[Touch-packages] [Bug 1829872] Re: No more desktop effects since libdrm upgrade in Bionic

2019-06-06 Thread Timo Aaltonen
note that there were no changes to the radeon code in the libdrm update,
so blaming the regression on it is weird, I'd suggest to look at KDE
instead

  No more desktop effects since libdrm upgrade in Bionic

  Hello.

  I upgraded my system on 2019-05-09 and since then desktop effects do not work
anymore. It installed
  a new libdrm stack :

  I have an ATI Radeon that was working fine with KDE until then. I waited to
see if someone had realized it before creating a bug report... It really is
annoying : no more transparency, no
  more auto-hide of windows : my workflow is strongly impacted.

2019-06-06 Thread Timo Aaltonen
run 'apport-collect 1829872'

And it took almost two weeks for you to notice this after the upgrade?
You still have the old libdrm available in the archive btw, does
downgrade do anything?

  systemd-resolved ignores /etc/network/interfaces on Ubuntu 18.04

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  dns-nameservers entry in /etc/network/interfaces is ignored by
  systemd-resolved-- all of the other settings work, which adds quite a
  bit of confusion and frustration since Ubuntu recently switched to
  using netplan.

  It would be a **VERY** good idea to add a comment at the top of
/etc/network/interfaces that this file is now deprecated, and provide
information about the new netplan utility. Something similar was done to
/etc/resolv.conf years back.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831959] Re: [nouveau] The screen froze

2019-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
1. Please reproduce the problem again, then reboot and run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

   and send us the file 'prevboot.txt'.

2. Your computer seems to be in recovery mode with low quality graphics
mode enabled. If this is not intentional then please reboot and hold
down shift before the purple screen appears. Then navigate through the
menus and choose a normal kernel to boot that is not recovery mode.

  Note on oibaf-ppa: the same happens also with the standard repository
  packages and using this PPA was an attempt to fix the problem.

  I can reproduce this bug in Minecraft (see attached screenshot),
  Stellarium, and in Firefox with the page https://deck.gl/#/examples
  /core-layers/geojson-layer-paths

  I tried all combinations of graphics drivers. fbdev finally used
  software rendering (I think it was llvmpipe), which worked correct at
  the expense of a very low frame rate.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831903] Re: Microphone audio pitch changes sometimes

2019-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Alan,

Can you please wait till the problem happens again and then collect the
most recent system log immediately after that?

  journalctl -b0 > curjournal.txt

Then attach 'curjournal.txt'.

P.S. Your CPU temperature is exceeding the threshold and being throttled
a lot, FYI. But that's probably not related to this bug.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822776] Re: Apply Bash 4.4.20 to fix cpu spinning on built-in wait

Title:
  Apply Bash 4.4.20 to fix cpu spinning on built-in wait

Status in bash package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in bash source package in Bionic:
  In Progress
Status in bash source package in Cosmic:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Long running bash loops that create and reap processes will crash,
  hanging at 100% CPU.

  [Test Case]

  Run this loop for a few days/weeks:

    #!/bin/bash
    while true; do
  sleep 0.5 &
  wait
    done

  It will eventually cause the 'wait' statement to hang, consuming 100%
  after some indeterminate amount of time, dependent on how fast PIDs
  are cycled in the machine.

  The Bash bug report mentions longer running loops, but it seems hash
  collisions are the cause, meaning it's just a matter of chance,
  influenced by how fast PIDs are cycled on the machine.

  [Regression Potential]

  The fix has been reviewed and accepted upstream. The patch adds a
  test at time of pid determination for if the pid is already in use and
  if so, skip it and pick a different one. This does change behavior
  slightly in that different pid numbers will be generated in rare
  cases, but nothing should depend on how pids are generated, as the
  behavior is not specified to be anything but random.

  The patch adds a new warning message, "bgp_delete: LOOP: psi (%d) ==
  storage[psi].bucket_next", but this only shows when the original bug
  would have been triggered.

  Using 'apt-get source bash' to get the original source version, I
  created a deb that includes the 4.4.20 patch and have been running it
  since April 2nd. The 100% CPU spinning is solved, and no other
  regressions have been observed.

  Ubuntu 18.04 is already at 4.4.19, which is one patch level behind, so
  this involves linearly progressing to the next version (so not
  skipping patches).

