[Touch-packages] [Bug 1926139] Re: dhclient: thread concurrency race leads to DHCPOFFER packets not being received
** Description changed: [Impact] Occasionally, during instance boot or machine start-up, dhclient will attempt to acquire a dhcp lease and fail, leaving the instance with no IP address and making it unreachable. This happens about once every 100 reboots on bare metal, or Chris Patterson in comment #2 describes it as affecting between ~0.3% to 2% of deployments on Microsoft Azure. Azure uses dhclient called from cloud- init instead of systemd-networkd, and this is causing issues with larger deployments. The logs of an affected dhclient produce the following: Listening on LPF/enp1s0/52:54:00:1c:d7:00 Sending on LPF/enp1s0/52:54:00:1c:d7:00 Sending on Socket/fallback DHCPDISCOVER on enp1s0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3 (xid=0xd222950f) DHCPDISCOVER on enp1s0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 5 (xid=0xd222950f) ... No working leases in persistent database - sleeping. Full log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/8yBfw2KR5h/ Log of a working run: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/N3ZgqrxyQD/ The bizarre thing is when you tcpdump dhclient, we see all DHCPDISOVER packets being replied to with DHCPOFFER packets, but the got_one() callback is never called, dhclient does not read these DHCPOFFER packets, and continues sending DHCPDISCOVER packets. Once it reaches 25 DHCPDISCOVER packets sent, it gives up. - tcpdump: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/isc-dhcp/+bug/1926139/+attachment/5641810/+files/test.pcap - Screenshot of Wireshark: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/isc-dhcp/+bug/1926139/+attachment/5641811/+files/Screenshot_2023-01-17-16-14-21_1920x1200%250A1920x1080%250A1920x1080.png + tcpdump: + Screenshot of Wireshark: This behaviour led several bug reporters to believe it was a kernel issue, with the kernel not pushing DHCPOFFER packets to dhclient. This is not the case, the actual problem is dhclient containing a thread concurrency race condition, and when the race occurs, the read socket is closed prematurely, and dhclient does not read any of the DHCPOFFER replies. - The full explanation is in the "Other Info" section, but the fix for - this is to change bind9-libs from being built multithreaded, back to - single threaded as intended by dhclient maintainers. - - In Focal and Jammy, isc-dhcp links against bind9 libraries provided in - bind9-libs, while in Kinetic onward isc-dhcp has an in-tree bind9 - library it uses, which is already configured properly to --disable- - threads. - - Change the Focal and Jammy bind9-libs to --disable-threads and update - symbol files to reflect the library is single threaded again. + The full explanation is in the "Other Info" section, but the fix is to + add a mutex that restricts access to the global linked list of open + sockets, and ensures that a newly created socket is added to this list, + before the socketmanager callback has an opportunity to walk this list + when there is data immediately able to be read. + + Mauricio has provided such a patch, and includes options to disable this + behaviour during runtime to minimise regression risk. [Testcase] - Start a fresh Focal or Jammy instance. - - Download and set executable test-parallel.sh, and edit some lines: - - 1) wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/isc-dhcp/+bug/1926139/+attachment/5593045/+files/test-parallel.sh - 2) chmod +x test-parallel.sh - 3) vim test-parallel.sh - - Change iface="enp5s0" to your interface, likely iface="enp1s0". - Comment out the line "# cp bionic-dhclient $workdir/dhclient". - - 4) sudo ./test-parallel.sh - - After five minutes, if you issue reproduces, you will see "TEST FAILED". - - You can watch the output with: - - 5) cat /tmp/dhclient-* | less - - Next, for instrumented runs, you need to build dhclient from source. - - 1) sudo apt install build-essential devscripts - 2) apt source isc-dhcp - 3) sudo apt build-dep isc-dhcp - 4) cd isc-dhcp - - Apply the below patch: - - https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hGsssrVyG4/ - - 5) patch -p1 < ~/patch.patch - 6) debuild -b -uc -us - 7) cd .. - 8) sudo dpkg -i isc-dhcp-client-* - 9) sudo ./test-parallel.sh - 10) cat /tmp/dhclient-* | less - - Look for the race, as described in "Other Info", namely: - - mruffell: registering with socket manager - mruffell: callback called - mruffell: omapi object is NULL - mruffell: omapi object is NULL - mruffell: Adding obj to linked list - mruffell: Obj added to list - - The issue has reproduced. - - If you install the test package from the following ppa: - - https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf337873-test - - Instructions to install (on a Focal or Jammy

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running only once: apport-collect 1228038 and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. The bug title says: "subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1". [Touch-packages] [Bug 2003797] Re: Pre-1970 timestamps are knowingly wrong
