Bug description:
  [Impact]

USN-4668-1 introduced a regression in python-apt when using certain
  APIs with a file handle.

  [Test case]

  # Landscape scenario:
  1) On the Landscape server, create a package profile that installs a single
package, 'hello' is enough.
  2) On the Landscape server, apply the package profile to a client
  3) On the Landscape client, verify that there is no segfault message on
'/var/log/kern.log'
  4) On the Landscape server, verify that the activity to apply the package
profile ends with success.

Step 3) would show a segfault and step 4), the activity would stay 'In
  Progress' forever.

  # dak scenario:
dak crashes with a segmentation fault in python3-apt when processing
uploads or processing the NEW queue on ftp-master; and also on my
playground server (used to generate the backtrace).

Bug description:
I have been using Ubuntu 20.04 since it was released. Suddenly, a few
days ago, the sound device output selection (gnome-control-center >
Sound > Output device) stopped work properly. It is starting as HDMI
by default (it used to be "internal" before the bug, but this is not
the question). The problem is that when i change from HDMI to another
("internal" or bluetooth) output it doesn't work anymore, the sound
keep being outputted by HDMI instead. It only works when i change HDMI
profile to 5.1, then all HDMI profiles just disappear and internal or
  bluetooth audio works fine.

  I don't know if it's really a bug in gnome-control-center, or i just
blaming the GUI, but I will do what is necessary to find this out.

I hope i can help improve Ubuntu reporting this. Thanks for all
  developers!

The 2020f upload of tzdata did not include an update of the ICU
timezone data because it was not yet up to date. It has now been
updated so we should update tzdata with that new information.

  tzdata (2020f-1ubuntu1) hirsute; urgency=medium

    * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: 1909698). Remaining changes:
  - Ship ICU timezone data files which are utilized by php and keep them
at 2020d as they have not yet been updated.

  [Test Case]
  1) sudo apt-get install python3-icu
  2) python3 -c "from datetime import datetime; from icu import ICUtzinfo,
TimeZone; tz = ICUtzinfo(TimeZone.creat
  eTimeZone('Europe/Volgograd')); print(str(tz.utcoffset(datetime(2020, 12,

Before the SRU it will return 3:00:00, after the SRU it will return
  4:00:00.

In Gtk+, however, is quite different. User needs to press "plus" and "minus"
key to collapse and expand nodes, leaving Right and Left arrows with
essentially null functionality. Well yeah, that keys allow to move horizontally
into row cells.
Seeing many of the applications written using Gtk+, there are not many cases
where user find useful moving horizontally across the row with the keyboard,
most GtkTreeView that I see are simple and used only to show information.
So I guess the current GtkTreeView behaviour is crazy, not useful in most
cases, goes against intuition and against good User Experience.

I'm really not familiar with Gtk+ programming but, as user, I find this
"bug" extremely annoying in my day to day.

So, I make some changes in Gtk+ to enhance (from my point of view) the
behavior of GtkTreeView with the keyboard.

The attached patch to the 3.4 branch modifies the default GtkTreeView behaviour
with the keyboard, expanding nodes with the right arrow and collapsing it with
left arrow, selecting parent and child nodes when appropriate:
 - When user press Left on a collapsed node, Gtk+ select the parent node.
 - When user press right on an expanded node, Gtk+ select the first child node.
Users that want to navigate into cells horizontally (as I can see, a non
frecuent use case) will need to press Ctrl+. Users can still move
to the parent node with the Backspace key, without collapsing anything.

I don't know exactly if this behavior change break some expected
behavior to application programmer, I hope not.

A last question, Why do you implemented the current GtkTreeView behavior
knowing the big difference with other tested GUIs?

Best Regards!

Just to give a little background, this was tried in 2006, see:

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105895#c27

And reverted a year later due to complaints:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1906600] Re: WiFi disconnects continually (goes "down" in NetworkManager)

2021-01-08 Thread Bryan J Smalley
Hello all! I wanted to come back in to report that today I took an
automatic update and this issue appears to be resolved. I've had the
machine up for about seven hours and have maintained a wireless
connection the entire time. I am running kernel 5.4.0-60-generic after
the update. So, I am going to try to close this issue. If I am not
able (permitted) to do so, please feel free to close it as resolved.
Thank you all very much for the responses, troubleshooting, and all
around support.

Cheers!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2021-01-08 Thread Julian Andres Klode
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Installations that really succeeded would then fail because APT could not
immediately configure a package. Which is a pointless way to fail at that
point, because everything did work out anyway.