  [Fix]

  Official patch to fix, and to bump to 4.4.20:

  http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-4.4-patches/bash44-020

  The newest Ubuntu tar.xz with patches I could find at:

  http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/b/bash/

  also didn't have the 4.4.20 patch, so it seems no Ubuntu release has
  the fix yet.

  Although not completely sure, this problem seems to have been
  introduced in the 4.4 version of Bash, so in term of LTS versions,
  18.04 and up are affected.

  [Original Report]
  Bash pre-4.4.20 has a bug in its PID hash table that causes spin-loops when
spawning sub processes and waiting for them. There is a fix:

  https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-4.4-patches/bash44-020

  Our application started being affected (locking up) by this since
  migrating from Ubuntu 14.04 to 18.04. Ubuntu 14.04 has bash 4.3.11(1),
  Ubuntu 18.04 has bash 4.4.19 (that is, when running 'bash --version',
  because of their unusual versions as patches, apt shows it as
  4.4.18-2ubuntu1).

  The 4.4-020 version needs to be included. I think it's actually quite
  critical.

  A justification for including the fix would be that a standard
  language feature in a script language is broken, and that it's
  indeterminate when it breaks. Considering the wide spread use of bash,
  I'm surprised not more people have reported issues. My and a client
  started having issues with independently of each other very soon after
  upgrading to an affected version.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1827172] Re: update-rc.d: enabling or disabling S runlevel services incorrectly modifies runlevel

2019-06-06 Thread Matthew Ruffell

Title:
  update-rc.d: enabling or disabling S runlevel services incorrectly
  modifies runlevel

Status in sysvinit package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in sysvinit source package in Trusty:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * update-rc.d, in sysv-rc-2.88dsf-41ubuntu6.3 is broken in trusty.

   * update-rc.d incorrectly modifies symlinks when enabling or disabling
     services which are started on the "S" runlevel.

   * This can lead to services being changed from S runlevel from where they
     would be started on boot, to "0" runlevel, and are run on halt, which is
     incorrect.

   * The bug is caused by trying to use the runlevel to index into an integer
     array of runlevels. When the runlevel in question is "S", an error is
     printed

     Argument "S" isn't numeric in array element at /usr/sbin/update-rc.d line
     232.

     Perl then sets the index to default to 0, which changes the
  runlevel.

   * The fix is to check if the runlevel is "S", and if it is, set the index to
     99 which conforms with other expected usages for the "S" runlevel in the
     script. See the "startstop" and "makelinks" subroutines.

  [Test Case]

  * You can reproduce this with any service that is started on the "S"
    runlevel. We will use open-iscsi for an example.

  1) Install open-iscsi

  $ sudo apt install open-iscsi

  2) Check to see symlinks for init.d scripts are set to defaults:

  root@trusty-openiscsi:/etc# ls -l /etc/rc[0123456S].d/*iscsi*
  /etc/rc0.d/K80umountiscsi.sh -> ../init.d/umountiscsi.sh
  /etc/rc0.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc1.d/K80umountiscsi.sh -> ../init.d/umountiscsi.sh
  /etc/rc1.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc6.d/K80umountiscsi.sh -> ../init.d/umountiscsi.sh
  /etc/rc6.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rcS.d/S45open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi

  3) Use update-rc.d to enable open-iscsi service

  root@trusty-openiscsi:/etc# update-rc.d open-iscsi enable
  update-rc.d: warning: start runlevel arguments (none) do not match open-iscsi
Default-Start values (S)
  update-rc.d: warning: stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match open-iscsi
Default-Stop values (0 1 6)
  Argument "S" isn't numeric in array element at /usr/sbin/update-rc.d line 232.
  Enabling system startup links for /etc/init.d/open-iscsi ...
  Removing any system startup links for /etc/init.d/open-iscsi ...
  /etc/rc0.d/K81open-iscsi
  /etc/rc1.d/K81open-iscsi
  /etc/rc6.d/K81open-iscsi
  /etc/rcS.d/S45open-iscsi
  Adding system startup for /etc/init.d/open-iscsi ...
  /etc/rc0.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc1.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc6.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc0.d/S45open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi

  * The problem is the "/etc/rcS.d/S45open-iscsi" symlink is incorrectly
    changed to "/etc/rc0.d/S45open-iscsi".

