(The information reported by "ubuntu-bug xorg" was collected with the headset plugged in.) I tested this behaviour with Firefox, GNOME Terminal, and Nautilus as the primary window. In the case of Nautilus the icon under the mouse cursor is selected, and moves with the mouse cursor. In the case of the other two programs text is selected when the mouse moves. I see the same behaviour when the mouse (a Logitec also) is unplugged and the inbuilt trackpad is used to move the mouse cursor. Sorry, I am not going to take a few hours out of my workday to test this issue, especially when coupled with the chance of bricking my machine with a live dev-release of the OS. However, on a brighter note, the issue seems resolved for me with Ubuntu 14.04.2 using the 3.13.0-45-generic kernel. I discovered that the headset worked normally sometime this month.