- So what we do is change that to a warning.
+ We have two changes that help address this:
+
+ * The first one stops immediately configuring multi-arch siblings (e.g.
+ libc6:i386 when it's configuring libc6:amd64). This was not necessary,
+ and caused all the libc6:i386 failures here.
+
+ * The second change sort of also supersedes the first one: It just
+ ignores any errors from immediate configuration, relying on the fact
+ that it's checked and rectified at a later point if there are
+ unconfigured packages (which is what made all those failures happen
+ spuriously after having successfully installed everything).

  [Test case]
- Not available right now. Issues can flare up and then disappear again.
+ We have one test case in EIPP format in the Debian bug 973305 which was only
helped by the second change, not the first one. Run /usr/lib/apt/planners <
eipp.log and check there are no errors.
+
+ TODO: It's unclear if the APT from proposed installed in the live
+ session will fix the installer, needs investigation, but would make a
+ useful test case.

  [Regression potential]
It's imaginable that we missed something somewhere and some path that checked
for a set error doesn't check it anymore, and we report success when we hit an
error, but it seems unlikely.

Behavior of --simulate changes. This used to fail before as well, and
will now only produce a warning. We don't believe that is a reason of
  concern.

  [Groovy SRU]
The groovy SRU is a sync of the 2.1.11 micro release from Debian unstable
which also incorporates changes to the documentation: A typo fix, replacing
focal with groovy in examples, and minor Dutch manual pages translation updates.

We do not have test cases for the documentation changes, and we do not
consider there to be a huge regression potential. As long as they build,
they should be readable - maybe some words are wrong in the translation,
  who knows.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2021-01-08 Thread Julian Andres Klode
I think we have the final fix now that covers every case and not just
the corner case with libc6:i386. It now just ignores those errors, which
as we can see works out fine in the end, because the failures occur
after installing because the error was never correctly propagated to the
caller.

A later code segment actually checks that everything is configured, so
this is as safe as we can get, and best of all, it can't really regress
stuff, since it does not change the actual ordering :)

Installations that really succeeded would then fail because APT could not
immediately configure a package. Which is a pointless way to fail at that
point, because everything did work out anyway.

We have two changes that help address this:

  * The first one stops immediately configuring multi-arch siblings
  (e.g. libc6:i386 when it's configuring libc6:amd64). This was not
necessary, and caused all the libc6:i386 failures here.

  * The second change sort of also supersedes the first one: It just
ignores any errors from immediate configuration, relying on the fact
that it's checked and rectified at a later point if there are
unconfigured packages (which is what made all those failures happen
spuriously after having successfully installed everything).

  [Test case]
We have one test case in EIPP format in the Debian bug 973305 which was only
helped by the second change, not the first one. Run /usr/lib/apt/planners <
eipp.log and check there are no errors.

TODO: It's unclear if the APT from proposed installed in the live
session will fix the installer, needs investigation, but would make a
  useful test case.

Title:
Installing auditd sometimes fails in post-inst

Status in audit package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in audit package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Sometimes, auditd will get stuck when starting up, causing systemd to
kill it after a while since it (systemd) never got the start
  notification.

Upstream troubleshooted this to be caused by calling a syslog()
  function inside a signal handler.

  [Test Case]
There is no reliable test case to reproduce the bug, other than trying the
fixed packages on an affected system where the hang occurs more frequently.

  Basically:
  sudo systemctl stop auditd
  sudo systemctl start auditd

should work reliably. Do not run that in a tight loop, however, as
that will trigger a it's-restarting-too-frequently failure.

  [Where problems could occur]
  - if auditd fails to start, then the first fallback is syslog, and if that is
not picking up the audit messages, the last resort is the kernel buffer, which
can fill up. In the case it fills up, audit logs will be lost.

  - it's possible to configure the audit system to panic() the machine
if audit messages are lost or otherwise not able to be recorded
(auditctl -f 2; default is 1 which is printk())

  - the update restarts auditd as expected. Misconfiguration on very
very busy systems could mean that audit logs would be lost during the
brief moment the service is restarted. If that's the case, this update
would just be one more way to trigger it, but not be the root cause of
  the problem

  - similarly, as is usual with updates that restart services, it's
possible than an incorrect configuration for auditd is present, but
was never loaded before. The restart will load the config, and will
  fail in such a case.