  * Instead, the correct behaviour is to keep the symlink in /etc/rcS.d/
    intact:

  root@trusty-openiscsi:/etc# update-rc.d open-iscsi enable
  update-rc.d: warning: start runlevel arguments (none) do not match open-iscsi
Default-Start values (S)
  update-rc.d: warning: stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match open-iscsi
Default-Stop values (0 1 6)
  Enabling system startup links for /etc/init.d/open-iscsi ...
  Removing any system startup links for /etc/init.d/open-iscsi ...
  /etc/rc0.d/K81open-iscsi
  /etc/rc1.d/K81open-iscsi
  /etc/rc6.d/K81open-iscsi
  /etc/rcS.d/S45open-iscsi
  Adding system startup for /etc/init.d/open-iscsi ...
  /etc/rc0.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc1.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rc6.d/K81open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi
  /etc/rcS.d/S45open-iscsi -> ../init.d/open-iscsi

  [Regression Potential]

   * There is only one file modified, which is the update-rc.d perl script.
     Worst case scenario is that users cannot enable or disable their services,
     or a symlink is changed such that a service is started / stopped on an
     incorrect runlevel.

   * If a regression happens, any damage should be easily spotted by a
     sysadmin and can be manually repaired by making manual symlinks with
     "ln -s".

   * I have built and tested the change in a PPA, which you can find here:
 https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sysvinit-testing

   * My only cause for concern is that if a regression does happen, it may
 impact packages that run "update-rc.d [en|dis]able" in a
 postinstall

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1754671] Re: Full-tunnel VPN DNS leakage regression

2019-06-06 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have checked again on Bionic, making sure that the installed systemd
actually comes from the bionic-proposed repository, that the behavior
according to the test case shown in the initial description of this bug
is correct, DNS queries of destinations in the VPN done through the
VPN's DNS and DNS queries to public destinations being done through the
public DNS.

This works correctly and so the systemd update together with the
network-manager update fixes the bug described here. So I am marking
this bug as verified in Bionic.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  When using a VPN the DNS requests might still be sent to a DNS server outside
the VPN when they should not

  [Test case]
  1) Set up a VPN with split tunneling:
a) Configure VPN normally (set up remote host, any ports and options needed
for the VPN to work)
b) Under the IPv4 tab: enable "Use this connection only for the resources
on its network".
c) Under the IPv6 tab: enable "Use this connection only for the resources
on its network".

  2) Connect to the VPN.

  3) Run 'systemd-resolve --status'; note the DNS servers configured:
a) For the VPN; under a separate link (probably tun0), note down the IP of
the DNS server(s). Also note the name of the interface (link).
b) For the "main" connection; under the link for your ethernet or wireless
devices (wl*, en*, whatever it may be), note down the IP of the DNS server(s).
Also note the name of the interface (link).

  4) In a separate terminal, run 'sudo tcpdump -ni
  port 53'; let it run.

  5) In a separate terminal, run 'sudo tcpdump -ni
  port 53'; let it run.

  6) In yet another terminal, issue name resolution requests using dig:
a) For a name known to be reachable via the public network:
   'dig www.yahoo.com'
b) For a name known to be reachable only via the VPN:
   'dig '

  7) Check the output of each terminal running tcpdump. When requesting
  the public name, traffic can go through either. When requesting the
  "private" name (behind the VPN), traffic should only be going through
  the interface for the VPN. Additionally, ensure the IP receiving the
  requests for the VPN name is indeed the IP address noted above for the
  VPN's DNS server.

  If you see no traffic showing in tcpdump output when requesting a
  name, it may be because it is cached by systemd-resolved. Use a
  different name you have not tried before.

  [Regression potential]
  The code change the handling of DNS servers when using a VPN, we should check
that name resolution still work whne using a VPN in different configurations

  -

  In 16.04 the NetworkManager package used to carry this patch:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~network-manager/network-manager/ubuntu/view/head:/debian/patches/Filter-DNS-servers-to-add-to-dnsmasq-based-on-availa.patch

  It fixed the DNS setup so that when I'm on the VPN, I am not sending
  unencrypted DNS queries to the (potentially hostile) local
  nameservers.

  This patch disappeared in an update. I think it was present in
  1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 but was dropped some time later.

  This security bug exists upstream too:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746422
  It's not a *regression* there though, as they didn't fix it yet
(unfortunately!)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1607874] Re: package sysv-rc 2.88dsf-59.3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2019-06-06 Thread tuxayo
Hi, I upgraded a Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 and got many failed packages
configurations during the upgrade. It's likely due to this.

