Title:
systemd ignoring /etc/modules due to blacklist

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
I tried the daily build of 16.04 32-bit to test out the watchdog
daemon code. Usually (Ubuntu 10.04-14.04) I add the watchdog module in
/etc/modules so it is loaded at boot-time, as watchdog timer modules
are not normally auto-loaded due to the risk of an unexpected reboot.

However I now find that systemd is choosing to ignore my command to
load the module in /etc/modules since it appears in the watchdog
blacklist. Typical syslog entries look like this:

Jan 19 16:46:14 ubuntu systemd-modules-load[337]: Module 'softdog' is
blacklisted
Jan 19 17:53:23 ubuntu systemd-modules-load[342]: Module 'softdog' is
blacklisted

This is just dumb! I have explicitly told the system to load the
module, an action that works perfectly well using modprobe or by
adding it to the start script for the watchdog, and yet systemd
chooses to override that because of the blacklist for auto-loaded
modules (in this case in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-watchdog.conf).

  $ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Xenial Xerus (development branch)
  Release: 16.04

  $ apt-cache policy systemd
  systemd:
Installed: 228-4ubuntu1
Candidate: 228-4ubuntu1
Version table:
   *** 228-4ubuntu1 500
  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main i386 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expect to happen is modules added to /etc/modules are loaded at
boot time, and not subject to the blacklist for hardware detect /
  automatic loading.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734410] [NEW] systemd: handle undelegated cgroup2 hierarchy

2017-11-24 Thread Christian Brauner
Public bug reported:

Hey everyone,

Current systemd versions all fail when the unified cgroup hierarchy is
not-writable. This is especially problematic in containers where the
systemd administrator might decide to not delegate the unified hierarchy
or when running with a liblxc driver that doesn't yet know how to handle
the unified cgroup hierarchy. I've pushed patches to systemd upstream
that let systemd ingnore the non-delegated unified hierarchy. The
relevant commits are:

e07aefbd675b651f8d45b5fb458f2747b04d6e04
2d56b80a1855836abf1d7458394c345ad9d55382
1ff654e28b7b8e7d0a0be33522a84069ac6b07c0

These patches will be in 235 but should be backported from xenial
upwards.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1731796] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 23s! [gdbus:2878]

2017-11-24 Thread Arlie Stephens
Happened again. Auto-bug reporting didn't recognize this report as
similar, so created bug 1734405

Note - compiz was in Z state (per top), consuming 100% of a cpu (per
top) throughout the incident. I was able to login via ssh and look at
things.

I don't believe that a stuck compiz process could be caused by soft
lockups. So the compiz process *may* be closer to the root cause?

This is a bug report about errors during the upgrade process. I don't
know whether or not my samba installation was working immediately
before the upgrade; the windows box that was intended to be a client
died and has not been replaced. Don't believe my answers to the forced
  questions.

  ***

My ubuntu system locks up regularly. Bugs I've reported about this get
closed for inattention, after being ignored, and queries about how to
do basic debugging get the same treatment, so I just power cycle
  whenever it happens again.

This time the lock up happened while the GUI upgrade-everything-to-
  latest tool was running.

When I power cycled the box to recover, the system was unusable -
flashing "system problem detected" popups, none staying stable long
  enough to respond.

ssh + "sudo apt-get update" + "sudo apt-get upgrade" pointed me to
  "sudo dpkg --configure -a"

That command reported numerous errors - I don't know which of them are
"normal" for this system, but hidden by the GUI, and which are new.

But it got the system semi-usable from the GUI, so now I'm clicking on
"yes, report it" for the many pop-ups, of which this is one.

FWIW, samba is one of the ones "dpkg --reconfigure -a" complained
  about.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734395] [NEW] mkfs.ext4dev unrecognised file system

2017-11-24 Thread Paul Graydon
Public bug reported:

This is probably a bit of a daft one, and it's not blocking me on
anything, but I see this more as a UX bug.

mkfs.ext4dev creates a file system that mount then can't mount, unless
it is told explicitly that it is ext4.

