Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1755120] Re: Computers unusable following latest update to Ubuntu 16.04LTS. Computer unusable

2018-07-22 Thread Mark French
Hi Team,

This is to confirm that the above problem no longer exists.

As backups of all important files had been made, no significant data was
lost.  Ubuntu 16.04 was reinstalled and all subsequent updates since
then have been successful.

Thanks for your interest.

Mark French

[Touch-packages] [Bug 38022] Re: run-parts doesn't run script with sh extension

2018-07-22 Thread rychu
I completely agree with @dregad that it would help a lot if there is any
information about skipping a script because of a dot. I lost plenty of time
troubleshooting smartmontools exec command because of that.
IMO statement "If neither the --lsbsysinit option nor the --regex option is
given then the names must consist entirely of upper and lower case letters,
digits, underscores, and hyphens." isn't enough, on man page. I read it twice
and it didn't bring my attention and help me understand where my issue is. It
should be explicitly written that scripts with dots are skipped.

With default cron configuration you can only place a shell script to

2018-07-22 Thread teo1978

volume is muted

NOPE, because sometimes it does go back to normal without any action.
It's RANDOM, and that cannot possibly be expected behavior.

Muted Sound Indicator randomly remains red when no sound is playing

Status in ubuntu-themes package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Mute the main Ubuntu volume
  2. Play some short sound

  Expected behavior:
Obviously you won't hear the sound. While the sound plays, the indicator
should become red; then, when the sound is done playing and nothing else is
playing, either immediately or after a very short period (e.g. a couple of

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1738034] Re: Muted Sound Indicator randomly remains red when no sound is playing

2018-07-22 Thread teo1978
> sound indicator couldn't possibly cover all scenarios why music has
stopped playing

It can easily do so. It can become red when the amplitude of the output
waveform is non-zero and volume is muted, and go back to normal when
either the amplitude of the output goes to zero or the volume is
unmuted. THAT is the expected behavior.

Or, if the expected behavior was really the one you describe (only go
back to normal when unmuted), which would be pretty useless, then it
does not work either, because, as I said, it behaves randomly.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1738034] Re: Muted Sound Indicator randomly remains red when no sound is playing

2018-07-22 Thread teo1978
Oh, and by the way, often it does not even become red in the first place
when some sound starts playing while the volume is muted.

Both becoming red and going back to normal are COMPLETELY UTTERLY
RANDOM.

(or there's some logic behind it that is so convoluted that it is
incomprehensible and renders the "feature" of becoming red, to notify
you of something, completely useless)

Hello bugproxy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted debian-installer into bionic-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-
installer/20101020ubuntu543.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

OpenLDAP depends on old version of KRB5 which conflicts with other
  packages

Status in openldap package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Currently, Ubuntu 16.04's newest offered version of OpenLDAP is
version 2.4.42. This version depends on libgssapi3 which in turn
depends libkrb5 version 2.6. Many other common libraries (like
gssapi_krb5) depend on libkrb5 3.0. From what I can tell, OpenLDAP
version 2.4.44 fixes this issue, but it is not available from any of
the Ubuntu repo's. It would be fabulous if this could be fixed.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1763520] Re: after upgrade to bionic, printing fails without explanation / logs / debuggability

2018-07-22 Thread Steve Langasek
> Steve, which page size did you select when printing from evince?

I did not choose a page size. I used the defaults, which should have
been US Letter, as my locale is en_US.UTF-8 and my printer was purchased
in the US, and the files to be printed are formatted as US Letter.

In the printer properties, this is displayed as Printer Options -> Media
Size: Letter 8.5x11in

> Can you also attach the PDF file which fails to print from evince?

Here is a link to an example file which fails to print in this way.

Title:
[Dell OptiPlex 755] Intermittently GUI hangs with high xorg CPU% after
  launching applications

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
The problem is that after launching a few applications, the GUI may
become unresponsive, although this is not consistently reproducible.
When the GUI is unresponsive, it is correlated to high CPU utilization
  of xorg.

An example reproduction scenario is launch the following in order, and
quickly:
  startx
  xterm via twm
another xterm via the first xterm
  tmux
  firefox-esr
  bluetooth-manager
  pavucontrol

While the above are launching, maximize the xterm running tmux, and
the GUI immediately becomes unresponsive. For example, Ctrl+Alt+Fn
  don't respond.

After this, I logged in via ssh, attached to tmux, launched htop,
copied htop output, which shows xorg at 94.6 CPU%.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1738034] Re: Muted Sound Indicator randomly remains red when no sound is playing

2018-07-22 Thread Khurshid Alam
> NOPE, because sometimes it does go back to normal without any action.
> Both becoming red and going back to normal are COMPLETELY UTTERLY RANDOM.

You keep saying these random behaviors. But I am unable to reproduce any
of them on 18.04 & 18.10. Can you explain, how to reproduce in a
concise way?

And about sound indicator staying red after music stops, as I explained
it is intended behavior. Once a explicit user action is requested, the
program shouldn't do anything until that specific user action is
completed. This is in-line with ux design & concept (I discussed this
with previous dev). So I can't change anything in this area.