After the upgrade, *before rebooting*, I did

dpkg --configure --pending

remaining errors were on linux-* packages and initramsfs-tools, still
not rebooted.

I removed old packages from kernel 3.13 that where still here and caused
failures on microcode

dpkg --configure -a
issue with casper-memdisk

Removed it:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/624519/upgrade-from-14-04-to-15-04-fails/635679#635679
sudo dpkg -P casper-memdisk

dpkg --configure -a
success

reboot, doesn't boot

grub => failsafe
in menu select => continue normal boot (actually that's not a normal boot, I
guess things like nomodeset have been added)
boot success

To be continued: to be able to normally boot. But I hope that these
details can help someone else. (disclaimer: I might have done something
stupid ^^")

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1784796] Re: apt update fails - 'std::runtime_error' what(): random_device::__x86_rdrand(void)

2019-06-06 Thread David Haggett
In my case, it was happening on a headless server so lots of keyboard
access isn't an option. I actually fixed it on my system by reversing a
change to a BIOS setting which I had initially changed to work around
the same issue on a previous occurrence.

The setting on my system related to the execute disable bit.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831150] Re: only user.* extended attributes restored upon extraction

2019-06-06 Thread Brian Murray
After discussing this with upstream it became clear that the
documentation is incorrect and it is deliberate that only the "user.*"
extended attributes are applied by default during extraction.

"This decision was done because only user.* attributes are 100% safe to
extract. The security.* (especially capabilities) can have some binary
format specific to the box creating the archive but incompatible with host
extracting the archive."

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2019-06/msg1.html

The man for tar should be updated to reflect that to avoid any
confusion.

  uses "--xattrs-include=*" then the security.capability extended
  attributes will be restored.

  [Test Case]
  mkdir orig restore
  touch orig/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr
  setcap cap_net_raw=p orig/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr
  (eoan-amd64)root@impulse:/tmp# getfattr -m . -d
orig/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr
  # file: orig/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr
  security.capability=0sAgAgAAA=
  user.testkey="testvalue"
  (eoan-amd64)root@impulse:/tmp# tar c --xattrs --acls --directory orig/ . |
tar x --xattrs --acls --directory restore/
  (eoan-amd64)root@impulse:/tmp# getfattr -m . -d
restore/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr

restore/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr
  # file: restore/file_with_capability_and_user_xattr
  security.capability=0sAgAgAAA=
  user.testkey="testvalue"

  I think tar's extract behavior should be changed to match that of
  create so that all names are actually extracted.

few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  These are needed for 18.04.3 images.

  [Test case]

  Boot a daily image, see that it still has the necessary stack
  installed and working.

  Check upgrade from stock bionic.

  [Regression potential]

  libdrm: very minimal chance for regressions

  llvm-8: a new package, no regression potential on it's own

  libclc: more or less just adds support for new llvm

  mesa: a new major release, but we'll pull the final stable release of
  19.0.x series, so there shouldn't be any regressions left at that
  point

  xserver: a new minor release

  xorg drivers: modest updates, mainly just new ati/amdgpu

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831747] Re: fixrtc hook requires e2fsprogs package, but that is not a dependency

Title:
  fixrtc hook requires e2fsprogs package, but that is not a dependency

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Package "initramfs-tools-core" provides "/usr/share/initramfs-
  tools/hooks/fixrtc" which runs during the update or regeneration of
  the initramfs and requires the file "/sbin/dumpe2fs" (available from
  "e2fsprogs") to be present, otherwise it fails and aborts the whole
  process, leading e.g. to an inconsistent package system.

  The problem/cause seems to be that "initramfs-tools-core" package has
  no direct or indirect hard dependency on "e2fsprogs".

  I believe either the package dependency should be added, or the fixrtc
  hook script should be rewritten so that it just outputs a warning
  instead of aborting with a failure if missing "dumpe2fs" is not a
  critical problem.

  This issue seems to affect at least Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04. It has

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  These are needed for 18.04.3 images.

  [Test case]

  Boot a daily image, see that it still has the necessary stack
  installed and working.

  Check upgrade from stock bionic.

