Bug description:
  we currently have no working resolver on snappy installs,
  /etc/resolv.conf is the boilerplate one.

  on the low level we seem to have DNS from the DHCP server though

  ogra@localhost:~$ grep -r DNS= /run/systemd/netif

  SRU INFORMATION
  ===
  Fix:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-systemd/systemd.git/commit/?h=ubuntu-xenial=0a96feb1561

  Test case:

  I cannot reproduce this in a VM or normal laptop, this is somehow
  specific to the reporter's hardware/DHCP server config.

   * Configure systemd-networkd for an ethernet interface, either directly or
via netplan; remove it from /etc/network/interfaces{,.d}
   * Reboot.
   * With current xenial's systemd, if /run/systemd/netif/state does not have
"DNS=" then /etc/resolv.conf will not have any nameserver.
   * With the proposed update, /etc/resolv.conf should have the DHCP-provided
nameserver.

  Regression potential: Low; in 16.04 LTS we do not configure networkd
  by any Ubuntu tool, so networkd is not widely used there yet. For
  systems which do use it it could happen that interface-specific DNS
  servers now appear in resolv.conf that should not be global -- but we
  do not have anything that would configure or obey this setup in 16.04.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04) by an insufficient compiler!

2018-03-03 Thread ke bai
Solve the problem with the instruction from #57 under Ubuntu 16.04.4
LTS.

At first, I cannot find the driver when I typed nvidia-smi. So I try to
reinstall the nvidia driver. In this process, I met the absolutely same
problem as

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1030325/nvidia-driver-
installation-nvidia-version-magic-4-4-0-116-generic-smp-mod_unload-
modversions-should-be-4-4-0-116-generic-smp-mod_unload-modversions-
retpoline-/

And I also cannot log in and get to the desktop.

Thanks so much!

  settings was missing most of its functionality - could not change

  Rebooted into 4.4.0-112 kernel and all was well.

  The root cause of the problem has been found to be installing the -116
  kernel without a sufficiently updated version of gcc. In my case, my
  system received the gcc update AFTER the kernel update.

  Uninstalling the -116 kernel and reinstalling it with the updated
  version of gcc solved the problem for me.

  I have an automated preseed installation that uses these lines to add

  d-i apt-setup/local0/comment string JTS local repository

  d-i apt-setup/local1/source boolean false

(seehttps://github.com/jschule/ubuntu/blob/d46f1cef49ed71dc4bfe317119cccd3f39097ef4/preseed/jts.txt
  for complete preseed file that causes the problem).

  In xenial the installation fails because the GPG key for the local0
  repo is not loaded into the system so that it can be used (see
  screenshot). Strangely, "chroot /target apt-key list" shows the key
  9E62229E to be installed.

  Just to be sure that there is no problem with my repo and key I
  started the Xenial live CD and installed my repo there manually. All
  works well. IMHO this shows that the problem is clearly related to the
  automated installation with preseed.

  Maybe this is related to #1512347, that was the only thing I could
  find on Launchpad that is in the same area.

  If you want to reproduce this then you can checkout the scripts from
  https://github.com/jschule/ubuntu/tree/gh-pages/qemu and run "./run.sh
  xenial" to start my installation.

  I found a very ugly workaround by changing the apt-setup lines to
  this:

  d-i apt-setup/local0/repository string deb
http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu trusty partner
  d-i apt-setup/local0/source boolean false

  d-i apt-setup/local1/repository string deb http://jschule.github.io/ubuntu/ /
  d-i apt-setup/local1/comment string JTS local repository
  d-i apt-setup/local1/source boolean false
  d-i apt-setup/local1/key string http://jschule.github.io/ubuntu/repo.key

  d-i apt-setup/local2/repository string deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main
  d-i apt-setup/local2/comment string Google Chrome Browser
  d-i apt-setup/local2/source boolean false
  d-i apt-setup/local2/key string
http://dl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub

  I suppose that the workaround works because now the local0 repo is one
  where the signing key is already part of Ubuntu. I just hope that
  there is no package in the trusty partner repo that is not also in the
  xenial partner repo.

  For me it is very important that you fix this bug before 16.04 is
  released so that I can continue to use Ubuntu with an automated setup.

  Justification
  =
  This transition was ready two weeks ago, but we wanted to do one major GNOME
transition at a time. libgweather transition went smoothly. gnome-desktop3 got
entangled with some other incomplete transitions (in particular,
mesa/libglvnd). A Qt transition and a kdepim transition the week of 18.04
Feature Freeze made it impossible for those transitions to clear before Feature
Freeze.

  We could have uploaded evolution now to avoid paperwork, but it feels
  like it would be smoother to be a bit more patient and do this soon
  after Feature Freeze.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1752399] Re: net-cpp fails to build with g++ 7

2018-03-03 Thread Steve Langasek
marking as affecting the reverse-dependency tree of net-cpp. Since
there doesn't appear to be a maintainer for net-cpp itself anymore,
either someone interested in the reverse-dependencies will need to step
up to maintain it, or the entire tree will need to be dropped from the
release pocket.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04) by an insufficient compiler!

