  Google reCaptcha does not work in browser

Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I was not able to post a reply on xda developers forum. Recaptcha told
  me that the browser does not support the widget. It seemed strange
  since this is a commonly used captcha framework.

  However, testing with the following test page
  https://patrickhlauke.github.io/recaptcha/ revealed that reCaptcha is
  not working at ll in the Ubuntu Browser.

  Since this is an important verification method these days I would
  assume someone needs to talk to Google to either allow our User-Agent,
  or we must fake once again the UA string in some way. This is really a
  bad thing I know. But what does it help?

  install resolvconf and disable systemd-resolved, resolvonf keeps
  putting "nameserver 127.0.0.53" in /etc/resolv.conf. To get rid of
  that behavior, I disabled resolvconf-pull-resolved.path. Now
  resolvconf doesn't put any nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf, even
  though networkd's DHCP client has correctly stored the DNS server in

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * networkd fails to renew a lease, specifically it fails to change IPv4
address via DHCP renew/rebind.
   * networkd relies on a kernel feature to promote secondary IPv4 address to
primary, upon primary address lease expiry.
   * this sysctl tunable was not enabled by default in systemd.

  [Test Case]

  Add a device, and assign two IPv4 addresses. First one, with a short
  lease time. Second one, with a different ip and a longer lease time.
  Second one should be treated as secondary ip address, and upon expiry
  of the first one, should be promoted and become primary ip address.
  The below scripted instructions simulate this:

  sudo ip link add name testleases type dummy

  sudo ip address add 192.0.2.10/27 dev testleases \
    valid_lft 5 preferred_lft 5

  sudo ip address add 192.0.2.11/27 dev testleases \
    valid_lft 11 preferred_lft 11

  ip address list dev testleases | \
  grep -q 'inet 192.0.2.10/27 scope global dynamic testleases' \
  && echo ok || echo not ok

  ip address list dev testleases | \
  grep -q 'inet 192.0.2.11/27 scope global secondary dynamic testleases' \
  && echo ok || echo not ok

  sleep 6

  ip address list dev testleases | \
  grep -q 'inet 192.0.2.11/27 scope global dynamic testleases' \
  && echo ok || echo not ok

  sudo ip link del dev testleases

  [Regression Potential]

   * This changes the default kernel behaviour, previously upon expiry
  of the primary address, secondary addresses were removed as well.
  Which is imho silly.

  * comparing networkd renewal with isc-dhcp renewal the semantics are
  quite different. Upon acquiring new ip address, isc-dhcp would
  instantly flush existing ip address, and add a new one. Networkd add
  the new address as secondary, and waits for old one to expire first
  before promoting / switching to using the new ip address. IMHO kernel
  should have an API to promote secondary ip address to a primary one.

  * This update also applies other safe-looking options, which are
  currently also already applied via sysctls shipped in other packages

  # Source route verification
  net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1
  net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1

  # Do not accept source routing
  net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0
  net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_source_route = 0

  # Enable hard and soft link protection
  fs.protected_hardlinks = 1
  fs.protected_symlinks = 1

  * This update also applies the following upstream/bufferbloat.net
  recommended setting

  # Fair Queue CoDel packet scheduler to fight bufferbloat
  net.core.default_qdisc = fq_codel

  * [~racb] There are complex network setups out there, such as HA with
  corosync/pacemaker, OpenStack Neutron, and that kind of thing. If this
  fix were SRU'd, will all of these things in the wild cope with this
  sysctl change?

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug report

  Hi there,
  we found a replicable issue that involves the Ubuntu Core networking and
causes complete loss of connectivity.
  We run a custom board with ubuntu core: the architecure is amrhf.
  We replicated this issue with an official Ubuntu Core image on a Raspberry
Pi: other platform was been tested.
  It shows that it is a snap core problem which interests networkd: we use the
default network stack based on networkd + netplan.

  Below steps to replicate the issue.

