[Touch-packages] [Bug 1926248] [NEW] display scrambled - all packages
Public bug reported: shortly after switching to kernel 5.8.0-50 on Apr 16, I got progressively worse display scrambling on all programs. Wrote to ubuntuforums.org Apr 19 but found no resolution. Thinking it was that kernel, I ran on 5.8.0-49 for a day without problem, then it too started the same display glitches. The problem progressed so far that I did a fresh system re-install on Apr 23. After, with the default kernel, 5.8.0-50, scrambling was worse than ever, almost unusable. Fortunately, the second kernel offered was 5.8.0-43. I have run on that kernel for 3 days now with no sign of the scrambling issue. The attached png shows static image corruption examples. The more dramatic strobing, spontaneous jumping from window to window, window re-mapping, video corruption etc., I was unable to capture. hi,
first, after boot and log-in, the interface elements are slow to
display. the left-screen dock is empty and shows only after some time.
then, I must wait to have access to program (applications) menu
("Activities").
the graphic interface itself become buggy and faulty when using multi-
workspace (dynamic work-spaces displays).
when I launch a program on second workspace screen:
the mouse click stop to have any result (mouse and touchpad)
then, I can not change workspace.
then, programs freezes
I need to reboot the computer to regain any control.
I try 20.04.2.0 LTS on this computer, witch works fine. no any
smallest problem.

Bug description:
https://people.canonical.com/~rbalint/zstd-debs/ contains a .deb built
on Hirsute having both data and control members of the .deb being
compressed with zstd. It can be handy for testing various tools.
[dpkg]
Decompression support in dpkg landed first in Bionic and is being SRUd to
Xenial in LP: #1764220 enable Launchpad's Xenial systems to process the
zstd-compressed binary packages.
From dpkg's perspective the upgrade path is cleared.
The original plan was compressing only the internal data.tar .deb
member, but dpkg uses uniform compression by default since dpkg 1.19.0
thus I'm collecting all the changes to support control.tar.zst, too,
in this bug.

I also had trouble getting that merge request to apply cleanly, so I just copied the affected file (gtk/gtkimcontextsimple.c) at the point of the commit you linked to, and overwrote the copy in Ubuntu's package. It seems there were a few other changes between Ubuntu's version and that commit. I tested some more. After logging out and receiving the broken video mode, I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a textmode login screen. If I then immediately press ctrl+alt+F1 I get to the graphic login screen, and can login again. Pressing ctrl+alt+F1 directly at the broken video mode does nothing, though. Aside from the code being wrong - it's missing an apt_pkg.init_config(),
it also does not work with the config being setup; it needs to be
whitelisted.
So we definitely need to SRU APT. However, we are already preparing
1.2.35 at the moment for ESM enablement, I don't know if we want to
stuff both things together.

Bug description:
https://people.canonical.com/~rbalint/zstd-debs/ contains a .deb built
on Hirsute having both data and control members of the .deb being
compressed with zstd. It can be handy for testing various tools.
[dpkg]
Decompression support in dpkg landed first in Bionic and is being SRUd to
Xenial in LP: #1764220 enable Launchpad's Xenial systems to process the
zstd-compressed binary packages.
From dpkg's perspective the upgrade path is cleared.
The original plan was compressing only the internal data.tar .deb
member, but dpkg uses uniform compression by default since dpkg 1.19.0
thus I'm collecting all the changes to support control.tar.zst, too,
in this bug.

Bug description:
https://people.canonical.com/~rbalint/zstd-debs/ contains a .deb built
on Hirsute having both data and control members of the .deb being
compressed with zstd. It can be handy for testing various tools.
[dpkg]
Decompression support in dpkg landed first in Bionic and is being SRUd to
Xenial in LP: #1764220 enable Launchpad's Xenial systems to process the
zstd-compressed binary packages.
From dpkg's perspective the upgrade path is cleared.
The original plan was compressing only the internal data.tar .deb
member, but dpkg uses uniform compression by default since dpkg 1.19.0
thus I'm collecting all the changes to support control.tar.zst, too,
in this bug.

