Bug description:
  Sound from my headphones disappears when the volume slider is around
  30% along.

  A look at alsamixer in the terminal shows the PCM value is 0<>0 on the audio 
device. 
  The slider in Ubuntu's desktop environment is at 100% when alsamixer shows  
PCM  is at 100<>100 or Item: PCM dB gain: -0.06, -0.06
  The slider is at 30% or so volume when I cease hearing anything and the PCM 
is at 0<>0 or Item: PCM dB gain: -28.19, -28.19.

Wow thats from 2014. Totally different computer running 20.04 now.
That said, the volume settings were flakey in the asus mobo even on ubuntu 
19.10.
Resolved by chucking it.
