In Spain it is customary to have two surnames, both necessary for

  the second surname.

When importing the contacts from gmail, it seems the first surname is

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1548783] Re: Spanish surnames incorrectly imported and discarded

2016-05-31 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
No, you can’t address an issue that is specific to one set of people by
changing the UI translation for a different set of people. Specifically,
translating “middle name” and “surname” to “apellido paterno” and
“apellido materno” respectively in Spanish (a) wouldn’t help any
Spaniard who is in the address book of anyone who doesn’t use Spanish as
their UI language, and (b) would be misleading for every non-Spanish
person who has a middle name in the address book of someone who *does*
use Spanish as their UI language. In addition, it would be (c)
misleading for every Spaniard born since 1999 whose parents had decided
to put the mother’s name first, father’s name second, and (d)
inappropriate for Hispanic Americans who really do have a middle name.

Should to solution then translate "last name" and "middle name" to some
specific in Spanish languages? But keeping the order to be displayed
correct.

Yes, in Spain both surnames are used for legal purposes. Both the passport
and the national ID document list the two surnames.

In Spain (and I could imagine in other Spanish-speaking countries too)
there is no such thing as last name: it's 1) given name 2) 2x surnames.

As per the example in the original bug description:

Jordi López Echevarría

Given name: Jordi (one given name)
Surnames: López Echevarría (surname-father + surname-mother)

There isn't a concept of middle name for this particular bug report, and
even those persons with a composite given name e.g. "José María", that's
considered their full given name, to which the surnames are appended. E.g.
following the example, Jordi's brother name could be:

Given name: José María (one given name, no middle name)
Surnames: López Echevarría (surname-father + surname-mother)

@victor what do you use as last name on your passport? Do you have two
last names on your passport?

On Brazil even that we have , when filling
the passport they ask for "name" "middle-name" "last-name", some people
had more than one middle-name but "last name" is always only one.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1548783] Re: Spanish surnames incorrectly imported and discarded

2016-05-30 Thread Renato Araujo Oliveira Filho
The names are already splitted wen importing from google.

Google allow you to enter the full name once but it split the name
automatically based on spaces, or you can expand the name field and
enter each part of the name individually.

Since the field name on EDS database has a separated field for each part
of the name, in the previous version we already saved the "last name" on
the last-name field we can not change that. If you want the last name to
be the middle name you need to move it manually to the correct field.

In Brazil we have the same problem, our names has 3 parts
. All contacts created by me on the previous
version was created with . This is common to use
as last name in any kind of document. Now in the new
version if you want you can add the to your contacts. But
if you used the in previous version there is no other way
than edit it and move it to middle name.

Are we simply importing the contact wrong? We allow fields to have
spaces in them, so just don't truncate the value when it comes in. I
don't see that google has any separate fields for this.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1548783] Re: Spanish surnames incorrectly imported and discarded

2016-05-27 Thread Víctor R . Ruiz
I was about to translate "Middle name" to Spanish and found a
fundamental problem with the "middle name". In Spanish, we have at least
a first name and two family names (father's and mother's). Middle name
is not a family name, but a second name.

So, let's have a contact that was added with the old version of the app,
only allowing the first family name, e.g. Pau Gasol. To add the second
last name with the new version of the app, the middle name field must be
added, and then we have: "Pau" "Gasol". And to be
displayed properly, we must move "Gasol" to middle name and write "Sáez"
in the last name field.

IMHO, middle name is not a proper alternative for a second last name
field that should appear after last name one.

Title:
Spanish surnames incorrectly imported and discarded

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in address-book-app package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
In Spain it is customary to have two surnames, both necessary for
  legal effects. As an example:

  Jordi López Echevarría

Where the first is the given name, followed by the first surname and
  the second surname.

When importing the contacts from gmail, it seems the first surname is
being discarded (I assume they are treated as middle name?), resulting
in an incorrect contact name in the Ubuntu address book. e.g.:

  Jordi Echevarría

I'm not sure whether Google sync uses vcard or another protocol, but
this is Gmail vcard export for the contact:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
FN:Han Solo Skywalker
N:Skywalker;Han;Solo;;
END:VCARD

I can confirm. I added a new contact in Google "Han Solo Skywalker" and
after sync, it is imported in the app as "Han Skywalker".
