Just hit the same bug : got the same :"inflate returned -3" while rsync'ing an 8G VM disk .vdi file from a Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS server to a Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS one Removed the -z flag sis the trick as well

Removing the -z flag works around the issue.