2018-03-03 Thread John Sopko
I manage 300+ machines that run openafs that has a dkms built kernel
module like the nvidia module that needs to be built. I also manage
dozens of nvidia gpu servers where users have sudo access and can
install anything they want. Here is a snippet of what I found. Note this
is for 16.04 systems but 14.04 systems running the 4.4.0-116 kernel will
have similar problems:

Short story, if your machine is not using the Ubuntu supplied gcc you
will have issues with afs and nvidia built kernel modules or any dkms
built kernel modules. Longer story below.

NOTE! this problem affects at least, openafs, nvidia, virtual box or
any dkms built module. I am going to forward this info to
gr...@cs.unc.edu. This started with the latest Ubuntu 4.4.0-116
kernel version.

Looking through that bug and testing took me hours. The short story is
the machines having issues with openafs.ko module are ones that have
the Ubuntu toolchain ppa that has a gcc compiler suite that does not
support the "retpoline" feature which was recently put in to fix the
Spectre security issue. The nvidia module will also have issues.

The machines using the Ubuntu supplied gcc compiler are the ones that
are not having issues. But, host olympia was a special case.

The compiler that works, using "gcc -v"

gcc version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9)

The ones that don't work like host bvisionserver8:

gcc version 5.4.1 20160904

You can use "apt-cache policy gcc" to show what repo the compiler
comes from. WARNING, /usr/bin/gcc is a link to /usr/bin/gcc-5, the gcc
package is a meta package and you need to query gcc-5. If you query
gcc it shows coming from the standard Ubuntu repo but /usr/bin/gcc-5
is coming from the toolchain repo.

A good gcc-5 shows:

classroom:55% apt-cache policy gcc-5

The bad compilers show:

And you can see
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-toolchain-r-ubuntu-test-xenial.list
repo is configure on those machines.

On a good machine modinfo openafs shows that retpoline is turned on in

  error 4 in i965_dri.so[7fbca2af6000+7e4000]

  This is caused by a mesa upgrade, which added a patch for bug #1727401. The
crasher is reproduced on:
  - gen4 / gen5 Intel
  - if using modesetting X driver, like when xserver-xorg-video-intel is not
installed, or the HWE stack is installed (xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04 defaults
to modesetting)

  [Test case]
  Log in to Unity, open the dash or try to log out etc. Compiz shouldn't crash.

  [Regression potential]
  The backported patches need to be tested, here for regressions and on 1727401
that they fix the original bug (again).

  Best to test on a wide array of Intel HW:
  gen4 (965GM/GM45/G45)
  gen5 (Ironlake)
  gen6 (Sandy Bridge)
  gen7 (Bay Trail, Ivy Bridge, Haswell)
  gen8 (Braswell, Broadwell)

The properties that are needed to write a rule for this device to create
a stable symbolic link are

E: ID_MODEL_ID=0004
E: ID_SERIAL_SHORT=95635333131351F0A1B2
E: ID_VENDOR_ID=2886

To use these in a udev rule one needs to write

SUBSYSTEM=="tty", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2886", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0004",
ATTRS{serial}=="95635333131351F0A1B2", SYMLINK+="ttyARD0"

If one enters

 udevadm info -a /dev/ttyACM0

one gets the whole tree of devices from /dev/ttyACM0 to the PCI device
for the USB host controller (more that 150 lines of babble for 7
devices). These parameter/property names are all printed in rules file
format (e.g. ATTRS{serial}="95635333131351F0A1B2") but it's impossible
to know which are the correct ones.

In fact if one tries to filter just the parameters needed for the rule
with

 udevadm info -a /dev/ttyACM0 | grep -e vendor -e product -e serial

you get

ATTRS{product}=="Seeeduino v4"
ATTRS{serial}=="95635333131351F0A1B2"
ATTRS{product}=="EHCI Host Controller"
ATTRS{serial}==":00:1a.0"
ATTRS{subsystem_vendor}=="0x1028"
ATTRS{vendor}=="0x8086"

which doesn't even list the values needed for the rule: idVendor
(corresponding to ID_VENDOR_ID) is missing as is idProduct
(corresponding to ID_MODEL_ID) and there are multiple "serial"
parameters.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1508146] Re: Alt+left/right arrows switch between tty consoles (Gnome Shell vanishes), cannot disable

2018-03-03 Thread Timothy Meade
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1710637 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1710637

I'm experiencing this issue after an update through update-manager
(seemingly equivalent to a standard apt-get update).

Based on a comment on another bug [1], I have found that incorrect
configurations are present in my dump keys.