(on a side note, what is ext4dev? Can't seem to find a solid answer)

doing a normal mkfs.ext4 works perfectly fine, as you'd expect.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1733683] Please test proposed package

2017-11-24 Thread Stéphane Graber
Hello Michael, or anyone else affected,

Accepted ust into artful-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ust/2.9.1-1ubuntu0.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-artful to verification-done-artful. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-artful. In either case, details of your
testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

python3-lttngust tries to load unversionned agent library

Status in ust package in Ubuntu:

Status in ust source package in Xenial:

Status in ust source package in Zesty:
  Fix Committed
Status in ust source package in Artful:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
The python3-lttngust package contains bindings that use ctypes to
interact with a dedicated library provided by the liblttng-ust-python-
agent0. The python code loads the library by name but it targets the
un-versioned ".so" which is part of the dev package.

This means that when installed without the dev package the bindings
  won't work.

The fix is to load the library by name and use the SONAME version
  ".so.0".

I'll provide a debdiff for the affected versions.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

Title:
  Left mouse button stops working

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops
and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron
  15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in
gmail, by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a
Firefox user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not
happened if i dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible
that the plugin is to blame.

  Symptom
  ===
The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will
not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This
happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to
function as normal.

When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log
out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as
  normal.

This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and
desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. I will
appreciate any soltion or workaround.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734038] Re: utils don't understand «include "/where/ever"» (was: Potential regression found with apparmor test on Xenial/Zesty)

2017-11-24 Thread John Johansen
Yes, the split parser has been a issue for a long time. There has been a
plan to make the flex/yacc/C parser code available as a lib for the
other tools but its one of those things that never gets resources
allocated.

The short term fix for this is probably a backport of a newer version of
the python utils.

2017-11-24 Thread Christian Boltz

Exactly, that's the cause of this bug. I'll change the title to make it
obvious.

Interestingly, it has been this way for years (I checked 2.9, but it
probably also affects even older versions) without someone noticing it.
Therefore this bug doesn't qualify as regression IMHO ;-)

** Summary changed:

- Potential regression found with apparmor test on Xenial/Zesty
+ utils don't understand «include "/where/ever"» (was: Potential regression
found with apparmor test on Xenial/Zesty)

** Also affects: apparmor
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

smoser, yeah, so like cloud-init.service should want/after
systemd-resolved.service; or e.g. systemd-resolved.service should declare
itself before cloud-init.service
smoser, i think changing it in systemd unit might be better.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734167] Re: DNS doesn't work in no-cloud as launched by ubuntu

2017-11-24 Thread Scott Moser
I think the primary issue is that cloud-init.service is depending on using the
network fully.
cloud-init.service runs:
  After=networking.service
  After=systemd-networkd-wait-online.service
  Before=network-online.target

But systemd-resolved.service runs
 After=systemd-networkd.service network.target
 Before=network-online.target nss-lookup.target

I tried adding to cloud-init.service.
 After=systemd-resolved.service
but that did not help things.

like it should work. The documentation states:

"With ds=nocloud-net, the seedfrom value must start with http://,
  https:// or ftp://;

And https is not going to work for a raw IP address.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1730399] Re: Add krackattacks mitigation

2017-11-24 Thread Andrew Shadura
** Changed in: wpa (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

Title:
  Add krackattacks mitigation

Status in wpa package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  See for reference:
  https://www.krackattacks.com/#ap-mitigations

Yes this is not a bug. However, it has been noted on ubuntu-devel that adding
some features even to stable releases could be justified in *some* cases.
First of paramount importance is that the fix introduces no regression.
In this case this code is *only* used if a new parameter is set:

  wpa_disable_eapol_key_retries=1

if this parameter is missing, behaviour will not change.
So any regression introduced will be caused by a deliberate admin decision,
from where all responsability could be denied (use at your own risk, yadda,
yadda...)

Then is this parameter useful: it could be for the hundred of millions
of Android Phone that are not yet patched (6.0 et upper) and will
never be patched (about 50% of existing Android Phones).

