I am not 100 % sure, but I think this worked:

Double-tapping on one of the articles in the middle column would zoom to
it.

I synced all my contacts and calendar from memotoo.com using the
syncevolution command line.

I don’t see the birthdays in the addressbook app. But I can see that
they are present in the local addressbook:

syncevolution --export --backend=evolution-contacts --luids my-id

The exported item contains a BDAY entry.

  The calendar app does not display birthdays from my address book. They
  are stored in the contacts, so I guess they should be in the virtual
  Birthdays and Anniversaries calendar, but the calendar app does not
  display any events from that calendar.