  1)Setup a dhcp server for lease of about some minutes (i.e 10 minutes).
  2)Boot the board and wait for get an ip from dhcp server
  3)Before the lease expires, set a reservation for a different ip address

  Depending on lease duration before the lease expires( for 10 minute we have 2
minutes before ), networkd configure the new address in addition to the
previous one.
  When the lease expire both ip address ( the prevoius and the new one )
disappear from the interested network interface.
  Depending on lease duration before the second lease expires ( for 10 minure
we have 2 minutes before ) networkd configure only the new ip address on the
network interface and the ping toward an outside host work properly.

  During the test the dhcp server records correctly leases and their
  duration.

  We check directly from console the network interface setting with the
  tool ip, checking continuously the value for

Bug description:
  I have Ubuntu Natty 11.04 and a Nokia N81 (Symbian S60v3.1). In Ubuntu
  10.04 (Lucid) and 10.10 (Maverick) bluetooth file transfers do work
  fast and stable on my hardware. Since Natty it stopped working all
  together!

  UPDATE 26-2-2012: everything works again if the executable
  /usr/sbin/bluetoothd (4.91 in Natty) is replaced with 4.84 or earlier.
  I verified this workaround on several machines and with the Live-CD of
  Natty. Precise alpha 2 is affected too. (see also my comment 30 below)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1674399] Re: OpenSSL CPU detection for AMD Ryzen CPUs

2017-06-02 Thread William Grant
I've been running the fixed OpenSSL on my artful Ryzen desktop, zesty
Haswell-U laptop and xenial Sandy Bridge server and its VMs for two
weeks without incident. These hosts include a variety of VPN clients,
HTTPS clients, HTTPS servers, SSH clients and servers, etc. The SRUs for
all series build successfully on i386 and amd64 on Ryzen and Apollo Lake
(I managed to acquire some hardware), the two shipping platforms that
were exposed to the previous regression, and which FTBFS with the
original SRU due to the test suite picking up the bug.

  64bit only (Confirmed with AMD representative). Current OpenSSL
  version in Ryzens still calls SHA for SSSE3 routine as result a number

  * Program to performs the CPUID check:

  Reference :
  https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-sha-extensions

  ... Availability of the Intel® SHA Extensions on a particular
  processor can be determined by checking the SHA CPUID bit in
  CPUID.(EAX=07H, ECX=0):EBX.SHA [bit 29]. The following C function,
  using inline assembly, performs the CPUID check:

  --
  int CheckForIntelShaExtensions() {
     int a, b, c, d;

     // Look for CPUID.7.0.EBX[29]
     // EAX = 7, ECX = 0
     a = 7;
     c = 0;

     asm volatile ("cpuid"
  :"=a"(a), "=b"(b), "=c"(c), "=d"(d)
  :"a"(a), "c"(c)
     );

     // Intel® SHA Extensions feature bit is EBX[29]
     return ((b >> 29) & 1);
  }
  --

  On CPU with sha_ni the program return "1". Otherwise it return "0".

  [Test Case]

   * Reproducible with Xenial/Zesty/Artful release.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1674399] Re: OpenSSL CPU detection for AMD Ryzen CPUs

2017-05-19 Thread William Grant
Fortunately the OpenSSL test suite also fails when run during the build
on Ryzen. It turns out that the AES-NI+SHA-NI AES-CBC+SHA{1,256}
implementations are both broken, so
https://github.com/openssl/openssl/commit/08d09628d2c9f3ef599399d8cad021a07ab98347
needs to be backported too. I guess nobody's seriously used Ubuntu on
Goldmont.