Please note that at least one wifi provider has already decided to
provide this feature to help its users:

  https://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory
  /cisco-sa-20171016-wpa

so this is something that leaders do :-)

I have already patched my AP that runs Ubuntu 16 LTS (see attached
patch against 2.4-0ubuntu6.2, I have used my AP for 3 days now with a
Ubuntu and an Android client without problem) and I could try to
provide a patch for Ubuntu 17. This kind of patch is really trivial
anyway, since it's just a port of the upstream patch in hostapd:

  https://w1.fi/cgit/hostap/commit/?id=6f234c1e2ee1ede29f2412b7012b3345ed8e52d3

However I have a big problem. Any security patch (and this is a security
enhancing patch at least) is only worth as much as it is *tested*. And I don't
have the means to verify that mitigation is effective, as the vulnerability
discoverer has not provided (for obvious reasons) public testing code for
clients.
I think that Ubuntu should have this code (or did you just distribute
security patches without testing that they are effective ? that would not be
very serious IMO).
There is no chance that M. Vanhoef sends his code to any old dog on the
internet, so Canonical is my only chance for a real test of this feature on an
Ubuntu AP (short of rewriting the attack code myself, not an attractive
proposition).
If in fact you don't have the testing (well, attack) code feel free to
dismiss my bug report as irrelevant. But if you have please consider the
opportunity to add some goodwill to Ubuntu. Thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734038] Re: Potential regression found with apparmor test on Xenial/Zesty

2017-11-24 Thread Andy Whitcroft
This appears to be being triggered because there are actually two
independent profile parsers in apparmor. There is a C version used by
the apparmor_parse which correctly interprets the 'include "xxx"' syntax
and then loads the profile. There is also a python parser (in aa.py)
which only seems to understand the 'include ' syntax and it is this
which throws errors when running the utility commands.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734344] Re: systemd 234-2ubuntu12.1 ADT test failure with linux 4.13.0-18.21

2017-11-24 Thread Stefan Bader
The s390x failure is because tests now run in a VM and on s390x there is
no grub (zipl is used as the boot loader).

I have seen these messages logged more often when we do any hotplug
operations.. ex. cpu hotplug..

Ok. .this is the continuation of LTC #144627 / Launchpad #1682774.

As suggested in that bug, we did change udev script to create
temporary file under /run and that patch is available in ubuntu 17.10.

Looks like this is udev script issue. If I modify systemd-udevd like
  below it works fine.

I've limited udev knowledge. I don't know if you have any other better
  solution to this issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734040] Re: openssh: The concurrency of settimeofday and ssh connect would lead to coredump

2017-11-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I appreciate the quality of this bug report and I'm sure
it'll be helpful to others experiencing the same issue.

This sounds like an upstream bug to me. Please can you verify this by
building directly from the latest upstream source? If this can be
confirmed as an upstream bug, the best route to getting it fixed in
Ubuntu in this case would be to file an upstream bug if you're able to
do that. Otherwise, I'm not sure what we can do directly in Ubuntu to
fix the problem.

Slightly old, but still mostly applicable info about doing so can be
found at [1]

If you do end up filing an upstream bug, please link to it from here.
Thanks!

the direct cause of the coredump, is that the function __mulvsi3 in
gcc checked the plus operation is overflow, then this gcc function
  abort().

the reason of the overflow is cause by the time-setting operation when
do ssh connect. in function ms_subtract_diff . the timeoutp get a very
big value because of the time-change.

So could we add a limitation for the differ of the 2 values get from
gettimeofday ? if it's too big, would lead to overflow, we set a default value
and report a warning log.
thanks for you attention and expect your reply.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1722708] Re: Crash when setting laptop display resolution

2017-11-24 Thread Frode Solheim
This problem still affects me:
- I got a full HD monitor (1920x1080) connected via HDMI.
- Laptop display with internal resolution 3200x1800.

If I try to change the laptop display to 1600x900 (custom added
resolution btw) to use 100% window scaling on both monitors, I'm
instantly returned to the login screen (resolution changes are not
applied). This happens every time I try to do this.

However, I was able to change the laptop monitor resolution to
1920x1080! And, afterwards, I could even successfully change to
1600x900.

