  How can this be fixed?

  To put it simply, when the wireless router or printer is reset, it
  connects to each other no problem. Ubuntu still has the configuration
  of the printer, but all sends timeout because Ubuntu doesn't
  automatically detect the new wireless address of the printer. The only
  workaround is to delete the current settings and reinstall the printer
  so it can detect the new printer address. As a usability issue having
  to reinstall a wireless printer each time it's turned off or reset
  instead of automatically detecting the new wireless address would be a
  major turnoff to any user old or new.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1772798] Re: Unity: Force start background plugin

This is a duplicate of bug 1795145, right?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1772798

Title:
  Unity: Force start background plugin

Status in ubuntu-settings package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  If a user, already running a Gnome session upgrades or install unity
  by installing unity-session, background plugin doesn't start
  automatically (with u-s-d). This plugin has been removed from gnome-
  settings-daemon (Ubuntu carries a patch which only adds back the
  schema) and since gsd doesn't use it, it gets turned off.

  The background plugin is necessary to sync background related settings
  (wallpaper, sound, messages) with unity-greeter. If it doesn't start
  with u-s-d, changing wallpaper will not change the background of
  unity-greeter.

  The change was introduced in https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-
  settings-daemon-team/unity-settings-daemon/trunk/revision/4179

  This can be done in gsettings-override (In unity specific section)

  [org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.background:Unity]
  active = true

  Merge should happen against https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
  desktop/+junk/ubuntu-settings

  Since it's a +junk, I can't request merge proposals. I am also
  attaching the diff here.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1036001] Re: GVim tear-off menus don't work

2018-09-30 Thread Marcus Aurelius
I updated to 18.04.1 LTS and now Vim doesn't have tear-off menus
anymore. Well, that's one way of fixing the bug :-)

Title:
  GVim tear-off menus don't work

Status in vim package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The GVim text editor, as installed from the software center (I checked
  with Synaptic and its package is vim-gnome 2:7.3.429-2ubuntu2.1) has a
  bug with its tear-off menus (occurs on Xfce and KDE, not sure about
  Unity).

  Steps to reproduce:

  Open Gvim.
  Click on the Edit menu.
  Point to the Color scheme menu item (third from the bottom). A submenu will
open.
  Click on the first item of the submenu (the one that looks like
“”). The menu will become a separate window.
  Click on any menu item and notice that the color scheme of the window doesn't
change at all. It changes correctly when the menu is used normally (without
tearing it off first).

Hi Patrick, there is no other package with which to associate this bug report.
And I will look at preparing this report for the programmers.

Title:
  cups-pdf blocked by apparmor

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  cups-pdf cannot create the ~/PDF directory if it does not exist and
  fails with no indication to the user.

  It should however be pointed out that cups-pdf allows the system
  administrator to change it's output directory by changing the Out key
  in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf. As such apparmor will get in the way again
  if the admin changes the Out key to some other location outside of the
  ${HOME}/PDF directory. (It's default setting.)

  cups-pdf also does not have an #include for using local overrides in
  it's apparmor config. As such any fixes that the local admin makes
  will be overwritten by the next update to the cups package, breaking
  it again.

  Description:  Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
  Release:  16.04

  What happened:
  cups-pdf when installed for the first time fails with the following apparmor
denials:

name="/home/CODENET.LOCAL/codebase/PDF/" pid=6015 comm="cups-pdf"
requested_mask="c" denied_mask="c" fsuid=0 ouid=0

  What I expected to happen:
  cups-pdf creates the pdf file it was supposed to.

  As a workaround, I set cups-pdf to use the third-party settings from the cups
profile, then it worked as expected.

  software-properties-kde attempts to use KUrl but it doesn't exist

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Release: Kubuntu 18.04
  Version: 0.96.24.32.1

  When clicking the "Import Key" button in the "Authentication" section
  of the panel it throws this error:

  Traceback (most recent call last):

 line 667, in add_key_clicked
  url = KUrl.fromPath(home)
  NameError: name 'KUrl' is not defined

  While this doesn't crash the program it causes nothing to happen when
  clicking the button. Running the program in a terminal reveals the
  error being printed to stderr.

  After debugging it appears KUrl doesn't exist anywhere and I'm not
  sure if's a python module that has changed.

Title:
  Turn on background plugin by default (Ubuntu 18.10)

Status in ubuntu-settings package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  In https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
  settings/tree/debian/ubuntu-settings.gsettings-override#n139

  we have,

  [org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.background:ubuntu]
  active = false

  which disables the plugin. Gnome-settings-daemon doesn't use that key
  anymore (They are auto started by desktop files), But unity-settings-
  daemon now requires it to be enabled by default due to recent changes
  in lightdm and u-s-d

  Lightdm now use AccountsService extension system for extended greeter
  information (like wallpaper) used by unity-greeter

(https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/lightdm/commit/6015bce25f241e7580c03594d846769f8236232f)

  And unity-settings-daemon now depends on new AccountsService method of
  setting background file for unity greeter.
  (https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-settings-daemon-team/unity-
  settings-daemon/trunk/revision/4179)

  How-to-reproduce:
  --

  1) First disable the background plugin if it is already enabled.

  gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.sharing active
  false

  2) Change the wallpaper from unity-control-center.