I was able to correct the issue by running:

sudo dumpkeys |grep -v -E '^(\W+)alt(\W+)keycode (105|106) =
(Incr|Decr)_Console' |sudo loadkeys

I am commenting here because I do not experience the ctrl+c issue, and
believe these may be two related but not identical bugs.

gnome-shell, Xorg, and XWayland are running. mutter is not.

That's still pretty slow, considering my system didn't take too long too
boot up in other releases of Ubuntu (~15 secs before, it's now 25 secs).

  It appears that font hinting in 17.10 (beta) doesn't work as expected.
  The issue is easy to miss if you have antialiasing enabled system-
  wise. However, if you install "gnome-tweak-tool" and disable
  antialiasing there, the problem becomes obvious.

  Here is how it looks on 17.10 beta:
  https://postimg.org/image/3auqsbkqtn/

  And here is how it looks on my 16.04 machine (and this is pretty much how
it's supposed to look):
  https://postimg.org/image/85n5ss3l4b/

  * When comparing the pictures make sure you "Open image in new tab"
  and see them without browser zoom, otherwise the problem may no be
  obvious.

  I suspect that this issue is caused by a bug in some base font
  rendering package that Ubuntu uses (edit: the problem is probably
  caused by FreeType 2.8.0, see my comments below). A couple of months
  ago a similar issue was reported (and promptly fixed) in Chromium
  after they had changed something in FreeType rendering
  (https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=748997).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1322024] Re: Make Hexchat the default IRC client instead of XChat in Ubuntu 14.10 and later versions

2018-03-03 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Technically, there really isn't a default IRC client in Ubuntu so I'm
closing the ubuntu-meta task.

My previous comment should be "hexchat is *NOT* currently in main*.

I'm keeping the bug open because there's a suggestion that hexchat
should provide a transitional package to upgrade xchat users to it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1506744] Re: Newly installed applications do not show in the dash

2018-03-03 Thread hansmex
Yesterday, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04. I then installed the Cinnamon
desktop package.

After installing from software center or using DEB, packages don't show
up when searching for them. This thread is close to TWO years old and
still there is no solution.

The solutions provided above don't work, because those processes aren't
active according to the System Monitor.

Shame on an otherwise perfect OS!
Thank you for solving this issue.

days ago and I have an issue with newly installed applications not appearing in
the dash when I search for them, they can be started via console but the
icons/launchers of newly installed applications will only appear in the dash
after session is restarted.

  [Test case]
  1. Install a new applicaiton (using apt-get or the software center)
  2. Make sure the application is listed in the Unity Dash

  [Possible Regressions]
  Unity fails to list all the applications, not just the newly installed ones.

Bug description:
  Raised this upstream:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/8328

  In short, in systemd 237 as it ships with Bionic, if a unit has a
  drop-in present but has been masked, systemctl is-enabled and
  systemctl list-unit-files report incorrect state, showing the units as
  enabled rather than masked.

  This works as-expected in systemd 229 under Xenial. I have not tested
  under systemd 234 in artful so I cannot say for sure exactly when this
  was introduced, but will spin up a quick test to see if this also
  exists under systemd 234.

  Scilab cannot create Scilab Java Main-Class (we have not been able to
  find the main Scilab class. Check if the Scilab and thirdparty
  packages are available).

  Expected results:
  Scilab works normally on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS system.

  Actual results:
  see error above.

  [Regression potential]
  The fix is a simple oneliner that allows libjogl2-java to detect Mesa with
both new and original version of Mesa.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1752938] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration

2018-03-03 Thread Niels Böhm
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1751414 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751414

On Xubuntu, can you try downgrading the package xubuntu-default-settings
from version 18.04.2 to version 18.04.1? Maybe it's related to what I'm
seeing in bug #1752798

(you can find the older package here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-default-
settings/18.04.1/+build/13749132 )

Title:
  Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I don't know which package causes this problem. The thing is ugrading
  Ubuntu 18.04 disables my GPU hardware acceleration.

  glxinfo_before_upgrade
  OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
  OpenGL renderer string: Radeon RX 560 Series (POLARIS11 / DRM 3.23.0 /
4.15.0-10-generic, LLVM 5.0.1)
  OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 17.3.3

  glxinfo_after_upgrade
  OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
  OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 256 bits)
  OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 17.3.3

  This problem is reproducible.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 18.04 daily live. I've tried Kubuntu 18.04 Feb 26's daily
live(the installer in Mar 1 crashes which prevents me from installing it) and
Xubuntu 18.04 Mar 2's daily live. Ubuntu is utilizing my GPU in live cd session
and after the fresh install Ubuntu is also utilizing my GPU.
  2. Reboot into the newly installed system, do a dist-upgrade and reboot
again. Opengl renderer falls back to llvmpipe.

2018-03-03 Thread Evgeniy Yanyuk
I think you didn't get the framebuffer working. Please, reboot and show
us the result of:

$ locale
$ ls /dev/fb0
$ journalctl -b
$ lspci

Check if the problem is solved with:
$ setupcon --current-tty
