Previously, I had a set of outputs corresponding to various of the card's surround sound outputs, including (importantly) a 5.1 output, which I use. I also have an upmixing ALSA device defined in .asounrdrc which upmixes 2.0 sources to surround. X-Fi and defined ALSA devices are still visible in aplay -L etc, and function correctly when ALSA output is chosen (for example, in VLC).