** Changed in: tzdata (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: tzdata (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to tzdata in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2003797 Title: Pre-1970 timestamps are knowingly wrong Status in tzdata package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: tzdata 2021b says in NEWS: "Merge more location-based Zones whose timestamps agree since 1970, as pre-1970 timestamps are out of scope. This is part of a process that has been ongoing since 2013. This does not affect post-1970 timestamps, and timezone historians who build with 'make PACKRATDATA=backzone' should see no changes to pre-1970 timestamps." tzdata 2022b finished that process: "Finish moving to 'backzone' the location-based zones whose timestamps since 1970 are duplicates; adjust links accordingly. This change ordinarily affects only pre-1970 timestamps, and with the new PACKRATLIST option it does not affect any timestamps. In this round the affected zones are Antarctica/Vostok, Asia/Brunei, Asia/Kuala_Lumpur, Atlantic/Reykjavik, Europe/Amsterdam, Europe/Copenhagen, Europe/Luxembourg, Europe/Monaco, Europe/Oslo, Europe/Stockholm, Indian/Christmas, Indian/Cocos, Indian/Kerguelen, Indian/Mahe, Indian/Reunion, Pacific/Chuuk, Pacific/Funafuti, Pacific/Majuro, Pacific/Pohnpei, Pacific/Wake and Pacific/Wallis, and the affected links are Arctic/Longyearbyen, Atlantic/Jan_Mayen, Iceland, Pacific/Ponape, Pacific/Truk, and Pacific/Yap." The Debian/Ubuntu package builds tzdata with the default settings (PACKRATDATA unset) which merges zones whose timestamps agree since 1970. This leads to timestamps before 1970 being knowingly wrong. Example: Europe/Oslo is a link to Europe/Berlin since they are identical since 1970, but they differed before 1965. Berlin observed no summertime between 1950 and 1980, but Oslo did in 1959 to 1965. So summer 1960 in Oslo should be UTC+2 compared to UTC+1 in Berlin: ``` $ TZ=Europe/Oslo date -d "1960-07-01 10:00 Z" Fri Jul 1 12:00:00 CEST 1960 $ TZ=Europe/Berlin date -d "1960-07-01 10:00 Z" Fri Jul 1 11:00:00 CET 1960 ``` There was a big debate upstream (see https://lwn.net/Articles/870478/ or https://mm.icann.org/pipermail/tz/2021-May/030137.html). The Debian/Ubuntu package should ship timezones from backzone. Users that care about pre-1970 timestamps will be satisfied and users not caring will probably not care about the additional timezones. The install size will increase by around 20% and the amount of distincted (i.e. not symlinked) timezones will increase by 33%: ``` $ grep ^Zone africa antarctica asia australasia etcetera europe factory northamerica southamerica | wc -l 352 $ grep ^Zone backzone | wc -l 119 ``` To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tzdata/+bug/2003797/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988819] Re: When apt keeps back packages due to phased updates, it should say nothing
Yes, please fix. >From a security standpoint, we can't tell the "good" held backs (Phased Updates) from the "bad" held backs (problem with package). So we assume its a package problem, go in with a hammer, and use Aptitude's safe- upgrade to force the updates. Now we've subverted/undermined the Phased Updates when there was no problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apt in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1988819 Title: When apt keeps back packages due to phased updates, it should say nothing Status in apt package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: After phased updates have been introduced, it may happen that apt upgrade shows packages as upgradable but ends up not upgrading them. In this case the packages are indicated as being "kept back". Unfortunately, the feedback provided about this to the user is not very informative. The user sees the packages being kept back and thinks something is going wrong on the system. When packages are kept back because of phased updates, apt should say so e.g., it should say that the upgrade is delayed. Incidentally note that aptitude does not respect phased updates. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2003785] Re: apt source exact-source-package doesn't download the requested source package
The idea is that a user will want to request the sources for a given binary package – after all, that is the promise of GPL and co that you can easily get the source for the binary you have installed. So for me at least this binary-to-source mapping is very intuitive and I would be very confused about your intuitive non-mapping. Any way of handling can result in confusion every time a source and binary package have the same name, but produce/include packages with other names. A prime example used to be 'automake', but nowadays at least that mess was cleaned up. I don't think changing defaults would help here, especially not after ~25 years of operating in this way. I guess it might be more helpful to detect these collisions and have apt-get print/apt ask the user about it rather than assuming that one way or the other and an option to change it is intuitive for all users at all times. Or, well, teach package maintainers that these collisions are a horrible idea. Preferably both. (Personally not going to work on either through in the foreseeable future.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apt in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2003785 Title: apt source exact-source-package doesn't download the requested source package Status in apt package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: apt source exact-source-package doesn't download the right source package when specifying source package, i expect the exact source package to be downloaded. example: $ apt source linux-lowlatency => incorrectly downloads linux-meta-lowlatency $ apt source --only-source linux-lowlatency => is very counter intuitive but downloads linux-lowlatency source package Please default to downloading exact source package by default first, and offer binary->source resolution separately. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2003797] [NEW] Pre-1970 timestamps are knowingly wrong
