  The audio only works on boot-up (the drumbeat at the login screen).  It does 
not work for any application once logged in.
  During the sound test, the first phase of testing worked (I heard the tone), 
but the second did not.

  The automatic bug title was "[ICH4 - Intel ICH5] PA test tone failed
  (alsa tone succeeded)", so I assume that it is a problem with
  PulseAudio.  Whether this really is a bug or a hardware compatibility
  issue, I don't know.  But I do have sound on Debian and Fedora, which
  are installed on the same machine, but different partitions, though it
  is a bit jumpy and does go out from time to time.  I do believe there
  are some hardware issues between ALSA or PulseAudio and my integrated
  audio hardware.  My hardware information is as follows:
