So can you post the output of

lpstat -p

then?

And can you also attach an error_log during which you have manually
enabled the printer and the printer got automatically disabled?

2016-06-27 Thread crottl
Well, thats's exactly my problem: The printer queue toggles its state to
"Stopped" / "Disabled" within about 10 seconds of me having manually re-
enabled it. I did print a job here -- or at least I *tried* printing a
PDF.

Unfortunately, your error_log is not capturing the execution of a job.

Is your print queue enabled and accepting jobs?

Please attach an error_log which contains the execution of a job which
did not print for you.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1584367] Re: Samsung printer automatically diabled; cannot print

2016-06-25 Thread crottl
Hiya Till, thanks for your help so far.

In the process of checking my PC according to the link you provided I
figured out why my machine behaved in such an erratic way. My Sophos AV
scanner blocked printer detection; after I deactivated Sophos the
printer installed perfectly fine.

You need the Samsung ULD to install the printer under Ubuntu. Printing
is still not possible -- I verified the symptoms on a different PC.

Here is the output you requested.

Cheers, Chris

Please go to

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

and follow the instructions of the section "Printer detection"/"USB
printer" and post the results here.

Also run the command

sudo lsusb -vvv 2>&1 | tee lsusb-vvv.log

in a terminal and attach the output file.

Do not compress any files and do not pack them together.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1584367] Re: Samsung printer automatically diabled; cannot print

2016-06-24 Thread crottl
Good morning Till, my bad!

I totally forgot to mention that although the lsusb command sees my USB
printer as "Bus 002 Device 010: ID 04e8:3297 Samsung Electronics Co.,
Ltd ML-191x/ML-252x Laser Printer" the printer config tool won't detect
it.

Out of about thirty shots my printer got recognized / installed two
times by plug-and-play but the result was the same as avbove: No
printing, the printer got deactivated within seconds.

I got so frustrated after spending a few hours of fiddling around and
googling I tried a shot in the dark by using the lpd option -- and went
on to print my airline tickets on a Windows machine ;)

About using Samsung software: Some time in the process I downloaded the
Samsung Unified Linux Driver (ULD) and installed it following their docs
hoping that might fix it but it didn't...

So: No USB Samsung printer detection and if the printer gets detected no
printing -- this is valid for both scenarios (with or without the
Samsung ULD).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1584367] Re: Samsung printer automatically diabled; cannot print

2016-06-24 Thread Till Kamppeter
I see that you access the printer through the URI

lpd://localhost

meaning that an LPD server (port 515) must be on your local machine. Are
you running some daemon on your machine to access the printer via a
proprietary communication protocol? Some software you got somehow from
Samsung (download or a CD supplied with the printer)?

You should try two possibilities:

1. If you use software from Samsung, use it completely, not use only the
communication daemon (if there is one) but also the PPD files supplied
by Samsung.

2. If you want to use the software supplied with Ubuntu Linux, run
system-config-printer (printer tool reachable from the System Settings)
and click "Add printer" at the top. Then a dialog appears in which
available printers are detected, first the local (USB, parallel, ...)
ones and after around 10 or 15 seconds the network printers (note that
your printer must be connected and turned on during this process).
Select your printer and then proceed through the wizard.

Please check andf try, especially (2).
