[Touch-packages] [Bug 1778464] Re: package ifupdown 0.8.17ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration

2018-07-14 Thread Bob MacKnight
This is happening very often - I attempt to load an app and the load
fails due to the reported issue. I have not reported this every time it
has happened - if I did, you would be hearing from me quite often.

Title:
WiFI hard blocked after resuming laptop (RTL 8723BE)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 18.04 and everything seems to work
fine, till I suspended and resumed the laptop. After resume, the wifi
is hard blocked is rfkill. Reinstalling drivers, different drivers,
nothing helped. All this was done under Secure Boot disabled under
  Ubuntu and BIOS (UEFI).

The WiFI card is Realtek 8723BE. laptop is HP AB035TX Pavilion 15. If
any further info is required, I'll add it on notification. I am
familiar with Linux, any help will be really appreciated.

P.S: If this wifi card is the issue, please suggest some PCI-mini card that
will work with my Ubuntu, even after suspend and resume (Ideally a 2.4/5G + BT
5.0)

  Thank you all!

[i915] [regression] Tray icons are displayed incorrectly with MESA
  18.0.5

Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The recent upgrade from MESA 17.2.8 to 18.0.5 is causing the icons of some
applications bundled with Ubuntu 16.04 to be displayed incorrectly in the
status bar. The icons are surrounded by a shadow and some colorization is
missing.
The problem can be seen on the attached picture - VLC and Electrum icons are
affected by the problem (VLC's icon is surrounded by an extra shadow and
Electrum icon is supposed to be blue but is all black), and HexChat's icon is
displayed correctly next to them.

I'm using Linux Mint MATE 18.3 (based on Ubuntu 16.04's package base),
but the problem is present on Ubuntu MATE 16.04, too. The hardware i'm
using is ThinkPad T400 with an integrated Intel graphic accelerator,
using the default intel Xorg driver.

appearing in apps like firefox three line/bar menu icon

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:

Status in xorg-server source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  PROBLEM

Recent libgl-mesa 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~16.04.1 graphics update prevents
drop down list menu appearing in apps like firefox three line/bar menu
  icon.

After recently applying updates, left clicking on some application
menus and icons no longer displays a drop-down menu list.

For example in Firefox when I left-click on the **three line/bar**
icon in the upper right-hand corner, the normal drop down list menu
does not display. Also the menu drop down doesn't display in
keypassx. Further xchat-gnome doesn't even display a window.

Another anomaly is that my KDE bottom menu bar changed to a dark
  theme.

  BACKGROUND

I'm using Kubuntu 16.04 on an Intel i7-7700k computer with Intel HD
Graphics. I have KDE **System Settings -> Compositor** enabled with:

 Scale method :Accurate
 Rendering backend: OpenGL 3.1
 OpenGL interface: GLX
Tearing prevention ("vsync"): Full screen repaints
Keep window thumbnails:Only for Shown Windows

  INVESTIGATION

After several hours of searching the Internet I found one other case
  of a similar problem.

 Firefox's Menu Bar won't open
 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1194760

The reported solution was to rollback the graphics drivers.

Because the issues cropped up after applying updates on July 6, 2018,
I tracked down the list of recent updates with:

 grep -A 2 'Start-Date: 2018-07-06' /var/log/apt/history.log | tail
  -1 >packages.txt

After some editing to place packages on separate lines, and
identifying the grahics libraries, I arrived at the following list:

To revert to the prior graphic drivers I tracked down the '.deb'
packages for each of the above packages and downloaded the
  '17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1' version.

  For example:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/amd64/libxatracker2/17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1

I also discovered that some of these depended on
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1 so I also downloaded the following files:

libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_amd64.deb
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_i386.deb

  WORKAROUND (ROLLBACK TO PRIOR VERSION)

mesa-vdpau-drivers_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb

After rebooting, all the issues disappeared.

For example I was once again able to left-click on the Firefox **three

menu bar retured to the normal "breeze" light grey colour.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1780664] Re: Recent libgl-mesa graphics update prevents drop down list menu appearing in apps like firefox three line/bar menu icon

2018-07-14 Thread Bram Metsch
I also experienced this problem, and upgrading xserver-xorg-core and
xserver-common fixed it.
So, it is rather a mesa/xorg-server incompatibilty?