Public bug reported: tzdata 2021b says in NEWS: "Merge more location-based Zones whose timestamps agree since 1970, as pre-1970 timestamps are out of scope. The install size will increase by around 20% and the amount of distincted (i.e. not symlinked) timezones will increase by 33%: ``` $ grep ^Zone africa antarctica asia australasia etcetera europe factory northamerica southamerica | wc -l 352 $ grep ^Zone backzone | wc -l 119 ``` ** Affects: tzdata (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to tzdata in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2003797 Title: Pre-1970 timestamps are knowingly wrong Status in tzdata package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: tzdata 2021b says in NEWS: "Merge more location-based Zones whose timestamps agree since 1970, as pre-1970 timestamps are out of scope. [Touch-packages] [Bug 821883] Re: [MIR] argyll
@Bryce, @RAOF: thanks for the notice! I feel we should then reuse this MIR to file a new template with our modern MIR rules (Note that the initial demand was made in 2011!) I’m thus marking it as incomplete until this is DONE, feel free to redirect this request directly to the team who will own and maintain the package. ** Changed in: argyll (Ubuntu) Assignee: Till Kamppeter (till-kamppeter) => Chris Halse Rogers (raof) ** No longer affects: colord (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to colord in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/821883 Title: [MIR] argyll Status in argyll package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Note this MIR is for both argyll and libicc2 (both packages are currently in Universe). With the most recent argyll package the binary packages of argyll and libicc2 are now all produced by the argyll source package. We followed Debian to unsplit here as the upstream source for both is argyll. The libicc2 source package in Universe can get dropped. Availability: Currently available in Universe, building on all currently supported architectures, see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/argyll Rationale: In Oneiric we want to introduce ICC-based color management on the operating system level, using the same architecture as Fedora does. argyll (support for color calibration) and libicc2 (ICC handling library) are part of this architecture. Therefore we need them in Main. This MIR is a work item of the following Blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-o-icc-color- management According to the Blueprint additional demand on CD space for the whole introduction of color management is around 300K only. Security: No security vulnerabilities known at CVE and Secunia for the current version (1.3.3), vulnerabilities of older versions are all fixed, no SUID components, no daemons. Quality assurance: Installs without debconf questions. The package is maintained upstream as new releases occur regularly and they get packaged for Debian by Roland Mas (see debian/changelog). UI standards: The package are a library and command line utilities. The complete upstream documentation is available in /usr/share/doc/argyll/. Each command shows a help page by calling it without parameters. Dependencies: Depends only on standard libraries for X and images. They are all in Main. Maintenance: See "Quality assurance". Timeouts in the upstream tests have been an issue for a while, but kinetic on ppc64el consistently times out with upstream tests that run in QEMU. Skipping individual tests does not help, because *which* tests time out appears to change with each build. For example, in 251.4-1ubuntu4 the TEST-36-NUMAPOLICY test was consistently the culprit, but now in 251.4-1ubuntu6 the TEST-14-MACHINE-ID often times out. I have not been able to identify a root cause for this, but it seems that running tests in QEMU is very fragile on ppc64el, where as the tests that run in nspawn are more consistent. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1988819] Re: When apt keeps back packages due to phased updates, it should say nothing
The issue with being less verbose is that users will end up with the same issue when two neighbor machines have different updates. This also applies to machines belonging to different people as soon as these people discuss about a but that could be caused or solved by these updates. I'd prefer to see a new line group which lists updates "rolling out over the next few days". It seems to be the same overall complexity to implement and it would be much much more informative. Hiding again seems like a step too far back to me.
