[Touch-packages] [Bug 2003756] Re: Cannot configure krb5-kdc on Ubuntu Jammy 22.04.01, "Could not execute systemctl: at /usr/bin/deb-systemd-invoke line 142."

2024-01-29 Thread Alexander Stohr
hey, i removed the "quiet" and did a bit of alternate outputs. the
action is 'start' for my failing 'xrdp'.

Job for xrdp.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status xrdp.service" and "journalctl -xeu xrdp.service" for
details.
Could not execute systemctl: - start at /usr/bin/deb-systemd-invoke line 143.

Bug description:
  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu Server 22.04.01 LTS. After
  installing the server and running all updates, I run the following
  command:

  apt -y install slapd ldap-utils schema2ldif sasl2-bin
  libsasl2-modules-gssapi-mit krb5-kdc-ldap krb5-admin-server krb5-kdc

  This will be installing krb5-kdc 1.19.2-2.

  This is in preparation for setting up an OpenLDAP server, a Kerberos
  server with an LDAP backend, and saslauthd for pass-through
  authentication. krb5-kdc was auto-selected when running the steps in
  the guide here in my development environment:
  https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/service-kerberos-with-openldap-backend
  When installing that, I get the following in the output:

  Setting up krb5-kdc (1.19.2-2) ...
  Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/krb5-kdc.service
→ /lib/systemd/system/krb5-kdc.service.
  Could not execute systemctl: at /usr/bin/deb-systemd-invoke line 142.

  I do get the prompts for the realm, kdc, and admin server hostnames,
  and they are reflected in /etc/krb5.conf. If I then run the
  following:

  dpkg-reconfigure krb5-kdc

  I am prompted for whether I want the package to create the Kerberos
  KDC configuration automatically, and when I say yes, it then repeats
  the following error:

  Could not execute systemctl: at /usr/bin/deb-systemd-invoke line 142.

  I cannot find any further debug in the syslog or anything to indicate
  what the root cause is; the list of packages here are all installed
  together on a separate development server where I experimented with
  the configuration I will be deploying here in production so I don't
  think it's incompatible packages in the install list, but I am open to
  feedback on that.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1835809] Re: AMD Ryzen 3000 series fails to boot

2019-07-30 Thread Alexander Stohr
A bunch of updates went public - the AGESA component update is still due as its
pushed to the end user via the integration and qualification pipeline of the
board vendors. It got said this will take several weeks.

  [Original Bug Text]

  On the new AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs, there is an issue with systemd
  preventing the boot process from completing. This issue does not
  affect the older systemd version in 18.04, but affects the 19.04
  version.

  I am currently testing a patch to systemd, derived from this pull request:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/12536

  This is a high severity issue, as I do not believe there is no
  potential workaround without either a firmware update or an ISO

  I have attached a rebase of the potential patch on the current 19.04
  version of systemd for reference. I will provide more details after

Maybe unrelated (but those communications channel might be worth watching for

Robert Hallock of AMD has announced a new beta driver for the chipset that
is/was available via google drive. It is said this fixes something relevant for
at least the game Destiny 2. As the test phase was closed already a quick

2019-07-22 Thread Alexander Stohr
AMD has pulled back their first BIOS/Microcode fix due to problems with
some boards switching down from PCI 4.0 to PCI 2.0 - the release
seemingly only went as far as the big board vendors. the board vendors
got order to not re-distribute that version in any form. sounds
reasonable to me. indeed its already indicated that AMD still hopes to
provide a solution in a near time frame.

Title:
  Add amd64/i386 retpoline support

Status in gcc-4.8 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gcc-4.8 source package in Trusty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  To mitigate Spectre Variant 2, gcc needs to have retpoline support
  (-mindirect-branch and -mfunction-return arguments on amd64 and i386).

  Packages with this will go into the proposed pockets but need to be
  published in the -security pockets for their respective releases.

  Patches for gcc-4.8 were pulled from H.J. Lu's backport branch to 4.9,
  available at https://github.com/hjl-tools/gcc/tree/hjl/indirect/gcc-
  4_9-branch/master . Upstream GCC does not seem to be applying patches
  to anything older than the gcc-6-branch. H.J. Lu is the author of the
  upstream retpoline commits as well.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-03-02 Thread Alexander Stohr
switching to "beta" version of gcc (Ubuntu 7.3.0-5ubuntu1~14.04.york0) 7.3.0
and rebuilding the kernel modules in question for 4.4.0-116 seemingly did the
job.

is this really what you wanted from a good amount of the end users by
publishing those kernel?