Title:
Recent libgl-mesa graphics update prevents drop down list menu
appearing in apps like firefox three line/bar menu icon

Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  PROBLEM

Recent libgl-mesa 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~16.04.1 graphics update prevents
drop down list menu appearing in apps like firefox three line/bar menu
  icon.

After recently applying updates, left clicking on some application
menus and icons no longer displays a drop-down menu list.

For example in Firefox when I left-click on the **three line/bar**
icon in the upper right-hand corner, the normal drop down list menu
does not display. Also the menu drop down doesn't display in
keypassx. Further xchat-gnome doesn't even display a window.

Another anomaly is that my KDE bottom menu bar changed to a dark
  theme.

  BACKGROUND

I'm using Kubuntu 16.04 on an Intel i7-7700k computer with Intel HD
Graphics. I have KDE **System Settings -> Compositor** enabled with:

 Scale method :Accurate
 Rendering backend: OpenGL 3.1
 OpenGL interface: GLX
Tearing prevention ("vsync"): Full screen repaints
Keep window thumbnails:Only for Shown Windows

  INVESTIGATION

After several hours of searching the Internet I found one other case
  of a similar problem.

 Firefox's Menu Bar won't open
 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1194760

The reported solution was to rollback the graphics drivers.

Because the issues cropped up after applying updates on July 6, 2018,
I tracked down the list of recent updates with:

 grep -A 2 'Start-Date: 2018-07-06' /var/log/apt/history.log | tail
  -1 >packages.txt

After some editing to place packages on separate lines, and
identifying the grahics libraries, I arrived at the following list:

  libgles2-mesa:amd64 (17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~16.04.1)
  libglapi-mesa:amd64 (17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~16.04.1)

  --

To revert to the prior graphic drivers I tracked down the '.deb'
packages for each of the above packages and downloaded the
  '17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1' version.

  For example:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/amd64/libxatracker2/17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1

I also discovered that some of these depended on
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1 so I also downloaded the following files:

libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_amd64.deb
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_i386.deb

  WORKAROUND (ROLLBACK TO PRIOR VERSION)

  Install older versions with:

  sudo dpkg -i \
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_i386.deb \
libegl1-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libgbm1_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libgl1-mesa-dri_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libgl1-mesa-dri_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_i386.deb \
libgl1-mesa-glx_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libgl1-mesa-glx_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_i386.deb \
libglapi-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libglapi-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_i386.deb \
libgles2-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libosmesa6_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libosmesa6_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_i386.deb \
libwayland-egl1-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libxatracker2_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
mesa-vdpau-drivers_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb

After rebooting, all the issues disappeared.

For example I was once again able to left-click on the Firefox **three
line/bar** menu and view the drop down list menu. Also the KDE bottom
menu bar retured to the normal "breeze" light grey colour.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1780846] Re: After update 2018-07-08 menus and buttons are behaving badly

2018-07-14 Thread Daniel Novotny
Like David, I downgraded the mesa packages in order for the problem to
disapear. The package system needed the old libllvm library
(unfortunately, I purged it with "sudo apt autoremove" before) so my
command line for this downgrade/fix was

sudo dpkg -i \
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_i386.deb \
libgbm1_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libwayland-egl1-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libegl1-mesa_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libgl1-mesa-dri_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libgl1-mesa-dri_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_i386.deb \
mesa-vdpau-drivers_17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1_amd64.deb

now the menus and buttons look normally

Menus and buttons are behaving badly. This is a general issue, affecting most
programs.
Text in buttons is not always being displayed.
When you mouse over an entry in a menu list the previous entry disappears
e.g. the logout menu (power button icon at top right of panel)
Menu items are getting red backgrounds where they were not before.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1488880] Re: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

2018-07-14 Thread John Gwinner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1594715 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1594715

I ran into this as well.

Steps to duplicate:

Installed NOOBS V2.8.2, then Raspian, on a Pi B+

Installed OpenCV via the instructions at:
https://www.pyimagesearch.com/2017/09/04/raspbian-stretch-install-opencv-3-python-on-your-raspberry-pi/

Ran the program "test_image.py" from same page.