I've uploaded fixed SRU test builds to
https://launchpad.net/~wgrant/+archive/ubuntu/experimental/+packages?field.name_filter=openssl,
and they all build and test successfully on i386 and amd64 on Ryzen. At
least 9.3~ppa1 even lets OpenVPN connect, with accelerated hashing. I
don't think we really need to dig up a Goldmont device from somewhere,
but if someone has one handy...

libssl1.0.0 1.0.2g-1ubuntu9.2 breaks OpenVPN (2.4.0-5ubuntu1 or
2.3.11-1ubuntu2) connections to Canonical's VPN on my Ryzen 7 1700X
desktop running Linux 4.10.0-21-generic. In UDP mode the server stops
responding during TLS negotiation, and in TCP mode the server closes the
connection at the same stage. Downgrading to ubuntu9.1 fixes it.
artful's 1.0.2g-1ubuntu12 is broken in the same way. The HMAC in use by
the VPN is SHA-1.

  NM changed its method of setting routes on systems, and no longer attaches a
metric value specific to the type of device being used. These values were used
to prioritize connections, so that for example, when connected to both wired
and wireless at the same time, wired can be used in priority over wireless
without incurring packet loss.
  Currently, when connected to both wired and wireless are connected to the
same subnet, the user may notice connectivity issues since packets are sent in
a round-robin fashion over all default routes on the same subnet with the same
metric.

  [Test Case]
  1- Connect to a wireless network.
  2- Connect to the same network over Ethernet both connections should come up
on the same subnet.
  3- Make sure there is no packet loss, and that there are specific metric
values for each default route, as displayed by 'ip route'.

  [Regression Potential]
  Since handling default routes properly involves correcting the behavior for
all device types, VPN behavior may change to pick up the default routes in all
cases, over a wired connection. It's also possible that a connection pick up
the default route when it is not meant to.

  ---

  With Vivid, having two connections to the same network subnet is
  unstable due to missing metrics for local networks.

  Example:

  Being connected to 192.168.1.0/24 via both wired and wireless will
  cause connectivity issues as sent packets hop between the two
  interfaces.

  It used to be that this wasn't an issue. I would go between work and
  home and plug in and my machine would automatically connect to
  wireless and it would use the lower metric ethernet interface for all
  communications, while the wlan interface would remain connected but
  unused.

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

  When generating a new initramfs there is no check for available free
  space, subsequently its possible for update-initramfs to fail due to a
  lack of free space. This is resulting in package installation
  failures for initramfs-tools.  For example:

  Setting up initramfs-tools (0.98.8ubuntu3) ...
  update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
  Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic

  gzip: stdout: No space left on device
  E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 gzip 1
  update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic
  dpkg: error processing initramfs-tools (--configure):
   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

  WORKAROUND:

  Remove unused kernels using computer janitor (not in repositories for
  14.04 or later) or manually free space on your partition containing
  the /boot file system.

I've unpublished the affected libc6 versions (2.15-0ubuntu10.14,
2.19-0ubuntu6.8, 2.21-0ubuntu4.2).

For machines that have already upgraded, restarting affected processes
or rebooting the whole system should resolve any problems.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1549363] Re: Unprivileged LXC will not start after today's updates

2016-02-25 Thread William Grant
I grabbed 2.0.0~rc3-0ubuntu2 before I wrote those comments, as I noticed
the cgfs changes. My last reboot was this morning, between upgrading to
-0ubuntu1 and -0ubuntu2, so I think the apparmor stuff is still broken.
The profile doesn't even appear if I explicitly apparmor_parser -r, -a,
-R in any combination, though --debug definitely shows it parsing that
file. It's very, very weird.

This is all with Linux 4.4.0-7, since I hadn't noticed 4.4.0-8 sitting
in -proposed. I might retry with that.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1549363] Re: Unprivileged LXC will not start after today's updates

2016-02-25 Thread William Grant
lxc-container-default-cgns doesn't show up in apparmor_status, despite
the other three being there.

If I hack a container's config to use lxc-container-default rather than
lxc-container-default-cgns, hack that profile to allow cgfs, and start
that container, lxc-container-default-cgns shows up and other unmodified
containers can now start. Weird.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1549363] Re: Unprivileged LXC will not start after today's updates

2016-02-25 Thread William Grant
The cgroup errors go away if I manually create and chown a few parent
cgroups, but then the apparmor error returns.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1542597] Re: dnsmasq breaks Steam downloads on Comcast

2016-02-05 Thread William Grant
** No longer affects: dnsmasq

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to dnsmasq in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1542597

Title:
  dnsmasq breaks Steam downloads on Comcast

Status in dnsmasq package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  TL;DR: With dnsmasq configured, "nslookup
  cdn.cs.comcast.steampowered.com" (rather, the query, not nslookup
  itself) hangs. As a result of the DNS query hanging, Steam is unable
  to download any game content.

  Longer explanation, which I posted on the Steam forum at
  http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/412446292762583371/ to
  help other users:

  I had a persistent problem with Steam not downloading games on Ubuntu,
  even on the same machine and same network where it worked fine under
  Windows (both 7 and 10). Here's an explanation of why and how to fix
  it, since most people will not be able to diagnose it.

  Background:

  Like most big data providers, Steam has a lot of servers hosted at
  various ISPs. When you download a game, you're directed to servers
  that are topologically closer to you--usually ones hosted by the ISP
  you use. In my case, this is Comcast, and Steam uses the host name
  cdn.comcast.cs.steampowered.com.

  Ubuntu Desktop uses a caching DNS server called dnsmasq. Besides
  providing caching services, it captures advertised hostnames on the
  network, allowing you to refer to other machines by name without
  having to set up DNS.

  Symptom:

  You'll get dialog windows and messages in the Steam log file saying
  that connections timed out. No downloads will actually work.

  Interestingly, nowhere does it explicitly tell you that it's actually
  the DNS query that's timing out, as opposed to the connection to the
  actual content server. This confused me quite a bit.

  The problem:

  Steam's DNS and dnsmasq don't get along. The list of DNS records for
  cdn.comcast.cs.steampowered.com is long enough that the response
  doesn't fit in a UDP packet. Normally this is retried transparently
  over TCP and works fine. However, dnsmasq stalls and times out on this
  request. (Don't ask me why. I haven't debugged it--yet.) As a result,
  all attempts to connect to the Steam content servers fail, and no
  downloads occur.

  Note: I've only run the Steam client on Ubuntu 14.10 and 15.04. I do
  not know whether this problem affects other versions.

  Workaround:

  The obvious workaround is to stop using dnsmasq. However, it's
  somewhat hardwired into Ubuntu. Here's what I did:

  # apt-get install unbound # do this first or you'll be sad
  # cd /etc/NetworkManager
  # service NetworkManager stop
  # vi NetworkManager.conf # or whatever editor you want; I don't care
  [change "dns=dnsmasq" to "dns=unbound"]
  # rm /etc/resolv.conf # don't forget this
  # service NetworkManager start

  Now all your DNS queries should go through your local unbound server
  (at 127.0.0.1 a.k.a. localhost), retries over TCP should work as
  expected, and Steam should be able to download just fine. You can test
  it with:

  # nslookup cdn.comcast.cs.steampowered.com

  If that hangs or returns SERVFAIL or REFUSED, you still have a
  problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1461834] Re: 1024-bit signing keys should be deprecated

2015-07-29 Thread William Grant
Launchpad has used 4096-bit RSA keys for new PPAs since bug #1240681 was
fixed. Allowing PPA owners to replace the old 1024-bit keys is bug
#1331914.

  1024-bit RSA was deprecated years ago by NIST[1], Microsoft[2] and

  1024-bit signing keys are insufficient to guarantee the authenticity
  of software distributed from Launchpad.net including PPAs. There
  should be a mechanism to refuse signing keys below a minimum key
  length based on key type. 1024-bit signing keys should be deprecated
  and removed from Launchpad.net itself ASAP. Future projects and PPAs
  should be disallowed from using 1024-bit signing keys.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1419554] [NEW] Can't upgrade procps in LXC 1.1

2015-02-08 Thread William Grant
Public bug reported:

LXC 1.1 on vivid has started giving privileged containers a read-only
/sys, which prevents Ubuntu's procps Upstart job from starting. This
isn't normally too problematic, except that the weekend's procps SRU's
postinst tries to start the job and causes the upgrade to fail.

