Hi.

Hi, I don't know if this is the best place to report this, but I can't
 find any alternative contact address,

See http://trac-hacks.org/#FeedbackandSuggestions :)

so here goes: there were a number of tickets on TracHacks.org updated
by some kind of spambot earlier today.

Thanks for the hint. Spam removed, spamvertised domain added as pattern to
BadContent.

makes use of Trac, but this list is about Trac itself, not about projects

Re: [Trac] Possible to revoke all permissions from anonymous and still have a usable landing page?

2010-01-27 Thread Michael Renzmann
Hi.

I'd like to lock down my Trac installation so that anonymous users
can't view anything - but this means when a user (even a legitimate
user) first comes to http://my.trac.com the landing page is a very
unfriendly message telling them to login - not great for client
confidence. I'd like the start page to be a custom page, or at the
 very least http://my.trac.com/login.

The following plugins might help:

yes, that's a known issue, see http://trac-hacks.org/ticket/3206 (which

[Trac] Re: Spam Filter Configuration

2009-05-17 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

I'm facing spam messages on trac. I want to maintain the access free:
no user authentification and no captcha. I used various filter
strategy combinations, but all of them have failed. What filter
strategy do you use on trac site[0] to avoid spam ?

I cannot talk for the admins of trac.edgewall.org. However, on
trac-hacks.org we use TracSpamFilter (with all but the Akismet stuff being
enabled) and some custom mod_security rules.

The mod_security rules block POSTs for new tickets that have author set to
anonymous, component set to SELECT A HACK and contain at least one
link. This filters a common type of spam that before hit the site.
This has been implemented as mod_security rules because it was easier for
me than writing a new filter strategy. At some point this will be changed.

The rest gets run through a large amount of regular expressions, see
http://trac-hacks.org/wiki/BadContent .

[Trac] Re: Requirements for a new and improved Gantt plugin

 to add that return:

/wiki/add is the user page of user add. No idea why someone added
content that is expected to be rendered with the gantt-processor, but it's
unlikely that this plugin gets installed on trac-hacks.org.

2009-04-07 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

I'd like to close a component for reporting, but do not want to
invalidate the existing tickets in this component.

 thoughts?

Just do it, it should not harm existing tickets. Deleting a component just
makes it unavailable for future selection, but does not remove it from any
already existing ticket. The component of a ticket is a text field (that
gets populated during ticket creation), not a reference to some separate
table with all the components that are available now.

[Trac] Re: Trac plugin contract development

2009-03-30 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

FWIW, I'd be ok with trac-hacks.org supporting a bounty-based development
model in addition to what is there already. We could support such
development by providing resources as we do already for traditional
community-developed hacks, as long as the resulting code will be released
under a recognized FOSS license.

Personally, I'm not in favour of any bidding-style models. Bounties are
fine, as they allow a group of people to throw their money in a pot if
they are interested in a similar piece of software.

I think that the Trac community should not even consider trying to involve
itself into things like providing legal services for the contracting
parties, escrow services or mediation - this is far beyond our scope. If
such services are deemed to be required , there are other platforms which
provide them (but certainly not for free).

However, these are just my 2 cents.

2009-03-24 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

This behaviour started some time ago, I did not experience such
problems before. Maybe when trac-hacks moved to the new server?

I'm all open for suggestions where to look for why this happens.

I also filed a ticket in the trac-hacks bug tracker:
 http://trac-hacks.org/ticket/4724

I noticed that ticket when it was created, and intended to look into
possible reasons. However, so far I had no success, then was sidetracked
by other things and forgot to reply to it. Sorry.

or is there some evil firewall or whatnot hackery in place that
 mysteriously strips down permissions?

At least on the server side there is no such thing that could look modify
zip files while they are downloaded.

[Trac] Note for users of the spam filter plugin

2009-02-06 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi all.

The IPBlacklistFilterStrategy / ip_blacklist.py of the spam filter plugin
per default queries the blacklists bsb.empty.us and sc.surbl.org. The
SURBL project recently announced [1] that the individual lists (which
includes sc.surbl.org) will be shut down on February 28th, 2009. This may
have an impact on the spam protection of Trac installations.

If not done yet, you should check your trac.ini, section [spam-filter],
option ip_blacklist_servers. If the option is missing, you should add
something like

ip_blacklist_servers = bsb.empty.us, multi.surbl.org

to override the plugin defaults. If the option is already there and
references sc.surbl.org you should change that reference to
multi.surbl.org.

See also ticket #8032 on t.e.o [2].

[Trac] Re: What plugin(s) does Trac-Hacks use for blogging?

2009-02-04 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

Anyone know what plugin(s) trac-hack.org uses for blogging?

Yes, currently that is [1]. When we switch to Trac 0.11, however, that
will change to [2].

Unless I am blind (and I may very well be) the ieat one's own dog
food/i section on the trac-hack.org front page does not denote how
the blogging is achieved (within Trac).

True, that section needs to be updated. Some of the plugins mentioned
there are no longer in use, but others have been added and are not
mentioned. That will be fixed soon.

[Trac] Re: Unusual amounts of spam on trac-hacks

2009-01-27 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

 http://trac-hacks.org/ticket/4326#comment:2

That comment is already gone.

What is interesting is not just that they insert annoying spam links, but
also really mess up the ticket - the title, of it, everything:

I've seen that on other trac-driven sites more than once. Not sure if that
is just some kind of generic spam bot that messes with all form fields, or
if meanwhile someone wrote a bot that actually knows about Trac
specifics.

[Trac] Re: Announcing new extensions to this list ?

2009-01-12 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi all.

I'd be +1 on a plugins-announce list. Dunno if this list is right for it
or not. Every once in awhile I'll be perusing trac-hacks and notice a new
extension and wonder when did this get here?

The timeline on trac-hacks.org is also available as RSS feed - this is how
I keep track of what happens there. The benefit of this method is that new
plugins automatically appear on ones radar, even if the author does not
announce it.

However, I agree that a place for announcing new plugin releases would be
helpful, preferably a mailing list.

In terms of moving trac-hacks.org to my server I was already thinking of
adding mailing lists to the services that are provided on t-h.o. My
initial idea was one list where t-h users can discuss site-related issues,
but given that there is enough interest other lists (for announcements,
support for plugin users, ...) could easily be added.

I'm also +1 for anything that increases plugin exposure and organization
in general, but will opt out of general suggestions (for now).

There is a feature I like about some blogging systems (WordPress,
Serendipity): a plugin manager. It allows to easily access, browse and
search a central plugin catalogue. Once you found an interesting plugin
you can install it with a single click.

In my opinion, such a feature would be a big plus for Trac. It could be
implemented as plugin, and in fact the one click installation is just an
slight extension of the mechanism that allows installing plugins by
uploading an egg with the browser. It could tell the admin if a new
version of an already-installed plugin is available, and allow for an easy
update. Stuff like this.

Comments?

Hi.

For the quality issue, I wonder if one of the vote plug-in's could be

Yes, of course.

Moving trac-hacks to 0.11 is on my list, but has no high priority at this

finished first :)

It would be nice if you could ping me every once in a while about this idea.

Is there something I must do after adding the users? I've tried

[Trac] Re: Strange issue with Trac 0.11.1 + FastCGI

2008-10-24 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi all.

Sorry for replying to my own post, but I got a little closer:

Most of the resources (images, links to other pages, etc.) are referenced
using the local path I define in DocumentRoot for the corresponding Apache
 vhost.

In the situation I've described in my last post, SCRIPT_NAME is set to
what DOCUMENT_ROOT is. However, this changes once I use something like:

ScriptAlias /trac /var/www7trac/cgi-bin/trac.fcgi/

In this case, SCRIPT_NAME gets set to /trac and everything works as
intended. This issue is most probably not caused by Trac, but either by
Apache or, more likely, mod_fcgid. I'm not even sure whether this is a bug
or expected behaviour - any hints welcome.

At this point it seems I have two options:

 1. Go with ScriptAlias /trac ... and try fiddling with mod_rewrite to
make Trac appear under http://domain.tld/ rather than
http://domain.tld/trac/.

 2. Use mod_wsgi instead of mod_fcgid for serving Trac. I tried that
already, and it works painless with Trac living at the root. But it adds
another dependency - mod_fcgid is already available and actively used to
serve some PHP stuff on the same server.

If anyone has some tips that could ease my decision, please let me know :)

Bye, Mike

[Trac] Strange issue with Trac 0.11.1 + FastCGI

2008-10-23 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi all.

I'm currently trying to move an existing Trac instance to a new server. On
the old server, the setup was Apache 2.2, mod_python, Trac 0.10.4. The new
server now uses Apache 2.2, mod_fcgid and Trac 0.11.1.

The migration is now basically done (thanks by the way to coderanger for
helping to get rid of some of the issues I was facing!). Only one issue
remains:

Most of the resources (images, links to other pages, etc.) are referenced
using the local path I define in DocumentRoot for the corresponding Apache
vhost.

For example:

VirtualHost *:80
  ...
  DocumentRoot /var/www/000-default
  ...
  ScriptAlias / /var/www/trac/cgi-bin/trac.fcgi/
  ...
/VirtualHost

results in stuff like:

...
link rel=help href=/var/www/000-default/wiki/TracGuide /
...

If I change DocumentRoot to something else, the links in the HTML that
Trac generates changes accordingly.

It seems to me that something is wrong with the environment variables that
are passed to trac.fcgi, most probably wrong or missing information. At
this point I'm pretty clueless about how to investigate the issue further,
any ideas?

[Trac] Re: stealth spams in many places

2007-08-24 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

I just want to warn Trac users that invisible spams links are being
inserted by spammers in many Trac Wikis usually the links are put at
the top (or bottom) of the page with a special style that renders the
links invisible when looked in html mode

Using the spamfilter plugin along with a properly maintained list of
forbidden words should help against that problem.

Another option is ScallyWhack; in the current release it helps by simply
blocking all wiki edits, tickets and comments to tickets that contain
http:// or https:// from anonymous visitors, but I want to make that a bit
smarter once I find a bit of time for it.

[Trac] Re: Mirroring a trac site

2007-07-23 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

You can, but it's not advised; you might end up with corrupted databases.
 Better to do:
  trac-admin trac-env path hotcopy /backup/dir/

 and then rsync the /backup/dir/.

One thing to take care of would be to disable modification permissions for
users on the mirrors. Otherwise changes done to a mirror will get lost,
which would be pretty annoying for the users at least.

I once started to work on a script that creates a set of static html pages
out of a Trac installation. It took care to remove references to the
interactive pages (such as new ticket or custom query). Unfortunately
the development stalled, but it's not off my to-do list yet, as the
problem as such (the need to mirror our trac site) still exists :)

[Trac] Re: Viewing changesets which contain binary files

2007-07-09 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

These include word-processing files (.odts) and PDFs. When I view a
changeset containing changes to these files, the page displays the
diffs to the binaries. Is there any way to stop is behavior?

Usually this should be possible by making sure that the right MIME type is
set in the repository for the according files.

Sometimes there are situations where that does not help/work. One example
is the repository of madwifi.org which contains uuencoded binary files -
viewing diffs of these files is absolutely useless. Thus I wrote a patch
for Trac 0.10.x that allows to disable viewing diffs based on the
filename.

The patch is available at [1] (and another one at [2] to remove the
unneeded debug messages of the first patch). It introduces a new
configuration option called suppress_file_diffs in section [changeset].
As an example, to suppress rendering the diffs of files like
something.uu use:

[changeset]
...
suppress_file_diffs = *.uu

To define more than one pattern use a comma to separate them.

[Trac] Re: accountmanager for 0.10.3 unstable?

2007-05-28 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

I can't run trac without the accountmanager (way too much spam), but
while it is unstable like this the web site is not very useable (anonymous
editing disabled because of spam). what can I do?

My 0.02$: you should reconsider the measures you take to fight spam. A
good anti-spam measure ideally is one that prevents the bad guys from
doing bad things while having no impact on legitimate users. In that terms
the idea to force all (even the good) users to register before they can
contribute to your site is a pretty bad solution. In addition, spam bots
become more and more clever, and we already saw some that were able to
register before they start spamvertizing.

Since you're running Trac 0.10, you should evaluate the SpamFilter plugin
[1]. It has various filtering strategies, such as regex filtering or
querying IP blacklists.

ScallyWhack [2] might be another option; that's a rule set for
mod_security to catch spam posted to trac-driven websites. ScallyWhack is
work in progress - the rules work great on madwifi.org for some time now,
but the documentation must be improved (which is what I'm working on at
this time).

Last but not least both options might be combined to provide better results.

[Trac] Re: ticket formatting

2007-04-23 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

Trac compressed it all into 1. Issue A 2. Issue B.

Consider using proper wiki formatting, then your text gets properly
displayed. For example:

=== cut ===
 1. Item A
 2. Item B
=== cut ===
(note the leading space in front of the list items)

If you want to retain the original format of the text, try:
=== cut ===
{{{
1. Item A
2. Item B
}}}
=== cut ===
(usefull to paste output of shell commands)

Last but not least, you could insert line breaks with: [[BR]]

[Trac] RFC: Caching for Trac

2007-02-08 Thread Michael Renzmann

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all.

As some of you might already know, I'm running the Trac installation on
madwifi.org. We're happy with Trac, it's a great tool that we don't want
to miss anymore. But there is one issue that we would like to see
addressed: performance.

Background
==
Our handicap is that the server that currently hosts madwifi.org

a) hosts several sites
b) has a slow CPU (P3-800)
c) runs on Apache 2.0 with mpm_prefork and can not switch to, for example,
mpm_worker - another site depends on mod_php, and mod_php doesn't like
mpm_worker

The site will move to a dedicated server soon, which should mitigate the
performance issues we experience (as described below) a bit - no more
mod_php, so mpm_worker will finally be possible. However, the available
CPU power won't be much better: P3-850 instead of P3-800. Changing to a
more powerful server is not (yet) possible due to a lack of money. We have
to take what we get.