  - this update removes a logging statement that occurs during startup:

  ("dispatcher %d reaped", pid)

It's unlikely, but possible, that some monitoring software could be
looking for that message in the logs. It won't be there anymore after
  this update.

  [Other Info]
The patch is committed upstream and part of the 2.8.5 release, which is
present in Focal and later.

  [Original Description]

This happens sometimes when installing auditd on Ubuntu 18.04.2, most

fixes the issue, but the failure breaks our automation. The log from

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1848330] Re: Installing auditd sometimes fails in post-inst

2021-01-08 Thread Kodiak Firesmith
Apologies - I don't remember the full specifics here but IIRC, the
Mandiant FireEye HX agent foolishly re-implements Linux Audit, and it's
every bit as terrible as that sounds. We discovered that we needed to
basically purge both FireEye HX and Auditd on the system, then install
Auditd, then disable it entirely, then allow the travesty of having the
FireEye HX agent run it's own auditd daemon which clobbers the OS
auditd. Yikes. And yes we filed a "please don't do such ugly things
with core Linux services" request with their support. :/

I'm having difficulties reproducing the bug, to validate the patch. I
build bionic test packages with the patch mentioned earlier, if someone
wants to test: https://launchpad.net/~ahasenack/+archive/ubuntu/audit-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1910636] Re: update icu-data which is bundled in tzdata to 2020f

2021-01-08 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

The 2020f upload of tzdata did not include an update of the ICU timezone
data because it was not yet up to date. It has now been updated so we
should update tzdata with that new information.

  tzdata (2020f-1ubuntu1) hirsute; urgency=medium

- * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: 1909698). Remaining changes:
- - Ship ICU timezone data files which are utilized by php and keep them
- at 2020d as they have not yet been updated.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).

2021-01-08 Thread Richard Merren
I think the problem was in the headphones. I found I was having trouble
on my phone as well. I contacted Sony support and they had me try a soft
reset of the headset, which seems to have restored function. I am still
getting bad mic sound on bluetooth, but I think it is just the low
quality sound on this thread and not the completely muffled sound I was
getting before. I will try reconnecting to the DG80 now and see if it is
any better.

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

Bug description:
  Hi,

When having a bluetooth headphone (JBL Live) connected using the A2DP
pulseaudio sink, the output sound suddenly stops during a music
streaming of videocall session. Sometimes just disconnecting and
reconnecting the headphone works, but some times reconnection is not
possible anymore due to the hanging of bluetoothd. Bluetoothd still
appears in the processes list, but cannot be killed, neither with
"sudo service bluetooth stop" or "kill -9":

$ ps afx | grep blue

  20548 ?Ds 0:03 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd

All programs keep working normally, only bluetooth is affected as well
  as the bluetooth settings page.

The only solution is a hard reboot. A soft reboot doesn't even work:
the systems keeps trying to end the bluetoothd process so one needs to
press the power button for a few seconds to terminate the process.

  $ bluetoothd --version
  5.48

  $ uname -a
Linux omer 5.4.0-58-generic #64~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 9 17:11:11 UTC
2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Using Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS preinstalled on a Dell XPS13, which has been
working nice for over one year now just like previous versions.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1910775] [NEW] netdev does not support the independent flag for vxlan

2021-01-08 Thread Robert Müller
Public bug reported:

systemd.netdev does support the independet option for various types of
interfaces but not for type vxlan. This options was added in a later
release of systemd (247) with this PR:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/17073.

Since it is currently not possible to create a interface with type vxlan
it would be nice the include this change in the current LTS release
(focal).

"We also need":
1) Description: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS, Release: 20.04
2) systemd:
  Installed: 245.4-4ubuntu3.3
  Candidate: 245.4-4ubuntu3.3
3) systemd support the flag
4) it does not support it

Thanks!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1910252] Re: `systemctl hibernate` incorrectly reports "Not enough swap space for hibernation"

2021-01-08 Thread Dan Watkins
So I've done a little more testing. On boot, with /sys/power/resume
unset (i.e. 0:0), I see this in the logind debug logs:

Jan 08 09:47:11 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: Sleep mode "disk" is supported
by the kernel.
Jan 08 09:47:11 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: /dev/dm-2: is a candidate device.
Jan 08 09:47:11 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: /dev/sda2: ignoring device with
lower priority
Jan 08 09:47:11 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: /sys/power/resume is not
configured; attempting to hibernate with path: /dev/dm-2, device: 253:2,
offset: 0, priority: -2
Jan 08 09:47:11 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: Not enough swap for hibernation,
Active(anon)=1134696 kB, size=1003516 kB, used=0 kB, threshold=98%

If I set /sys/power/resume correctly, then I see:

Jan 08 09:48:10 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: Sleep mode "disk" is supported
by the kernel.
Jan 08 09:48:10 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: /dev/dm-2: is a candidate device.
Jan 08 09:48:10 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: /dev/sda2: ignoring device with
lower priority
Jan 08 09:48:10 surprise systemd-logind[1887]: No swap partitions or files
matching resume config were found in /proc/swaps.

