Re: [Trisquel-users] BBC videos.
Wow. Great catch Legimet! Automatically downloading proprietary software, sounds lovely! Perhaps you could file a bug about this to make sure it doesn't end up in Trisquel.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Crowdfunding the Novena Open Laptop
Is it possible to use Trisquel on the Novena main board? As dadix said the use of the Novena laptop is limited. But as a fixed PC I would love to use just the Novena main board.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FCC tryanny and Mozilla’s crazy plan to fix net neutrality
I just love these mom and apple pie campaigns in the States. Who wouldn't want to Save the Internet, Save the Whales or Save the Rainforests?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Crowdfunding the Novena Open Laptop
No, but the infamously close to perfectly being freedom-friendly Debian should.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox 29 (Australis)
Because that would leave ABrowser unmaintained, and thus open to security and compatibility problems. Australis is terrible, of course... so why not have CTR included by default as part of Trisquel? Trisquel is already noted for having a non-default GNOME layout when first installed, so why not have a non-default browser UI as well? And, if a user doesn't like the way the new ABrowser UI looks, CTR will allow them to customise it right away, without needing to install the add-on themselves.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox 29 (Australis)
I don't get what's so bad about this new interface. I think it's an improvement. I really like the new icon-based menu, the new bookmarks toolbar means I finally don't need the classic menu bar anymore, and not having to use the old add-on bar saves vertical space (some icons for add-ons were locked to the right of the add-on bar previously; now, they can be moved around like the rest of them).
[Trisquel-users] Keepod: re-inventing the wheel
This BBC web site article by, amazingly a Click journalist, Click is the BBCs technology programme so they should know better, implies a technology thats been around for almost 15 years, the OS on a USB stick, is new and revolutionary: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27346567 I've a sense of disappointment and deja vu about this. It reminds me of MS attempts to hijack the OLPC project by pushing Windows Starter edition. This is just the same except its Googles Android OS with its apps and Play Store. In my view the entire premise is anachronistic and patronising. Why should children anywhere be expected, or even encouraged, to use low powered laptops with simplistic interfaces? I think children should be introduced to standard laptops and computers as soon as they're able.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox 29 (Australis)
I agree with you. Although the previous interface was pretty good and even if I was accustomed to it, I like the new one, that is quite an improvement. Moreover, a new and revamped design, a smoother interface has the advantage to convince potential new users, that Firefox/Abrowser has nothing less than, for instance, Chrome (they were yet equally fast, but what about those good-looking tabs of Chrome's), even if being proprietary software is a sufficient reason not to use it...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Crowdfunding the Novena Open Laptop
Thanks for your reply! Can you explain why Trisquel will not run on the Novena main board please? As far as I know, Triquel stems from Ubuntu and Ubuntu stems from Debian. In which aspect differs Trisquel from Debian? On the Novena crowd funding site it says: All configurations will come with Debian (GNU/Linux) pre-installed, but of course you can build and install whatever distro you prefer!
Re: [Trisquel-users] BBC videos.
Well that is why we use Abrowser / GNU Icecat / Iceweasel etc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keepod: re-inventing the wheel
I think this is a good idea except for the google and proprietary software parts. $7 doesn't buy much of a laptop these days.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Crowdfunding the Novena Open Laptop
Novena is some ARM flavor of hardware architecture. Debian supports currently 9 archs, Ubuntu 5 and Trisquel only 2.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keepod: re-inventing the wheel
It's just a persistent Live USB, which can be created using the Startup Disk Creator. All you have to do is specify the ISO image and the size of the persistence file. I use a Trisquel live USB on the school Macs. The only problem is that the wifi requires nonfree firmware, so I carry my USB wifi adapter.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BBC videos.
The OpenH264 source code is BSD licensed and free software. But I have no idea about the license of the binaries, and we definitely don't want pre-built binaries. Fedora probably will remove the functionality because they don't want software to automatically download pre-built binaries, and because H.264 is patented. [1] For Trisquel, I think there are 2 solutions: 1) Integrate the (free) OpenH264 source code in Abrowser and remove the automatic download functionality 2) Just remove the functionality and use gstreamer codecs as it already does. Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox 29 (Australis)
Agreed. I too find the new interface to be an improvement. I particularly like having the old addon bar removed. I constantly get support calls from users that have closed the addon bar and can't remember how to get it back. The design was horribly broken. Having said that there are some extensions that do not play well with the new design (like quickproxy). But that's not an issue that a simple update to the extension cannot resolve.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox 29 (Australis)
I like the new homepage: attached.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox 29 (Australis)
Well, soe people find it too Chrome-esque. And as fine with it as I am (I'm using it right now) perhaps a less Chrome-esque tab bar will do it wonders.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Work On Trisquel 7 Has Begun
This is great news. I look forward to giving it a try.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keepod: re-inventing the wheel
Most if not all computers are set to not boot from the USB and the BIOS setup is locked where I live.