The problem
===
For every request to a Trac-driven site, Trac has to render the content
first. In case of a wiki page as an example that would be something like:
get the markup for the page from the database and process it, getting the
HTML tag soup as result that then is delivered to the requesting client.

The more complex the source of a requested page is, the more CPU time is
consumed by Trac to render it. An example for such a case is our
compatibility list at http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility - if that page
gets hit by several clients in parallel, the server is getting really
slow.

(Yes, I'm aware that reducing the complexity of the mentioned page will be
a way to relieve the pain a bit, and actually that is work in progress -
but that's not the point here :)).

On the other hand, the majority of the frequently requested pages seem to
be rarely changed. So the question for me is: why should Trac compute the
same page over and over again when most of the time the result will be the
same as for the last request?

The suggested solution: caching
===
In theory, it shouldn't be hard to store the result of rendering a page
and serve subsequent requests for that page out of the cache. Adding
support for conditional HTTP requests (If-None-Match and If-Modified-Since
headers) at the same time could help to reduce the used bandwidth.

The easiest way to handle cache updates would be to remove cached results
when the corresponding page gets modified. Next time that page is
requested, it is rendered (including the changes) and the result gets
stored in the cache again.

Caching might become a problem for really dynamic sections of a Trac site,
such as the reports. But it should relieve the server for mostly-static
parts, which - at least on madwifi.org - make the majority of the site.

Another issue that should be considered is that pages could look different
for different users - depending on their permissions. That could be solved
in various ways, for example:
* no caching for pages requested by a non-anonymous user
* implement a per-user cache (needs to be wiped when permissions for a
user are changed)
* take the actual permissions into account when storing and retrieving
pages to/from the cache

Comments?
=
I'd be interested in comments on the sketched idea. Even more, it would be
great if there was someone who would be interested in helping to implement
it :)

[Trac] Re: Cant assign ticket to user

2006-12-13 Thread Michael Renzmann

Our Trac install is using PAM for controlling access. We are just in
the roll out phase so we added another user, gave that user TRAC_ADMIN
permissions but they don't show up in the Assign to: select (we have
restrict owner set to true). We have restarted apache and that did
 nothing.

If not done yet, the user needs to log in, go to the Settings page,
enter name and/or e-mail address there and save that data. This will
create a valid session, which is needed to be able to assign tickets to
that user.

[Trac] Re: Frames like behaviour in trac

2006-11-15 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

lars_p_fink wrote:
To summarize I would like to create a trac wiki page with a behaviour
 similar to html frames.

On one side of the page I'd like to display a TracNav menu with links
to files in the subversion repository (for example [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
When clicking on a link in the TracNav menu it should update the
content on the other side of the page with the source code from the
 TracBrowser. Is this possible somehow?

Summary: you want a navigation pane/box/tab/whatever that is available
on every page of your Trac installation and, optionally, always visible?

If you're working with Trac 0.10.x, check TravNav's ticket #264:
http://svn.ipd.uka.de/trac/javaparty/ticket/264

After applying the latest version of the patch attached to this ticket
(irequestfilter-2.diff) you can use the result of TracNav from within
the templates used to build the HTML for each page delivered by Trac.
The ticket gives an example on how to make use of this feature.

The position of the resulting div and the always visible stuff can be
achieved with CSS. Not trivial, but also no magic necessary IMO.

[Trac] Re: Inserting wiki pages using SQL?

Hi.

generation process. I can script the export and the formatting, I don't
know how to create wiki pages without using the web interface.

You could use:

trac-admin /path/to/tracenv wiki import page file

or

trac-admin /path/to/tracenv wiki load directory

The first command imports the content of the specified file to the
specified page, the second command imports all files in the specified
directory as wiki pages (however, I'm not sure how the wiki page name is
determined in that case - probably by taking the name of each file as
name for the page).

[Trac] Re: Trac subversion

2006-11-03 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

As far as I can see, the integration with subversion is read-only. That
is, I cannot check out/in files through Trac. Is that correct? Any info
 is appreciated.

You can download files, directories and diffs from the browser, but you
can not commit changes through it. I vaguely remember that this has been
discussed before, but couldn't find the corresponding thread(s) in the
archives (to be honest, I didn't search too long).

[Trac] Re: Usage of trac (was: Re: Trac users)

2006-11-02 Thread Michael Renzmann

Hi.

From trac's website, trac is ment as a tool for web based project
 management.
But in fact, does anyone use it in that sense?

Yes. The MadWifi project uses it for the announced purpose, including all
the various components that are offered by Trac and/or external plugins.
We definitely don't want to miss it anymore - it made our life a lot
easier.

Is there an example plugin available that takes this road?

Hi.

 I can't find a way to do this :(.

You should have a delete attachment button once you're watching the
attachment. You most probably need to have TICKET_ADMIN permission to
see the ticket.