(I haven't been able to test what happens if I restart logind because I
hit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1910769 if I
try; my plan is add an ExecStartPre which sets the resume device to
logind's unit file, to see if that does the trick.)

Does anyone know what in the system is _meant_ to be setting
/sys/power/resume? Is it possible I'm missing some configuration
somewhere to have that setting happen?

could not transfer the generated information.

After a crash of bluetoothd (see bug 1910405) I tried to run apport-
collect with the bug ID, but the process hangs. After clicking cancel,
it makes the computer hang totally, except running teams calls that
keep streaming but without interaction possible. All is released when
  apport is killed manually.

The problem also occurs when a crash of the Brave browser causes a
  call to apport.

This bug is generated through ubuntu-bug -w after clicking on the
apport-collect window. This second apport process doesn't hang.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1910769] [NEW] systemd-logind: loss of input devices when logging in after restart

2021-01-08 Thread Dan Watkins
Public bug reported:

# Steps to reproduce

1) Login as a regular user.
2) `sudo systemctl restart systemd-logind`

This boots you back to GDM, as you would expect.

3) Login as a user.
4) Wait a few seconds.

# Expected behaviour

I can continue to use my system normally.

# Actual behaviour

My keyboard and mouse stop working; unplugging/replugging has no effect.
Everything on screen continues to behave normally.

# Debugging Notes

I noticed, when Ctrl-Alt-F'ing around trying to figure out what was
going on, that there are _two_ GDM sessions apparently running after the
logind restart.

Furthermore, I logged in on a console (Ctrl-Alt-F2) before performing
the restart of logind, and when my keyboard stopped working in my
graphical session, typing commands still worked! (I couldn't see this
console, obviously, but I tested it by typing `mplayer Music/*/*` and
observing music start playing.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1908167] Re: [SRU] pulseaudio: the headset-mic or heapdhone-mic could not be selected automatically if there is no internal mic

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On the Dell AIO machines, there is no internal mic, after plugging a
headset, users expect the headset-mic or headphone-mic could be selected
automatically. But with the current rule, the headset-mic/headphone-mic will
not be selected automatically and even users manually select them, they will
not show up in the gnome sound setting, and users could not record sound by
headset-mic/headphone-mic.

  [Fix]
backport a patch from pulseaudio mergerequest, the patch is going to be
merged to pulseaudio 14.1. This patch could be backported to hirsute without
any change, but need to be changed if backport it to groovy and focal.

  [Test]
On those Dell AIO, plug a headset, open the gnome sound setting, the
headset-mic is selected automatically, use the headset-mic to record the sound,
the sound could be recorded and the sound quality is good.

  [Where problems could occur]
This patch could change the policy of audio device switching, it will not
affect all audio devices, but only the devices which has AVAIL_UNKNOWN
available status, that means it has possibility to introduce the regression on
headphone-mic ,headset-mic, internal mic and internal speaker's switching since
they all has AVAIL_UNKNOWN status. For example, after unpluging the headset,
the input device will not switch to internal mic automatically or after unplug
the headphone, the output device will not switch to internal speaker
automatically. But this possibility is very low, we have tested the patch on
many Dell and Lenovo machines, all worked well.

Installations that really succeeded would then fail because APT could not
immediately configure a package. Which is a pointless way to fail at that
point, because everything did work out anyway.

So what we do is change that to a warning.

  [Test case]
Not available right now. Issues can flare up and then disappear again.

As long as they
build, they should be readable - maybe some words are wrong in the
  translation, who knows.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1857552] Re: [81NX, Realtek ALC285, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2021-01-08 Thread Nils Hondong
I have the same bug with a HP Spectre X360 15-eb0024ng

Already tried to change options in alsa-config:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
and
options snd-hda-intel model=alc295-hp-x360

Still no sound at the speaker. Headset and internal micro working

I think it is "just" an error setting the correct output device.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1803391] Re: Systemd update installation hangs in unattended-upgrades InstallOnShutdown mode

2021-01-08 Thread Balint Reczey
@dominic-timedicer Yes, way more likely. You can blacklist systemd in
unattended-upgrades to avoid upgrading it unattended until LP:1782709
gets solved.