  3) Log out.

  Unity-greeter should reflect the change of wallpaper.

  But it doesn't.

  4) Re-enable the background plugin.

  gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.sharing active
  true

  5) Change the wallpaper again and then log out.

  Unity-greeter now reflects the change in wallpaper properly.

  2) Change the wallpaper from unity-control-center.

  3) Log out.

  Unity-greeter should reflect the change of wallpaper.

  But it doesn't.

  4) Re-enable the background plugin.

  gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.sharing active
  true

  5) Change the wallpaper again and then log out.

  Unity-greeter now reflects the change in wallpaper properly.

Bug description:
  [Note on coordination: I'm reporting this as a security bug to both Ubuntu
  (because Ubuntu is where this policy originally comes from, and Ubuntu is also
  where AppArmor is most relevant) and Debian (because the AppArmor policy has
  been merged into Debian's version of the package). It isn't clear to me who
  really counts as upstream here...]

  Debian/Ubuntu ship with an AppArmor policy for evince, which, among other
  things, restricts evince-thumbnailer. The Ubuntu security team seems to
  incorrectly believe that this policy provides meaningful security isolation:

  https://twitter.com/alex_murray/status/1032780425834446849
  https://twitter.com/alex_murray/status/1032796879640190976

  This AppArmor policy seems to be designed to permit everything that
  evince-thumbnailer might need; however, it does not seem to be designed to
  establish a consistent security boundary around evince-thumbnailer.

  For example, read+write access to almost the entire home directory is granted:

  /usr/bin/evince-thumbnailer {
  [...]
# Lenient, but remember we still have abstractions/private-files-strict in
# effect).
@{HOME}/ r,
owner @{HOME}/** rw,
owner /media/**  rw,
  }

  As the comment notes, a couple files are excluded to prevent you from just
  overwriting well-known executable scripts in the user's home directory, like
  ~/.bashrc:

  [...]
# don't allow reading/updating of run control files
deny @{HOME}/.*rc mrk,
audit deny @{HOME}/.*rc wl,

# bash
deny @{HOME}/.bash* mrk,
audit deny @{HOME}/.bash* wl,
deny @{HOME}/.inputrc mrk,
audit deny @{HOME}/.inputrc wl,
  [...]

  Verification:

  user@ubuntu-18-04-vm:~$ cat preload2.c
  #define _GNU_SOURCE
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  __attribute__((constructor)) static void entry(void) {
printf("constructor running from %s\n", program_invocation_name);
int fd = open("/home/user/.bashrc", O_WRONLY);
if (fd != -1) {
  printf("success\n");
} else {
  perror("open .bashrc");
}
exit(0);
  }
  user@ubuntu-18-04-vm:~$ sudo gcc -shared -o
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libevil_preload.so preload2.c -fPIC
  user@ubuntu-18-04-vm:~$
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libevil_preload.so evince-thumbnailer
  constructor running from evince-thumbnailer
  open .bashrc: Permission denied
  user@ubuntu-18-04-vm:~$ dmesg|tail -n1
  [ 6900.355399] audit: type=1400 audit(1535126396.280:113): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="open" profile="/usr/bin/evince-thumbnailer"
name="/home/user/.bashrc" pid=4807 comm="evince-thumbnai" requested_mask="w"
denied_mask="w" fsuid=1000 ouid=1000

  But of course blacklists are brittle and often trivially bypassable. For
  example, did you know that it is possible to override the system's
thumbnailers
  by dropping .thumbnailer files in ~/.local/share/ ? .thumbnailer files contain
  command lines that will be executed by nautilus. To demonstrate that it is
  possible to create .thumbnailer files from evince-thumbnailer:

  user@ubuntu-18-04-vm:~$ ls -la .local/share/thumbnailers/
  ls: cannot access '.local/share/thumbnailers/': No such file or directory
  user@ubuntu-18-04-vm:~$ cat preload3.c
  #define _GNU_SOURCE
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include
  __attribute__((constructor)) static void entry(void) {
printf("constructor running from %s\n", program_invocation_name);
if (mkdir("/home/user/.local/share/thumbnailers", 0777) && errno != EEXIST)
  err(1, "mkdir");
FILE *f = fopen("/home/user/.local/share/thumbnailers/evil.thumbnailer",
"w");
if (!f)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1791367] Re: [FFe]: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not working in gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic 18.10)

2018-09-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Well, testing whether an upgrade fixes it on the Asus machine would
help, of course. Then we would know if the conclusion at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/issues/90 is
correct.

Title:
  [FFe]: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not
  working in gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic
  18.10)

Status in xkeyboard-config package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  To the release team: Asking for FFe since it appears to be a good idea
  to fix this bug through an upgrade to latest version of xkeyboard-
  config rather than just patching a single upstream commit.