Disabling the procps postinst makes apt usable again.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1415481] Re: default mmap_min_addr for arm64 prevents running arm32 applications

Status in procps package in Ubuntu:

Status in procps source package in Utopic:

Bug description:
  [ SRU Justification ]
  Executing 32-bit arm binaries as user fails on arm64. Turns out, this is bad.

  [ Test Case ]
  Grab a 32-bit binary (either multiarch via armhf, or compile a quick static
hello) and try to run it. Also, check /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr is set to 32k
instead of 64k after boot.

  [ Regression Potential ]
  Shouldn't be any issue with 4k pagesize kernels, and this was already the
default on 32-bit ARM for the same reasons. It could, potentially, mean that
the zero page is no longer entirely protected from mmap when running a 64k
pagesize kernel, however we don't currently ship such a kernel, preferring
instead to have 32-bit compatibility.

  [ Original Bug Report ]
  Executing 32-bit arm binaries as user fails on arm64:

  # file hello
  hello: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, ARM, EABI5 version 1 (SYSV),
  statically linked, for GNU/Linux 2.6.32,
  BuildID[sha1]=c37a3b366d645eee600963a535370fa0bad9b2c0, not stripped
  # ./hello
  hello world
  # su - linaro
  $ /root/hello
  Segmentation fault

  Root cause was identified to /etc/sysctl.d/10-zeropage.conf, which is
  set on arm64 to 65536. To run legacy binaries, this should be set to
  32768 like on armhf anr armel.

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

  When generating a new initramfs there is no check for available free
  space, subsequently its possible for update-initramfs to fail due to a
  lack of free space. This is resulting in package installation
  failures for initramfs-tools.  For example:

  Setting up initramfs-tools (0.98.8ubuntu3) ...
  update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
  Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic

  gzip: stdout: No space left on device
  E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 gzip 1
  update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic
  dpkg: error processing initramfs-tools (--configure):
   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

  WORKAROUND:

  Remove unused kernels using computer janitor or manually free space on
  your partition containing the /boot file system.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1171047] Re: update-manager times out checking for updates

2014-09-01 Thread William Grant
Launchpad now writes out Translation-en.bz2 for PPAs and includes it in
Release, preventing apt from probing. This will gradually roll out to
all existing PPAs as new packages are uploaded to them.

  update-manager times out checking for updates

Status in Launchpad itself:
  Fix Released
Status in “apt” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I've bought a number of humble bundle games that were activated
  through the software centre, so I have quite a lot of sources in apt.
  The server that they come from is so terribly slow to fetch from that
  it causes the update manager to time out when checking for updates.

  See the attached file for the timestamped output from apt-get update,
  and you'll see that while it's generally slow (multiple seconds
  between requests once the normal speed ones are dealt with) there is
  one that takes about 12 minutes to respond at all (13:21:48 to
  13:34:12)

  This means that I can't update through the ubuntu update manager, nor
  does it tell me when updates are available.

  My internet is quite good, the first lot of sources complete in ~10
  seconds, the problem seems to be at the private-ppa.launchpad.net
  server end. However, this wouldn't be such an issue if the update
  manager didn't time out (but really the solution is to fix the apt
  servers.)

 Will this change help for non-en locales?

Yes.

If no translations are listed in Release, apt probes for en and all of
the enabled languages. As soon as even a single Translation-* file is
listed, the probing is disabled.

  Modem can not be initialized by using modem manager. wvdial option is
  working for the modem.

  In the wvdial conf modem port seems as /dev/ttyUSB0 (working port)
  according to trial but in modemmanager gui it seems as /dev/ttyUSB1

  Working wvdial.conf:

  [Dialer 3g]
  Init2 = AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,mgb

  Baud = 115200
  New PPPD = yes
  Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0

  [Dialer pin]
  Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
