[Touch-packages] [Bug 1931725] Re: initramfs-tools & kernel: use zstd as the default compression method

2021-10-19 Thread Eugene Romanenko
How to revert to old compression method for initramfs? Generating image
with zstd is extremely slow and takes long time on slow CPU.

Bug description:
Turns out that loading is always the slow part in loading initramfs
into memory and decompressing it since decompression is always the
final 10-20% or so of the task. It therefore makes sense to use a
good compressor that shrinks the initramfs as much as possible with
  little decompression overhead.

Benchmarking zstd vs lz4 shows that while zstd can be ~5x slower in
decompression, the image size is much smaller with zstd than lz4, and
since ~80-90% of the boot time is loading the image it makes sense to
  use zstd.

Attached is a libreoffice spread sheet showing typical load and
decompression times for a fairly standard 3.4 GHZ intel box with data
for load times for a 5400 RPM, 7200 RPM and SATA SSD drives.

The conclusions from the test results (attached) show:

  1. Loading time is always significantly slower than decompression time.
  2. ZSTD is 5x slower than LZ4 in decompression speed but produces far
  better compressed images
  3. Given that loading time is the major factor in loading +
decompression, ZSTD is best for kernel and initramfs boot timings.

  (Also refer to https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~cking/boot-speed-
eoan-5.3/kernel-compression-method.txt for some raw data on drive load
speeds for the same UEFI box I did a couple of years ago).

amd64 supports zstd, but s390x does not. Will use this bug to enable
  zstd support on s390x.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1765304] Re: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox (by lowering & raising window whenever they're focused)

2019-01-11 Thread Eugene Romanenko
With this update was landed in bionic, layout indicator issue arisen:

After screen unlock, layout indicator doesn't show layout letters (en, ru,
etc).
See attached pic.
Also, when clicked to layout indicator, in drop down menu no layout selected
with dot.
Layout letters appears after switching layout or switching windows.

  ---

tl;dr: starting in Ubuntu 18.04, "ibus" seems to lower and raise
Firefox, whenever the user tries to focus an
field on a web page. This is not a regression in Firefox, as the same
Firefox version runs just fine in Ubuntu 17.10 -- it seems to be a bug
in ibus, because it only happens (in 18.04) when the environmental
variable GTK_IM_MODULE is at its default value (which is "ibus"). It
had this same value in 17.10 but the bug didn't happen there; hence,
I'm guessing there was a change in ibus (or a related package) that
  caused this breakage / lowering+raising.

This is pretty bad, because in some cases, the focus-loss can mean
users are simply unable to fill in password fields that previously
were working fine. (see "ACTUAL RESULTS" below)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE #1, via "BitWarden" Firefox extension:
  =
   1. Start Firefox. (fresh profile if you like)
   2. Install BitWarden from
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bitwarden-password-manager/
   3. Click the BitWarden toolbar icon to spawn a menu-pane.
   4. Click "Log in" at the bottom of that pane.
   5. Click the "Master Password" field.

  ACTUAL RESULTS:
The menu pane disappears as soon as the Master Password field receives focus.
  EXPECTED RESULTS:
I should be able to type in a password; pane shouldn't disappear.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE #2, via Reddit:
  =
   1. Visit https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/ (or any reddit page)
   2. Click "Log in or sign up in seconds" at the extreme upper right of the
page.
(click the "Log in" part of that sentence)
   3. Try to click the password field (or "tab" into it) and type in some text.

  ACTUAL RESULTS:
Try as you might, the password field never receives focus.
  EXPECTED RESULTS:
Password field should accept focus & let me type text into it.

If I run firefox from the command line with env var GTK_IM_MODULE="",
then I get "expected results". But with the default value of that env
var, I get "actual results" (broken behavior, unable to enter
  passwords).

I initially reported this in Firefox, here:
  https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1451466 (with a few
dependent bugs for the usage-specific STR quoted above). But I think
it's a bug in ibus, hence filing here now.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1557981] Re: Selected-Tab Hard to Distinguish in Default Ambiance Theme

2018-03-23 Thread Eugene Romanenko
Digged little bit into gtk3 css-ing and created workaround:

Add to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css:

.nautilus-window notebook tab:checked {
background-image: linear-gradient(to top, @selected_bg_color,
alpha(@bg_color, 0) 3px);
}

Active tab will be underlined with theme color. Remove ".nautilus-window" to
affect any tabs, not just content tabs in Nautilus window.

Works in 18.04.

Nautilus.

For example, in Adwaita theme, current tab underlined with theme
selection color and clearly visible. Please add such pronounce in

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1733557] Re: Login screen showing Authentication Failure Switch to greeter...

2018-02-20 Thread Eugene Romanenko
Appears on 16.04.3 after updating Unity to latest packages.
Also on 17.10 with installed unity-session.

For me, this issue appears after switching to another user.

Steps to reproduce (must be more than one local users on system, eg. "bob",
"alice"):
1. Login under bob.
2. Via upper-right menu switch to "alice".
3. On greeter screen setect "alice", login under alice.
4. Logout, return to greeter screen.
5. Select bob (already logged in). Enter password.
6. Lock screen. Issue appeared.
Issue appeared on every screen lock.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1733557] Re: Login screen showing Authentication Failed Switch to greeter...

2018-01-06 Thread Eugene Romanenko
Same on 16.04.3 after updating Unity to latest proposed packages.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1579403] Re: Random characters in screen text suddenly disappear after wake from sleep or switching user

I think it related to the intel driver, as I never seen such problem on
nvidia-based desktop PC.