Bug description:

  [Impact]

   * Installation of latest systemd update in -security hangs with
current versions of unattended-upgrades in supported releases. The
u-u-side fix is tracked in LP: #1778219.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The daemons, shipped in deb:systemd, are not attempted to be
restarted because despite package installation the system is in the
middle of shutting down. This means that currently running daemons may
be helding up open files on the filesystem, however all process are
being stopped and killed as part of shutdown. Hence the worst possible
regression from this, is an unclean shutdown, but even that shouldn't
  happen with this update.

  Reproduction:

  rbalint@yogi:~$ lxc launch ubuntu:18.04 uu-systemd-onshutdown

Ubuntu 20.10 - elfutils unwinding broken for s390 compat

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:

Status in elfutils package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in elfutils source package in Groovy:
  In Progress
Status in elfutils source package in Hirsute:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  SRU Bug Template:
  =

  [Impact]

   * There is an endianess problem in pid_memory_read that impacts
  s390x.

   * Due to this elfutils biarch test fails on s390x doing unwinding for
  a 32 bit process.

  [Fix]

   * e4d985a3c1c873f77d20fa0cd421458cc2824996 e4d985a3 "IBM Z: Fix endianess
problem in pid_memory_read"

  [Test Case]

   * Have an Ubuntu Server 20.10 system or newer installed on LPAR, z/VM or KVM
that comes with elfutils 0.181 or 0.182.

   * Run the test script: 'run-backtrace-native-biarch.sh'

   * It either core dumps without the patch in place - look for
"/test-subr.sh: line 84: 376822 Aborted (core dumped)" or succeeds.

   [Where problems could occur]

   * If the translation is not done right (shift of the upper 4 bytes + down on
big endian 64 bit targets) the situation is broken in the same way, and things
stay the same.

   * But in worst case the changes in 'pid_memory_read' of
/libdwfl/linux-pid-attach.c could have a negative impact even on architectures
other than s390x, in case the check for the endiness is wrong.

   * But the changes are quite traceable and the additional code that fixes the
endianess problem is really only active on a big endian architecture.

   [Other]

   * The fix is upstream accepted with elfutils > 0.182.

  ---Problem Description---
libdw unwinding fails for 32 bit binaries.

Elfutils biarch test currently fails on s390x doing unwinding for a 32
  bit process.

Patch has already been posted and upstream committed:
  https://sourceware.org/pipermail/elfutils-devel/2020q4/003149.html

Please pick up the following commit for the next release:
  commit e4d985a3c1c873f77d20fa0cd421458cc2824996
  Author: Andreas Krebbel
  Date: Thu Nov 19 20:32:24 2020 +0100

IBM Z: Fix endianess problem in pid_memory_read

The cached reads lack the big endian adjustments done in the fallback
  path.

  Signed-off-by: Andreas Krebbel

The patch applies cleanly ontop of elfutils_0.181-1.

strace right now is not built with unwinding support for IBM Z although both
variants should work - libdw and libunwind.

Other distros use libdw from elfutils while Ubuntu on x86 appears to
use libunwind. libdw and libunwind do support IBM Z.

It would be good to build strace with unwinding support for Z.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1908818] Re: pure packaging of libnss3

2021-01-08 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
That should be this fix:
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nss/commit/?h=applied/2%253.55-1ubuntu4=c17f28c15519fb4834860c021c078c6ea0d8ab50

Since this is kind of a patch-on-a-plate I'm marking it server-next.

Bug description:
I just installed Ubuntu 19.10 on my HP Elitebook 840 G1. Switching
from Windows to Ubuntu for personal use.

The mic does not enable/disable with FN+F8 combo and the light is
  constantly on.

I found the following solution to my problem. However, I do not know how to
implement it in Ubuntu 19.10 (new to Ubuntu and generally not as techinical).

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HP_EliteBook_840_G1#Enable_the_microphone_muting_key

  1. Would greatly appreciate if someone could point me to step by step
instructions to install the code from the link above. I can report back if this
resolve the issue.
  2. Also, is there a way to incorporate a fix for this issue with HP laptops
in Ubuntu going forward? When I was searching for a fix, I found this to be a
widespread issue with various HP laptops and Ubuntu dating back a couple years.

  Many thanks.