  [Regression potential]

  libdrm: very minimal chance for regressions

  llvm-8: a new package, no regression potential on it's own

  libclc: more or less just adds support for new llvm

  mesa: a new major release, but we'll pull the final stable release of
  19.0.x series, so there shouldn't be any regressions left at that
  point

  xserver: a new minor release

  xorg drivers: modest updates, mainly just new ati/amdgpu

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1824111] Please test proposed package

2019-06-06 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Timo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xserver-xorg-video-ati-hwe-18.04 into bionic-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati-
hwe-18.04/1:19.0.1-0ubuntu1~18.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

  Please provide option to continue bug report from different computer

Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  There are some situations where it is desirable to gather debugging
  information on a system affected by a bug, but to login (to
  Launchpad/Ubuntu SSO) and complete editing this bug report from a
  different system.

  This is already implemented for situations where the affected system
  runs headless, i.e. servers without a graphical display. However, this
  should also be a user choice exposed as a command line option to
  ubuntu-bug (which, at least according to --help it currently is not).

  A common use case where this would be nice to have is testing software
  in a VM, but not wanting to expose Ubuntu SSO credentials to this VM
  (e.g. for security concerns). Another use case is a need to report a
  serious bug in the default web browser where this web browser is
  unable to access any websites.

  There is a workaround:
DISPLAY= ubuntu-bug somepackage
  Unfortunately this means the debugging data collection phase will provide a
text-only UI instead of the nicer / more user-friendly GTK one.

  So far, everything is fine. But, the routes on the machine are bogus:

  # ip r

  172.16.0.0/24 dev eno1np0 proto kernel scope link src 172.16.0.2

  routes with src 10.0.15.109 should have been removed when lease was
  renewed. I'm not sure if this is a bug in netplan or systemd. This is
  18.04, systemd 37-3ubuntu10.21, netplan 0.40.1~18.04.4.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831351] Re: Please provide option to continue bug report from different computer

2019-06-06 Thread Tom Reynolds
Thanks for explaning that it is possible to create a bug report on one
system, then manually copy it to another computer where the bug report
can then be submitted using ubuntu-bug.

This is not exactly as convenient as being able to run apport on one
system to gather debugging info, submit this to Launchpad (but not
create the bug, yet), then access the URL printed from another computer
which then allows for SSO authentication and bug submission from this
other computer. So a bit of a different use case, too.

But, yes, it is mostly nice-to-have - (not having reviewed the code) it
just seems like it should be easy to implement since this is what
ubuntu-bug already does when it is unable to create its GUI.

Title:
  Please provide option to continue bug report from different computer

Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

DISPLAY= ubuntu-bug somepackage
  Unfortunately this means the debugging data collection phase will provide a
text-only UI instead of the nicer / more user-friendly GTK one.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831498] Re: radeonsi: GTK elements become invisible in some applications (GIMP, LibreOffice)

2019-06-06 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Timo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mesa into disco-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/19.0.2-1ubuntu1.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-disco to verification-done-disco. If it does not fix
the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag
to verification-failed-disco. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

So, I think we want to do that for apt-daily.service which does the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831903] [NEW] Microphone audio pitch changes sometimes

2019-06-06 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

For a little while now on my KDE Neon (based on Ubuntu 18.04) system,
while I'm talking to someone my voice will suddenly drop in pitch.
People have likened it to "Barry White" mode because my voice sounds
like his.

This can happen in Mumble, on a hangout, using riot or pretty much any
audio recording app.

Killing pulseaudio to restart it, works around the issue. However it
sometimes comes back minutes later. It's quite common having this - but
I use my microphone more than most users as I record podcasts, do live
YouTube videos and have constant audio/video meetings with people.

I have only seen this happen on 18.04 based systems, both this KDE Neon
and my main Ubuntu 18.04 rig. Since updating that rig to 19.10 I've not
seen the issue. So I suspect it's something strange in pulseaudio in

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1784796] Re: apt update fails - 'std::runtime_error' what(): random_device::__x86_rdrand(void)

2019-06-06 Thread Julian Andres Klode
This should really only be an issue early during boot, or if you require
a lot of randomness. So I guess wait, use your keyboard a lot, generate
a lot of network traffic? Or manually inject randomness? I don't really
know, and it's out of scope for the bug report to discuss this - you
might want to ask in one of the user support channels (forums, irc,
mailing lists).

Any recommendation how to update if you can't update due to this bug?

