  2) xrandr --output default --rotate inverted
  2) Open another gnome-terminal

  In both the original and the new terminal, text has red and blue
  "shadows" caused by subpixel rendering that doesn't match up to the
  inverted pixel layout resulting from the screen being flipped 180
  degrees.

You should file the bug against rendering libraries and/or toolkits like
GTK, because FreeType only provides the facilities for horizontal and
vertical subpixel rendering, the rendering system has to keep track of
the screen orientation by itself.

I confirm that this still is an issue with ubuntu 14.04.

If I select RGBA for subpixel I get blurry fonts when the screen in
inverted. This is not an issue if I select grayscale for subpixel.

I can run further tests if needed.