On a different machine (no Nvidia) but with the same monitor, I can also reproduce this over DisplayPort but not over HDMI. So I don't think that the Nvidia graphics card/driver is to blame. Instead, it seems like there's a general DisplayPort-related issue either in Linux/Alsa or in my cable/monitor (but if so, then Windows has a workaround for that issue, which could hopefully be implemented in Linux/Alsa too). In summary, I can reproduce this: - With any installed Linux OSes (Ubuntu or Mint) or with live sticks (tried Ubuntu, Mint, PopOS and Manjaro). - With the open-source driver (Nouveau) or with various versions of the Nvidia driver. - With Chrome or Firefox or even an Audacity recording (from the DisplayPort output's audio monitor in PulseAudio) of the same audio stream. - Even when I try the usual fixes like tsched=0, disabling module-suspend-on-idle, disabling /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save or position_fix=1 or =2. - Even when I don't use PulseAudio, but use `apulse ffplay ...` to play a file directly to ALSA. - NOT on Windows. Any browser and any video/sound file works fine on Windows with exactly the same hardware. - NOT with HDMI. The same card/monitor/headphones connected over HDMI (aka. "HDMI / DisplayPort 3" aka. "hdmi-stereo-extra2" aka. device number 8 aka. "HDMI 2") works fine. Only over DisplayPort (aka. "HDMI / DisplayPort 4" aka. "hdmi-stereo-extra3" aka. device number 9 aka. "HDMI 3") it crackles. - NOT when I save the problematic Audacity recording as a wav/mp3 file (and play it in any media player or with `apulse aplay ...`) or when I convert it to 16-Bit PCM in Audacity (and back to 32-bit float). My suspicion is that this somehow gets rid of the pauses / quiet parts by writing sth like zeros in there. - NOT when I have some other continuous audio running at the same time, e.g. if I turn on some radio in Rhythmbox and play the problematic video at the same time, there's no crackles. Again my suspicion is that this gets rid of the quiet parts -- not in the video, but in the mixed stream sent to the audio device. Public bug reported: Hello, When in terminal, with my header on, if I press alternatively the "tab" key or the backspace key when there is no text, I get parasitic noise that come and go, in addition to the error sound. The parasitic noises are most often not loud, but they're here although they definitely shouldn't. Sometimes, it's quite loud too. The bug is not deterministic. Sometimes the tone is higher/lower. Sometimes it disappear on the first time I re-press one key among tab and suppress. Sometimes it requires more key pressing. I'm not sure whether the sound ends up by disapearing after a few retries, or if it just becomes too quiet for me to hear it. The bug doesn't occur when the sound is deactivated I feel like this has something to do with the error sound that is played when I delete and there is no character to delete It is not a big deal in itself. But maybe this very benign symptom hides a more serious issue idk. The sound comes out of my graphic card (nvidia gtx 980 ti) through a Samsung TV. Public bug reported: [Impact] We want to be able to use JSON hooks 0.2 in xenial and later releases to display messages to users during dist-upgrade. For xenial, we backport the JSON hook support in its entirety, whereas for later releases, we only need to cherry-pick bugfixes and the v0.2 improvements. [Test plan] We have included unit and integration tests for the new JSON code to test the writer and prevent regressions in future changes. Regressions in other parts of the code should be caught by the test suite. With Ubuntu 19.10 the headset was working, there was audio and the mic was perfect for video conferencing. [Steps to reproduce] 1. Connect headset (used blueman to setup and connect) 1.1. When connected the system automatically selects A2DP profile 2. Start playing audio (browser or other) 3. Change profile to HSP/HFP with pavucontrol (or blueman) 4. The audio disappears and microphone is not working (no input) 5. Optionally switch back to A2DP and the audio comes back [Expected] When switching to HSP/HFP the audio should keep playing and the microphone should start working [Notes] I tried with pavucontrol to switch between profiles while playing audio from a browser. As side note there's a led in the headset that still blinks when switching profile. I tried deleting the pulse folder under user's profile .config without success, also reinstalled packages and did a `sudo alsa force-reload` and rebooting several times. Note: not sure this is a duplicate of [Bug #1576559], it looks quite different since the profile changes but the headset stops working. The DISCOVER packets can be seen in strace and tcpdump. The OFFER packets can be seen in tcpdump, but no read event is triggered. Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't have the problem, neither does Debian 10. Building these dhclient versions on Ubuntu 20.04 alleviates the problem a little, but it still occurs. So this issue might also be kernel related. [Fix] https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-utils/pull/69 Switch the default audio format from 8 bits to 16 bits if hardware supports it. [Test] 1. Plug a microphone. 2. Run `arecord | aplay` and say something to the microphone. 3. Only noise can be heard. With the fix applied, the recording is clear. [Where problems could occur] If there's any hardware falsely advertised to support 16 bits, this change will break them. However, this is effectively using `arecord -f cd` or `arecord -f cdr`, so that's not likely.