  Proposal available at https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu
  /xkeyboard-config

  [Original description]

  Please forgive if filed for wrong package. Problem occurs in X and
  Wayland sessions but not on console, so does not seem to be kernel.

  Repro on Asus UX561UD with Ubuntu 18.10 up to date:
  1. Log into Gnome X or Gnome Wayland session
  2. Press Fn+F2 which is the airplane mode key

  -> Airplane mode should turn on but nothing happens

  3. Switch to console with Ctrl+Alt+F3
  4. Log into console
  5. Press Fn+F2 again
  6. Switch back to GUI session with Ctrl+Alt+F2

  -> Airplane mode is on, icon appeared in Gnome task bar

  Same for turning it off.

  No difference when booting 18.04.1 live image

  This laptop seems not the only one with this problem. I got the idea for
trying the console trick from ArenaL5's answer on Askubuntu, but unfortunately
there is no solution there:
  https://askubuntu.com/questions/972367/airplane-mode-switch-does-not-respond

  Please let me know whatever I can do to help debug this.

  All other Fn+Fx special keys on this laptop work (display brightness,
  touchpad off, sound etc.) except for keyboard backlight, but that
  works with Ubuntu 18.04.1 and I will file a separate bug for this

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1792758] Re: Unity Launcher icons replaced by ?

2018-09-30 Thread Jeremy Bicha
My understanding is that this was a bug in glib2.0 which is now fixed.

** Package changed: unity (Ubuntu) => glib2.0 (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: glib2.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

Title:
  Unity Launcher icons replaced by ?

Status in glib2.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  For a couple days now, on 18.10 fully updated, upon starting an app from the
Unity launcher, the icon is replaced by a question mark.
  Logging out and back in brings the icons back, but they are replaced by the ?
icon as soon as I launch an app.
  I tried running "unity --reset-icons" which changed my icon theme to what I
guess is the new theme, but problem is still present.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1795242] [NEW] Digicert certificate is not included

2018-09-30 Thread Stan Janssen
Public bug reported:

The "DigiCert High Assurance EV Root CA" certificate is missing, which
means that the system does not trust web sites that are using SSL
certificates signed by that root. An example is a popular website in the
Netherlands https://marktplaats.nl. The result is that no resources
other that the text-only homepage is loaded.

Installing the Digicert root certificte manually from Digicert solves
the problem:

```
wget https://dl.cacerts.digicert.com/DigiCertSHA2SecureServerCA.crt
mv DigiCertSHA2SecureServerCA.crt DigiCertSHA2SecureServerCA.der
openssl x509 -inform DER -outform PEM -in DigiCertSHA2SecureServerCA.der  -out
DigicertSHA2SecureServerCA.pem.crt
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/ca-certificates/extra
sudo cp DigicertSHA2SecureServerCA.pem.crt /usr/share/ca-certificates/extra/
sudo dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates
```

Maybe there is a valid reason for not including this certificate by
default, or maybe this certificate can be included by default, since it
seems like it's assumed to be included on every machine.

** Affects: ca-certificates (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1791367] Re: [FFe]: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not working in gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic 18.10)

Title:
  [FFe]: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not
  working in gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic
  18.10)

Status in xkeyboard-config package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  To the release team: Asking for FFe since it appears to be a good idea
  to fix this bug through an upgrade to latest version of xkeyboard-
  config rather than just patching a single upstream commit.

  Proposal available at https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu
  /xkeyboard-config

  [Original description]

  Please forgive if filed for wrong package. Problem occurs in X and
  Wayland sessions but not on console, so does not seem to be kernel.

  Repro on Asus UX561UD with Ubuntu 18.10 up to date:
  1. Log into Gnome X or Gnome Wayland session
  2. Press Fn+F2 which is the airplane mode key

  -> Airplane mode should turn on but nothing happens

  3. Switch to console with Ctrl+Alt+F3
  4. Log into console
  5. Press Fn+F2 again
  6. Switch back to GUI session with Ctrl+Alt+F2

  -> Airplane mode is on, icon appeared in Gnome task bar

  Same for turning it off.

  No difference when booting 18.04.1 live image

  This laptop seems not the only one with this problem. I got the idea for
trying the console trick from ArenaL5's answer on Askubuntu, but unfortunately
there is no solution there:
  https://askubuntu.com/questions/972367/airplane-mode-switch-does-not-respond

  Please let me know whatever I can do to help debug this.

  All other Fn+Fx special keys on this laptop work (display brightness,
  touchpad off, sound etc.) except for keyboard backlight, but that
  works with Ubuntu 18.04.1 and I will file a separate bug for this

Title:
  Computer won't suspend, DBUS reports that a suspend or shutdown
  operation already in progress

Status in dbus package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  After a fresh boot computer suspends fine, however further attempts to
  suspend result in failure with the above mentioned error message. When
  that happens, shutdown doesn't work either; shutdown process gets
  stuck at some point and I must forcibly turn off or reset the
  computer. Sometimes the shutdown almost completes, but THEN the
  computer enters suspend, after which I must wake it up to complete
  shutdown.
