Title:
The image is distorted while use iGPU rendering and output via AMD GPU

Status in OEM Priority Project:
  Fix Released
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in mesa source package in Focal:
  Fix Released
Status in mesa source package in Hirsute:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Image is distorted with PRIME, caused by mismatch in stride alignment between
intel and amdgpu/nvidia after intel bumped the alignment to 256 bytes.

  [Fix]
Upstream fixed it in 21.2-series, and backport to 21.0.x needs four commits
in total.

  [Test case]
  1. Connect a monitor on the AMD GPU.
  2. Power on the system and boot into OS.
  3. Run below command to launch glxgears
  Cmd> DRI_PRIME=1 glxgears -info

  * Expected result
The image is not distorted while running the glxgears

  * Actual result
The image is distorted while running the glxgears

  [Where things might go wrong]
This is a regression caused by the intel driver, so the backports merely fix
what got broken. Regressions would only manifest on hybrid graphics platforms.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1937988] Re: The image is distorted while use iGPU rendering and output via AMD GPU

2021-08-03 Thread Shengyao Xue
the fix in https://launchpad.net/~xueshengyao/+archive/ubuntu/mesa is
much easier for Focal(only 2 lines changed), but it was based on a
workaround cannot upstream.

And the latest upstream mesa fixed this issue, so I cherry-picked 4 Mesa's
upstream commits to Focal:

a3a4517f4147a0a7c1b34a4bcd42de45d552df5f

55d1b8f929bbba58734bc7b1f79a6f53ab5aa0e8

0e856b95c59d4b9d1909bd96eca0296dd14b41ff

f1a66e7c90ceb4796085989d0d8374689753121e

and made a new package:

https://launchpad.net/~xueshengyao/+archive/ubuntu/mesa2

it fixed this issue in my testing.

I also attached the debdiff.

@Timo, could you please help on the SRU process? many thanks.

the fix commit not upstream to mesa yet, after it lands to upstream, we
can backport the commit in to Ubuntu and start SRU process. I tried
backport the commit to Focal's mesa, it works.

On Cmedia Audio, unusable SPDIF can be selected as output from PulseAudio.

  [Fix]
Disable IEC958 (SPDIF) through ALSA UCM.

  [Test]
With the UCM applied, `pactl` and audio panel in gnome-control-center no
longer have SPDIF option.

  [Where problems will occur]
"Cmedia Audio" is the sound card name of this usb audio dongle, and this
string is got from usb string descriptor, that is to say the "Cmedia Audio" is
hard-coded in the firmware of that usb dongle.
Not all Cmedia usb audio dongle use "Cmedia Audio", most of the dongles don't
set string descriptor, then the audio driver sets a generic name "USB Audio
Device" for them, if a dongle has string descriptor, it may have different
string like "C-Media USB Headphone Set", and all dongles I met before don't
have SPDIF interface.
So If this SRU could introduce regression, it will happen on a Cmedia usb
audio dongle which also hard-codes the "Cmedia Audio" in the string descriptor
and it has SPDIF interface on it, after this SRU, users couldn't find the SPDIF
playback device from the gnome-sound-setting. But this regression chance is
very low since it is very rare a cmedia usb audio dongle uses "Cmedia Audio" in
the string descriptor and it is very rare a usb audio dongle has SPDIF
interface. So far we haven't met such a cmedia usb audio dongle.

On the LENOVO AMD Renoir machines, there is a digital mic directly
connected to the APU instead of the codec, so there are two separate
sound cards in the system, one is for analogue codec driven by hda
driver, the other is for the dmic driven by ASoC acp driver.

  The current audio stack (pulseaudio + alsa-ucm-conf + alsa-lib) doesn't
support this design yet, it could support all audio devices on the codec
well, but it doesn't support that dmic well. In the gnome-control-center,
the dmic becomes two input devices: analog input and multichannel input,
and users can only record sound from analog input, the multichannel input
can't function at all. Besides this issue, there is another issue, after
users plug an external mic, the external mic can't replace the dmic
automatically, this gives users a bad experience since this behaviour is
different from the other audio designs.

driver, the other is for the dmic driven by ASoC acp driver.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On some I+N machines (inlcuding lenovo and dell machines), after
setting the graphic mode to perofermance mode, and open the gnome
sound seting, run suspend/resume test, the audio devices will
disappear from UI, instead a dummy audio shows on the UI, and from
then on, the audio can't work anymore.

  [Fix]
The root cause is after resuming, the pulseaudio try to recover the
PCM device, but at that moment, the devices nodes at /dev/snd/ are
not accessible yet sometimes, it will make snd_pcm_open fail and
the pulseaudio will calll unload_module to unload alsa audio card.
I cherrpicked a fix from upstream, the fix adds retry and pa_msleep(),
this will retry the snd_pcm_open() a couple of times if it fails.

  [Test Case]
Install the pulseaudio wit this fix, set the graphic mode to
performance mode, open the sound setting, then run suspend/resume 90
times, after test check the audio devices on the UI, the speaker,
digital mic are still on the UI, and they could work well.

  [Regression Risk]
Low, this SRU just add retry and pa_msleep(), if the snd_pcm_open()
doesn't fail, this patch will not introduce any change, if snd_pcm_open()
fails, it just retry a couple of times, so it will not introduce the
  regression in theory.

2020-07-21 Thread Shengyao Xue
I can reproduce this issue with the original pulseaudio on a ThinkPad
P14s, and after I opened focal-proposed channel and updated the
pulseaudio package, this issue was fixed.

The real bug should not be bug #10306, but is bug #16602.

also there is a similar bug:

Bug description:
Touchpad of Yoda2 doesn't work well via PS/2 mode, most time the data is
  lost sync via PS/2.

I have made a patch in upstream/Ubuntu 4.15/4.13 kernels to force
  touchpad using SMBus mode.
SMBus mode requires i2c-i801 kernel module which is in modprobe
blacklist in Ubuntu 18.04/16.04. User has to remove i2c-i801 manually.

i2c-i801 in blacklist is a very old workaround to fix HP compaq nc6000
(Bug #10306), this module should be removed from blacklist.
