[Touch-packages] [Bug 1827791] Re: Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen and input freezes / hangs temporarily

2019-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt

you have then please uninstall them all, reboot and retest.

Title:
Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen and input freezes / hangs temporarily

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello,

  I have a new 2019 Dell XPS 13 (9380). I ordered the official Ubuntu
edition from Dell which came with 18.04. I then upgraded it to 18.10
for a short while, before wiping it and installing 19.04 from a fresh
ISO download after that was released. This is the non-touch non-4K
version (13-inch 1080p). I have the i7 model with 16GB of RAM and an
NVMe SSD (so the performance should be pretty good).

Sometimes when typing in Gnome Terminal, the screen just freezes for
around 1 second. The cursor doesn't move, additional keypresses don't
appear, and any moving content doesn't update. After the freeze stops,
all the keypresses that occurred during the freeze do appear (they're
not lost). Immediately after the freeze, I don't see anything in dmesg
output that gives a clue. It almost feels how some old desktops did
around 10-15 years ago when everything would lock up while waiting for
slow HDD I/O, and then suddenly keypresses etc. would catch-up.

If there is something specific I should look for immediately after a
freeze in order to debug further, please let me know.

Note that this happens both on battery power but also when plugged
  into the charger.

Someone else on AskUbuntu asked this question for the same model
(9380), which sounds very similar to what I'm seeing on mine (the
  freezing part): https://askubuntu.com/questions/1133191/ubuntu-18-04
  -on-dell-xps-9380-small-freezes-and-jumping-touchpad

  Note that I filed
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1827790 for what I
think is a separate issue related to screen flashing (as opposed to
freezing). The two events do not seem to happen at the same time which
is why I've filed them separately.

Dell XPS 13 9380 flickering (Whiskey Lake)

Title:
  Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen flashes

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,

  I have a new 2019 Dell XPS 13 (9380). I ordered the official Ubuntu
edition from Dell which came with 18.04, but I've since wiped it and
installed 19.04 from a fresh ISO download. This is the non-touch non-
  4K version (13-inch 1080p).

Every so often (maybe a couple of times per minute), the screen
flashes brighter, as if the brightness has been turned up momentarily
  and then back down again.

I previously had an issue with the brightness / colours changing
slightly when I opened menus or if the screen content changed
slightly, but I fixed that by disabling Dynamic Brightness in the
BIOS. It is definitely a better experience with that turned off.

However the screen flashing still persists.

I booted a live image of Fedora 30 now that it has been released, and
so far I have not seen the screen flashing, so I do not think the
  hardware is faulty.

I ran apport-bug, so hopefully the collected information has been
  attached.

  Thank you.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1827354] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop reports error on startup

2019-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

Assuming this is the only crash:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/44e474d4-6ede-11e9-9306-fa163e6cac46

then this is a bug in aptd.

Bug description:
When you have been playing a subtitled mkv file for a while and try to
load a new subtitled mkv file in the same instance of Totem, the UI
  freezes.

You must let the video play for a while for the problem to manifest. I
don't know how long exactly, but ten minutes should do it. Loading
file after file in quick succession works fine, and it doesn't happen
if you seek forward in the file to go to a later time in the video.
You have to actually watch the video for a while for it to happen.

This problem has been in Totem for the past several versions of
Ubuntu, but in 19.04 the problem has slightly changed: Totem used to
become completely unresponsive and you had to force quit it, but in
19.04 you can click the close button and it closes immediately. Other
than that, the problem is the same: all you get is a frozen black
  screen.

This problem could affect other file formats as well, but subtitled
Matroska files is what I've personally been affected by.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1819615] Re: For additional hardware support, modemmanager needs to be upgraded to 1.10 on Bionic

2019-05-05 Thread yparitcher

Status in modemmanager source package in Bionic:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * The new modemmanager package adds DW5820e and DW5821 support.
   * This modemmanager version is needed to support new devices.

  [Test Case]

   * install modemmanager, libmbim, and libqmi from -proposed
   * reboot and try WWAN function to see if any regression there.
   * perform general dogfooding of its reverse dependencies (network-
     manager, gnome-control-center etc.)

  [Regression Potential]

   * The package comes from Disco and should not have regression there.
   * Every new upstream release can potentially break existing dependencies
if any of the required features have been changed/removed, so besides
regular testing a general dogfooding session with the new modemmanager
     is advised.

  [Original Description]

To have Bionic, the current LTS, working with as wide of a range of
modems as possible we need to have it upgraded to the current 1.10
versions. Also the underlying libraries need to get upgraded
  appropriately.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822270] Re: Debconf readline frontend does not show options

Bug description:
  [Impact]
debconf prompts the user for input before displaying options

  [Description]
When upgrading packages with apt or dpkg, debconf scripts are ran through
'run-parts' with the '--report' flag. This causes script output to be handled
through pipes set up by run-parts, and buffers output from maintainer scripts
nicely for formatting.