Title:
Crash when setting laptop display resolution

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
This system has a 4k laptop screen with resolution 3840x2160, and an
external HP monitor connected via HDMI, resolution 1920x1200. Windows,
fonts etc are not scaled properly on the external monitor (too large,
etc), and the only workaround I've found with earlier versions and
other distros is to set the laptop display to 1920x1080 mode, so
that's what I'm trying here as well.

However, when doing that, the X (wayland, not sure if the package is
correct here) session crashes and brings me back to login screen.

So to summarize: connect the external monitor, go to Settings >
Devices > Displays, click primary built in display, observe that it
shows Resolution 3840x2160 (16:9) and Scale 200%, change resolution to
  1920x1080 (16:9), click Apply --> crash.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1716203] Re: Backport packages for 16.04.4 HWE stack

2017-11-24 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Timo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xorg-server-hwe-16.04 into xenial-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server-hwe-16.04/2:1.19.5-0ubuntu2~16.04.1 in a few hours, and then in
the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-xenial. In either case, details of your
testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

  [Impact]

  *** hwe-16.04 refresh for 16.04.4 ***

A minor update, only some driver updates plus a newer Mesa.

Mesa needs llvm-toolchain-5.0 and libclc, libdrm, wayland-protocols
  updates.

  [Test case]

upgrade from/to stock & old hwe stack, test desktop usage

  [Regression potential]

  libdrm:
Slim to none, changes from 2.4.76 to 2.4.83
  - amdgpu: pci-id handling moved here, new pci-ids, bugfixes, tests
  - intel: new pci-ids
  - drm: leak fixes, manpage updates
  - exynos, etnaviv, freedreno, android: fixes, new stuff

  wayland-protocols:
None, just adds a few protocol definitions (xml files)

  llvm-toolchain-5.0:
  None, a new package

  libclc:
I'd say none, very little has changed, added support for llvm-5 is the main
reason for this slightly newer snapshot

  xorg-server:
Slim, it's an upstream bugfix release, changes from 1.19.3 to 1.19.5 include:
  - security fixes
  - backported bugfixes to glamor, modesetting driver, xwayland etc

  mesa:
New major release plus a few bugfix updates after that. Regressions at this
point are less likely. Upstream is tested by Intel CI system for instance. And
we're already testing it via a ppa on OEM systems for 16.04.4. Tracking bug for
the bugfix release (xenial & artful) is bug 1727390

  [Other information]

build order: [libdrm, wayland-protocols, llvm-toolchain-5.0], [libclc,
  xorg-server], mesa

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734212] Re: package openssh-server 1:7.5p1-10 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-11-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi tenwit,
thanks for your report!
You did just right to clean up and complete the installation.

On the error that occurred, what I can find related in your log is:
frontend: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.

I found various such issues across the past - not frequent but every now and
then:
- bug 951404
- bug 821630

None came to a perfect conclusion, but it matches the error in your log as well
as the symptom "the graphical login having crashed".
That took down everything else with it, so the upgrade which you completed
later on.

You might read through those bugs, there are some hints on lightdm.conf
being responsible, but since you are "out of the bug" already that might
not matter to you anymore.

On the actual issue I don't see openssh related in any way - instead I'll
re-file this against
Given that this seems to be something like an X server dying checking and
attaching those logs might help the Team around lightdm and such as well.

'upgrade' in bionic should by default autoremove as well

Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
In bionic, apt upgrade should also autoremove by default. I have a few
bionic systems (upgrades from xenial mostly) which are not yet showing
that behaviour, it may be we haven't implemented that yet so this is
just a placeholder bug in that case :)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1734285] [NEW] unattended-upgrades.service ignores (changes in) /etc/apt/preferences.d/ files

2017-11-24 Thread Richard Arends
Public bug reported:

unattended-upgrades.service ignores (changes in) /etc/apt/preferences.d/
files that are done after the service has started.

For example we 'pin' firefox on to a specific version and if a
configuration file is placed after the service is started, the pinning
is ignored. In our sitation that results in a newer firefox then we want
at this moment.

We run Ubuntu on 2000+ workstations and our users often start a
workstation and let it run for days/weeks before rebooting and thus
restarting the service unattended-upgrades again.

I did not test if changes in other apt files are ignored also.

** Affects: unattended-upgrades (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