Got the error:

WARNING **: Error retrieving accessibility bus address:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not
provided by any .service files

The page at https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=874692

referred me to here. So, I'm adding my voice :)

I understand the requirement to leave accessibility on, normally, but I
could question the requirement of that on a hacker type board.

I looked at the duplicate bug, and this error seems a little different.
The WiFi works fine on my Pi. I just get the error "Error retrieving
accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:
The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files"
consistently.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1780664] Re: Recent libgl-mesa graphics update prevents drop down list menu appearing in apps like firefox three line/bar menu icon

2018-07-14 Thread Curtis Gedak
Thanks Timo for looking at this issue.

Following is the output requested:

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.7

$

I'm not running 18.04 so I am unable to comment on whether the issue
exists there.

QUESTION: If I enable the testing PPA, will the changes be limited to
this isue, or will it also affect other apps?

This is my main development computer and I depend on a stable system for
my purposes.

Thanks,
Curtis

To revert to the prior graphic drivers I tracked down the '.deb'
packages for each of the above packages and downloaded the
  '17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1' version.

  For example:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/amd64/libxatracker2/17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1

I also discovered that some of these depended on
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1 so I also downloaded the following files:

libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_amd64.deb
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_i386.deb

  WORKAROUND (ROLLBACK TO PRIOR VERSION)

  Install older versions with:

  sudo dpkg -i \
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_amd64.deb \
libllvm5.0_5.0-3~16.04.1_i386.deb \

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-07-14 Thread Dan Aur
Hello everyone,

I'm struggling for a few days to find a solution to my problem on a ubuntu 18.04
I have tried all the suggestions on many forums, but unfortunately I have not
found a simple solution to solve this problem.

I have recently upgraded Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04 with enabling full disk
encryption and with LVM. After this upgrade, every time I'm starting the
machine, I see some messages appearing on the boot screen.

(for more details, please see the attached photo)

I need yours precious help, I hope someone help me with a simple
solution!

Please let me know,
Dan.

Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to
  device scanning.

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in initramfs-tools source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
A regression in initramfs-tools causes it to autogenerate config in the
initramfs saying to resume from any available swap devices, but references the
swap device by UUID, which is not a canonical form for referring to LVM volumes
(because of snapshotting, they are not unique). Ubiquity also generates a file
in /etc at install time which references the swap partition in the same way.
Since the lvm2 initramfs hooks also only activate precisely those LVs that are
detected as needed at boot, this adds an inappropriate 30-second boot delay to
any system with swap on LVM, which includes any desktop system that was
configured with LVM (but not full-disk encryption) at install time.

  [Test case]
  1. Install using the "Use LVM" option in the desktop installer.
  4. Reboot.
  5. Verify that dmesg shows a 30-second delay before mounting the root
filesystem.
  6. Install initramfs-tools from bionic-proposed.
  7. Reboot.
  8. Verify that dmesg no longer shows a 30-second delay before mounting the
root filesystem.
  9. Install using the bionic daily image that contains the ubiquity from
bionic-proposed.
  10. Reboot.
  11. Verify that /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is not present and that
there is no delay before mounting the root filesystem.

  [Regression potential]
This makes changes to shell scripts, and shell is a perilous language. An
unnoticed bug could cause all initramfs generation, and thus all kernel
installation, to fail for some users. A regression could also cause a user to
lose hiberation support that they currently have.

  [Original description]
After choosing "Erase disk and install ubuntu" + "Use LVM with the new Ubuntu
installation", the
system is very slow to reboot.

It shows the message : "WARNING:Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to
device scanning.",
then waits 32 seconds, then continues as it should.

I think this is a ubiquity bug, since the d-i based installer is not affected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-07-14 Thread Heiko Sieger
I ran into the same bug (30 sec boot delay) running Bionic with Mate
desktop.

The following steps solved the problem for now:

1. Edit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

2. Change as follows:
RESUME=none

3. Run
sudo update-initramfs -u

4. Reboot - no more delay