Status in ubuntu-themes package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Mute the main Ubuntu volume
  2. Play some short sound

  Expected behavior:
Obviously you won't hear the sound. While the sound plays, the indicator
should become red; then, when the sound is done playing and nothing else is
playing, either immediately or after a very short period (e.g. a couple of
seconds), the indicator should go back to its normal color.

  Observed behavior:
Sometimes it behaves as expected, but sometimes it will remain red forever,
until you unmute it.

  It's utterly random.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1746419] Re: bond parameters are not changed by 'netplan apply'

Title:
bond parameters are not changed by 'netplan apply'

Status in netplan:
  Confirmed
Status in nplan package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I have a yaml file as follows:

  network:
  version: 2
  ethernets:
  bonddevs:
  match:
  name: ens[78]
  bonds:
  bond0:
  interfaces: [bonddevs]
  parameters:
  mode: active-backup
  mii-monitor-interval: 1
  addresses:
  - 10.10.10.1/24

Say I decide that 1s is too frequent for the MII interval, and I want to
change the interval to 2s.

If I change that in the yaml, then run
  # netplan generate
  # netplan apply
  # cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0|grep "MII Polling Interval (ms)"
  MII Polling Interval (ms): 1000

In other words, the change has not been applied.

  Running netplan --debug apply prints:
DEBUG:device bond0 operstate is up, not replugging

So I wondered if bringing the bond down would help. It does not:
  # ip link set dev bond0 down
  # netplan apply
  # cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0|grep "MII Polling Interval (ms)"
  MII Polling Interval (ms): 1000

  However, deleting the link works:
  # ip link del dev bond0
  # netplan apply
  # cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0|grep "MII Polling Interval (ms)"
  MII Polling Interval (ms): 2000

  This is counter-intuitive behaviour.
Ideally, I would like a regular netplan apply to work without deleting the
bond.
However, a changed to the docs to make this clear would be OK.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1655584] Re: systemd-udevd busyloops when nvidia kernel module fails to load

2018-07-22 Thread Andrea Bocci
Something similar happens on a laptop with both an integrated Intel
card, and a discrete Nvidia card: systemd-udev keeps loading and
unloading the nvidia modules.

Title:
systemd-udevd busyloops when nvidia kernel module fails to load

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On a machine where nvidia-367 is installed, but the driver won't attach (due
to
the nvidia card being older and requiring legacy drivers), systemd-udevd
repeatedly attempts to load it anyway, causing high CPU and memory usage. I
observed the systemd-udevd process at 98% CPU usage and 2.5G RSS reported by
top(1); restarting the service reduces resource usage momentarily, but it
appears to be climbing back up (I suspect the number of events is growing).

Workaround is of course installing the correct driver package, but udevd
really
ought not behave like this if something fails to load.

  Some journal entries for systemd-udevd.service:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1771033] Re: [needs-packaging] python3-avahi is missing in Ubuntu/debian

  [needs-packaging] python3-avahi is missing in Ubuntu/debian

Status in avahi package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in avahi package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
Under Ubuntu 18.04 if you install the package Gajim the local account
is permanently disabled because of missing dependencies.

  https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/issues/9125

  The required package is python3-avahi

The python3-avahi package is missing, apt-get is unable to find it.

This is a vital feature for us, we use Gajim internally without
internet, and this simply works, no adding accounts, no information or
messages sent over the internet, it all works locally.

I hope this package can be added, if this is the wrong place to file
this bug I applologize. I don't have a lot of experience reporting
  bugs.

When I boot my new Ubuntu 18.04LTS install on my ASUS flipbook I see
the splash screen as expected. The boot continues and it reaches the
point where you would expect to see the login screen. I see what
appears to be a non-backlighted blank black screen. If I wait until
all hard drive activity ceases and then type in my password and press
enter the login completes and I am presented a normal Ubuntu desktop.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1782925] Re: No me deja usar NVIDIA 304.135

2018-07-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-304.135.run is not supported by Ubuntu and so this
bug is invalid.

To support older NVIDIA hardware please try:
  sudo apt install nvidia-340

If that didn't work then try downloading this:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/304.135-0ubuntu0.16.04.2/+build/13701309

-

NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-304.135.run no es compatible con Ubuntu, por lo que
este error no es válido.

Para admitir hardware NVIDIA antiguo, intente:
   sudo apt install nvidia-340

Si eso no funcionó, intente descargar esto:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/304.135-0ubuntu0.16.04.2/+build/13701309

Title:
XPS 13 9350 black screen with latest kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
With any Ubuntu variant I've tried (Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu
Budgie), the graphical installer works correctly, but on every post-
install login, the screen goes black at the disk decryption screen.

The kernel version post-install is 4.14.0-29-generic.

Other things seem to be working. If I'm careful, I can enter the disk
decryption password and tell (via sounds) that I've gotten through to
the login screen, but the screen remains dark.

This happens with standard or minimal installs.

If I then try to boot with the previous kernel--4.15.0-20-generic--
  everything works flawlessly.

The only non-standard thing about this system is that I replaced the
onboard wireless card with an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8625.

  ---

I don't have a clue about kernel debugging, but I can provide further
  system info as needed.
