plugin stores data after
authentication in either @{HOME}/.purple/telegram-purple/ or @{HOME
}/.telegram-purple/ depending on plugin version number. So telepathy-
haze would require read/write access to that folder, otherwise apparmor
give access-denied and users have to re-authenticate each time after
opening the client (empathy).

I will update the patch. Thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708375] Re: Add support for purple-telegram (telepathy-haze)

2017-08-03 Thread bewied
I did some work on telegram-purple.

- I don't understand the line `/usr/lib/purple-2*/`. Is the asterisk
misplaced, or does telepathy-haze truly create directories with unpredictable
names in `/usr/lib/`?
- Heads up: `/etc/telegram-purple/server.tglpub` can be removed once we release
1.4.0. (But doesn't hurt either.)
- telegram-purple is supposed to detect telepathy, and avoid the path
`@{HOME}/.purple/telegram-purple/`. Was it really necessary? Please open a

Oh well, doesn't hurt, but shouldn't be necessary either.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1708326] Re: RM: obsolete product

2017-08-03 Thread Michał Sawicz
qtubuntu is not obsolete yet - it's the Qt platform support for Mir.

We've started cleaning up its dependencies in:

https://code.launchpad.net/~albaguirre/qtubuntu/papi-
cleanup/+merge/324886

We'll need a follow-up to drop the content-hub dependency.

qtubuntu supports Qt applications running on Mir, it is selected at
runtime, so it has no "depends".

It is still needed for the artful cycle, we're removing it's dependency
on platform-api (lp:~albaguirre/qtubuntu/papi-cleanup/+merge/324886)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 972077] Re: apt repository disk format has race conditions

affects me too

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apt in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/972077

Title:
apt repository disk format has race conditions

Status in APT:
  Fix Released
Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Apt archives are accessed over HTTP; this has resulted in a cluster of
bugs (reported here, and upstream) about problems behind intercepting
  caches, problems with squid etc.

  There are 3 interlocking issues:
A - mirror networks may be out of sync with each other (e.g. a file named on
one mirror may no longer exist, or may not yet exist, on another mirror)
B - updating files on a single mirror is not atomic - and even small windows
of inconsistency will, given enough clients, cause headaches.
C - caches exacerbate race conditions - when one happens, until the cached
data expires, all clients of the cache will suffer from the race

Solving this requires one of several things:
   - file system transactions
   - an archive format that requires only weakly ordered updates to the files
at particular urls with the assumption that only one file may be observed to
change at a time (because a lookup of file A, then B, may get a cache miss on A
and a cache hit on B, so even if all clients strictly go A, then B, updates may
still see old files when paths are reused).
   - super robust clients that repeatedly retry with progressively less cache
friendly headers until they have a consistent view. (This is very tricky to do).

It may be possible to do a tweak to the apt repository format though,
which would allow publishing a race-free format in parallel with the
existing layout, while clients migrate. To be safe against issue (A)
the mirror network would need some care around handling of dns round-
robin mirrors [to minimise the situation where referenced data is not
available], but this should be doable - or alternatively clients doing
'apt-get update' may need to be willing to retry to accommodate round-
  robin skew.

What would such an archive format look like?
It would have only one well known file name (InRelease), which would be
internally signed. Rather than signing e.g. Packages.gz, it would sign a
uniquely named packages and sources file - e.g. Packages-$HASH.gz or
Packages-$serialno.gz.

Backwards compatibility is achieved by using the same filenames for
deb's and the like. We need to keep writing Packages.gz though, and
Releases, until we no longer worry about old apt clients. We can
optimise disk space a little by making Packages.gz a symlink to a
Packages-$HASH.gz (and so on for Sources..), but it may be simpler and
less prone to unexpected behaviour to keep using regular files.

  tl;dr
   * Unique file names for all unique file content with one exception
   * InRelease, a self-signed file that provides hashes and names the index
files (Packages, Sources, Translations etc)
   * Coexists with existing archive layout

  Related bugs:
   * bug 804252: Please support InRelease files
   * bug 1430011: support apt by-hash mirrors
