v14.04 screen garbled upon restart with external monitor

Bug description:
I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a Acer Aspire One 722. Everything
works fine on the laptop by itself. But if I connect the laptop to an
external monitor (a HDTV in this instance) via a HDMI cable, the
display on the laptop screen and on the external monitor work fine:

  1) until I close the screen of the laptop while the laptp is still
on, let it go to sleep, and then open the screen and restart. At that
point the laptop and external montor screens are black with some
garbled characters. There is no way to recover the laptop but shut it
down and perform a cold boot.

  2) and continue to do so if I use the suspend command (from the drop
down menu from the top right corner of the screen). The laptop and the
external monitor go dark when the computer suspends. Upon waking both
the laptop screen and the external monitor work fine. Needless to say
closing the lid after using the suspend command makes no difference.

Any clues on what could be happening when I close the lid of the
  laptop to suspend the laptop?

Sounds like it may be a video driver bug. Let's start by collecting
information on your system. If you would, please open a terminal
application and type the command apport-collect 1414230. This will
(hopefully) gather information on your system hardware and software
configuration and attach it to this bug for further analysis.

the laptop and external montor screens are black with some garbled
characters. There is no way to recover the laptop but shut it down and
  perform a cold boot.

Any clues on what could be happening when I close the lid of the laptop
  to suspend the laptop?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1414230] Re: v14.04 screen garbled upon restart with external monitor

2015-01-24 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Sounds like it may be a video driver bug. Let's start by collecting
information on your system. If you would, please open a terminal
application and type the command apport-collect 1414230. This will
(hopefully) gather information on your system hardware and software
configuration and attach it to this bug for further analysis.

Title:
v14.04 screen garbled upon restart with external monitor

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