If debconf makes use of the readline frontend, any prompts will bypass
the run-parts buffers and be displayed directly to /dev/tty. This
generally causes the prompt to be displayed before the user gets any
of the available options for it, and printing will block until the
  user inputs a valid option.

  [Test Case]
  1) Deploy a VM through e.g. uvt-kvm
  $ uvt-kvm create disco release=disco

  2) Remove the whiptail package to force the readline frontend in debconf
root@disco:~# apt remove --purge whiptail -y

  3) Install grub-legacy-ec2 and prepare /boot/grub/menu.lst for an upgrade
through run-parts
  root@disco:~# apt update && apt install -y grub-legacy-ec2
  root@disco:~# rm -f /boot/grub/menu.lst*
  root@disco:~# touch -d "4 years ago" /boot/grub/menu.lst

  4) Invoke run-parts as in a kernel upgrade (kernel version doesn't matter, we
just need it to think menu.lst needs an upgrade)
  root@disco:~# run-parts --exit-on-error --arg=5.0.0 /etc/kernel/postinst.d
--report
  ...
  /etc/kernel/postinst.d/x-grub-legacy-ec2:
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog
debconf: (No usable dialog-like program is installed, so the dialog based
frontend cannot be used. at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Dialog.pm line
76.)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
What would you like to do about menu.lst?

The "What would you like to do about menu.lst?" prompt will block
until the user enter a valid option, even though it's being displayed
  before the available options.

  [Regression Potential]
We could hit regressions if changing debconf's printing to /dev/tty is
expected by other programs. The changes are needed only in the readline
frontend, so that would minimize impact of any possible regressions. The fixes
will be thoroughly tested with autopkgtest and use-case scenarios.

  # # # #

  [Original Description]
When upgrading the kernel on a recent Bionic minimal image, the user is
prompted to resolve a conflict in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst.

The minimal images do not have dialog/whiptail installed, so debconf
falls back to using the readline frontend.

The user sees the prompt: "What would you like to do about menu.lst?"
but is not presented with the list of options to choose from.

If a valid option is typed in, debconf will continue processing
correctly and the list of options appears on the screen. See also
  https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/8xvSn88SKG/

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Launch the minimal Bionic image with serial 20190212 http://cloud-
  images.ubuntu.com/minimal/releases/bionic/release-20190212/ubuntu-18.04
  -minimal-cloudimg-amd64.img

for example via multipass and run `apt-get update` and `apt-get dist-
  upgrade`.

Bug description:
Trying to use the impress remote
  (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Impress_Remote) over bluetooth
with libreoffice over ubuntu bionic fails.

The handset errors out that it cannot connect with Libreoffice on the
computer even if the bluetooth adapter on the handset and on the
  computer are correctly paired.

This does not seem to be an issue in the Libreoffice or in the impress
  remote code:

  - I have tested also past LibO versions
  - The Impress remote codebase has not changed recently

This used to work on the same hardware (headset and laptop) with
  ubuntu 16.04.

Hence the issue seems to be in a regression in the ubuntu bluetooth
  stack.

  To replicate:

  1) Install Libreoffice on Ubuntu bionic (either from the ubuntu repo
or with the deb packages from the document fundation)

  2) Assure that your computer has bluetooth

  3) Install impress remote on an android handset (either from the play
  store of via fdroid)

  4) Assure that "remote control" is enabled in impress
  Tools>Options>Impress>General

  5) Pair the bluetooth adapters in the laptop and in the computer

  6) Open a presentation on the laptop

  7) Open the remote on the handset, got to the bluetooth pane see the
  computer there, touch it

  8) See the impress remote erroring out

Most likely you will also get a bluetooth error on dmesg

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1827791] [NEW] Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen and input freezes / hangs temporarily

2019-05-05 Thread Djcater
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I have a new 2019 Dell XPS 13 (9380). I ordered the official Ubuntu
edition from Dell which came with 18.04. I then upgraded it to 18.10 for
a short while, before wiping it and installing 19.04 from a fresh ISO
download after that was released. This is the non-touch non-4K version
(13-inch 1080p). I have the i7 model with 16GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD
(so the performance should be pretty good).

Note that this happens both on battery power but also when plugged into
the charger.

Someone else on AskUbuntu asked this question for the same model (9380),
which sounds very similar to what I'm seeing on mine (the freezing
part): https://askubuntu.com/questions/1133191/ubuntu-18-04-on-dell-
xps-9380-small-freezes-and-jumping-touchpad

Note that I filed
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1827790 for what I
think is a separate issue related to screen flashing (as opposed to
freezing). The two events do not seem to happen at the same time which
is why I've filed them separately.

  Hi!

After last updated libcurl3 on libcurl4, system (Kubuntu 18.04 bionic)
deleted such applications as:

I really need these applications, I installed them with broken

#metoo !

14.04 is about to go out of support, I think a lot of people will
attempt to upgrade their base AMI from 14.04 to 16.04

at least, that's my case.

if this 3 years old bug still unassigned. does this mean this upgrade
path from LTS to LTS is not possible ?!?