"apt update" will always fail, so no matter if it's a kernel or apt
update I need, I won't get it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1831765] Re: Privilege Separation Directory default

2019-06-06 Thread Paride Legovini
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I think the description of the problem your are facing
and the workaround you found are missing one main fact: sshd in Ubuntu
is managed with systemd unit files, the legacy init scripts in
/etc/init.d/ are not used. The /run/sshd directory is created by systemd
because /lib/systemd/system/ssh.service contains the
RuntimeDirectory=sshd directive.

You can find pointers to get help with your specific need here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

As this is a configuration issue, rather than a bug a in Ubuntu, I'm
marking this bug as Invalid. If you believe that this is really a bug,
then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather
than a configuration issue, and then change the bug status back to New.

Title:
  Privilege Separation Directory default

Status in openssh package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Ubuntu: 18.04.2 LTS
  OpenSSH: 7.6p1

  I am having a problem starting multiple sshd processes. The default location
of the sshd privilege separation directory is hard-coded to /run/sshd (see man
page). The original OpenSSH 7.6p1 located this file are /var/empty. Somehow the
default location in the pathnames.h for _PATH_PRIVSEP_CHROOT_DIR has been
changed from /var/empty to /run/sshd. I have asked OpenSSH to provision the
ability to change this directory location from either the command-line or the
sshd_config file; Theo de Raadt, et. al. pretty much said "NO!" using some
rather provocative language.
  Here is the problem with using /run/sshd:
  1) Every time there is a boot, the /run directory is cleaned out.
  2) The /etc/init.d/ssh script is required to check and mkdir the /run/sshd
directory.
  3) If you have multiple service scripts, like lan_ssh and wan_ssh, the 2
scripts conflict in the generation and creation of the /run/sshd directory.
  4) The only work-around I have found is to have a rc.local script mkdir the
/run/sshd directory and remove the mkdir /run/sshd from the /etc/init.d/
scripts.
  If we revert back to the /var/empty directory approach and remove the "mkdir
/run/sshd" operation from the /etc/init.d/ script(s), this problem goes away
since the system does not recreate /var during every boot.
  This would require 1 of 2 changes to the existing release of sshd,
specifically:
  1) Change the default location of the privilege separation directory from
/run/sshd back to the original /var/empty. This would require the install
script to create this directory if it does not already exist.
  2) Modify the sshd.c file to provision the ability to change the default
location of the privilege separation directory.

  [Test Case]
  1. User1 at Ubuntu box issues "sudo apt-get upgrade";
  2. User2 at Ubuntu box issues "shutdown -r" or reboots it using the GUI;
  3. System reboots and potentially turns into an inconsistent state.

  [Remarks]
  APT should automatically inhibit system halts/reboots while packages being
installed/removed. A similar behavior to what is shown by unattended-upgrades.

  Not really any, it's just an additional string in the entry. The only

  On initial boot, machine got 10.0.15.109 IP address:

  May 03 13:09:41 ceph2 systemd-networkd[29349]: br0: Configured
  May 03 13:09:41 ceph2 systemd-networkd[29349]: br0: DHCPv4 address
10.0.15.109/23 via 10.0.15.253

  At one point, DHCP server reserver this IP address and client
  eventually picked up new IP address:

  May 03 15:01:12 ceph2 systemd-networkd[1137]: br0: DHCPv4 address
  10.0.15.128/23 via 10.0.15.253

  This resulted in IP addresses:

  # ip -o a

preferred_lft forever
  1: loinet6 ::1/128 scope host \   valid_lft forever preferred_lft

  6: br0inet6 fe80::b8d7:5eff:fe6b:62a/64 scope link \   valid_lft
forever preferred_lft forever

  So far, everything is fine. But, the routes on the machine are bogus:

  # ip r
  default via 10.0.15.253 dev br0 proto dhcp src 10.0.15.109 metric 100
  default via 10.0.15.253 dev br0 proto dhcp src 10.0.15.128 metric 100
  10.0.14.0/23 dev br0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.15.128
  10.0.15.253 dev br0 proto dhcp scope link src 10.0.15.109 metric 100
  10.0.15.253 dev br0 proto dhcp scope link src 10.0.15.128 metric 100
  172.16.0.0/24 dev eno1np0 proto kernel scope link src 172.16.0.2

  routes with src 10.0.15.109 should have been removed when lease was
  renewed. I'm not sure if this is a bug in netplan or systemd. This is
  18.04, systemd 37-3ubuntu10.21, netplan 0.40.1~18.04.4.