** Summary changed:

- 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)
+ 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04) by
an insufficient compiler!

** Also affects: gcc
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-03-02 Thread Alexander Stohr
are you sure it has arrived with _some_ gcc version already.

publications indicate its very experimental still and i can not see any
of the typical switches beeing honored by the gcc versions on my
machine. (and i was able to switch them forth and back using "update-
alternatives") needless to say that even after a few attempts a call to
"modinfo" does not at all report the "retpoline" option for the dkms
built nvidia kernel modules (using -384 on top of 4.4.0-116).

https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=GCC-7-Gets-Retpolines
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article=gcc8-mindirect-thunk=1

can you please be more specific with the compiler versions you are
using? please give exact versions. thank you.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2016-12-16 Thread Alexander Stohr
PS:
based on x11 log data (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) i tried out this:

sudo cat /dev/input/event6 | od -x

when moving the mouse new data arrived.
but no data arrived when hitting any button or when turning the mouse wheel.

checking other such input devices did not provide any
(useable/related/promising) result.

Title:
  Left mouse button stops working

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops
  and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron
  15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

  It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in
  gmail, by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a
  Firefox user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not
  happened if i dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible
  that the plugin is to blame.

  Symptom
  ===
  The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will
not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This
happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to
function as normal.

  When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log
  out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as
  normal.

  This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and
desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. I will
appreciate any soltion or workaround.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2016-12-16 Thread Alexander Stohr
i am running a fresh install of Ubunutu 16.04.1 i386 on top of Virtual Box
5.1.6 using Win7 i386 as host.
(with FreeDos as a VB-client on the same system i have the mouse just working.)
the hosting machine is accessed via RDP.

tests with console switching did not show any improvement.
checks with mouse or touchpad alternating did not show any improvement.

the mouse moves nice and tooltips or button highlights do appear.
just none of the buttons shows any reaction to my presses, neither from the
touch pad nor from the wired red-light based wheel mouse.

  Symptom
  ===

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1443853] Re: Ubuntu 14.10 ISO live boot in Oracle VirtualBox ends up with a corrupted display

2016-12-16 Thread Alexander Stohr
this problem again confirmed for Ubuntu 16.04.1 on i386 during the
install into virtual box 5.1.6

the amount of people affected is assumed to be high and thus even if
there is a work around (but not anybody gets it fast enough how to solve
that but rather assume its just broken) it still would serve the Linux
community much better if those issue is simply fixed and thus never
seen.

Bug description:
  (Content copied from "Ubuntu 14.10 ISO live boot ends up with a
  corrupted display" #13615 VirtualBox bug ticket, by piotrjurkiewicz)

  Booting up live session of Ubuntu MATE 14.10 and Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 from ISO
ends up with a corrupted screen. See the screenshot:
  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/186864347/ubu.png

  Switching back and forth to the tty7 (ctrl+alt+F1 and then alt+F7)
  fixes the display.

  I think that this might be a problem with resolution setting:

  ```
  00:00:31.226379 Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0,
pvVRAM= w=1152 h=400 bpp=0 cbLine=0x0, flags=0x1
  00:00:31.226399 UIFrameBuffer::RequestResize: Screen=0, Format=0,
BitsPerPixel=0, BytesPerLine=0, Size=1152x400, Sending to async-handler..
  00:00:31.226457 UIFrameBufferQImage::resizeEvent: Format=0, BitsPerPixel=0,
BytesPerLine=0, Size=1152x400
  00:00:31.226467 UIFrameBufferQImage::resizeEvent: Resizing to FALLBACK buffer
due to format is invalid..
  ```

  After switching back and forth to the tty7 (what fixes the display)
  the log says:

  ```
  00:00:31.226379 Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0,
pvVRAM= w=1152 h=400 bpp=0 cbLine=0x0, flags=0x1
  ```

  I have tested 4.3.18 and also the testbuild 4.3.19 r96825, it happens
  on both of them.
