Happens often also in Ubuntu 16.04.2, maybe in combination with standy.

Title:
nm-applet shows no connections (cannot control Network Manager)

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
From the 2/19/06 upgrade of the network-manager and nm-applet
packages, nm-applet no longer shows any network connections. It only
shows the "wired network disconnected" icon and left-clicking it shows
the grayed out "Wired Network" option and nothing else. The wireless
network still seems to be initialized by Network Manager, I just have
no control over it via nm-applet. I have tried removing nm-applet and
network-manager and reinstalling them, but the same thing happens.
