It does not work from the app drawer either, that's the 1rst thing I tried. This means the snap does not include the mir QPA and/or doesn't connect to mir-libs? Not a unity8 bug. Are you launching it from the terminal? That's not supported, you need to run it from the app drawer or via ubuntu-app-launch.
