[Trisquel-users] Anybody using an nVidia 650GTX with jxself's kernel?
I'm asking because the July Phoronix round up of free software driver GPU performance has it that the 650GTX is the Fermi/Kepler card with gpuclocking support and I'm lusting after the triple head it would bring. So, if you're using this combo is it stable-ish enough?

IMO email, formerly e-mail or electronic mail, is a communication method not a protocol per se. Protocols are used when you use email, but they can be anything from the SMTP/IMAP/POP internet set, through UUCP and Fidonet (older open email formats) to proprietary offerings and things which belong in history like X.400. Essentially what you've asked is 'is the telephone a protocol?' Yes there are phone protocols, but the telephone itself isn't one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] need examples of non-free format abandonment
ISTR a web article by an author/writer back in the day about how by the time of Office 95 Microsoft had abandoned Word v2 format. He was annoyed to say the least, because as a writer he needed long term access to his text. Fortunately he hadn't thrown away the old computer with Word 2 on. He moved to ASCII as it was then. I can't find the article again on a quick search, but it might be worth a dig. You might also try writing to the secretary of your local/regional GUIDE (z/OS) and VMSHARE (z/VM) user groups. Mainframe owners were on the case of open formats when I started in software back in '84. Unless they've changed lots don't mention W$ to them, it's not polite, generally mainframe people hate it with a passion.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
I use Debain on my ARM boxen and always go for the uk debian.org server because some of the less well known servers can be dodgy like this. By extension a trisquel.info server, such as the one you're having problems with, should not be behaving in this way. But I dunno who the admin for it is. If it's Ruben et al again then it'll get fixed... eventually :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] need examples of non-free format abandonment
I would say that's an improvement as .doc, .xls, and .ppt were binary and not standardized. At least with the new formats, they are XML based and more open even if Microsoft doesn't follow the ISO standard.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I've been constantly being disconnected from services such as Thunderbird and Pidgin.
Are you also using the latest Pidgin? https://launchpad.net/~pidgin-developers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
Re: [Trisquel-users] need examples of non-free format abandonment
Appleworks is a great example. The current version of iWork cannot open the older Appleworks format. Older versions of iWork that can read them are not available from Apple and may be difficult to come by and the PowerPC translation layer, Rosetta cannot be installed on OS X Lion and up making it impossible even to use Appleworks itself. There is an article called "Abandoning Appleworks"; I won't link it here as it suggests using nonfree software. It does show how much of a headache it is to migrate away from Appleworks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Learning self-defense
Any other ideas on how to learn self-defense? Hm... • EFF website: https://www.eff.org/ , specially https://www.eff.org/issues/privacy and EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense project: https://ssd.eff.org/ The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has created this Surveillance Self-Defense site to educate the American public about the law and technology of government surveillance in the United States, providing the information and tools necessary to evaluate the threat of surveillance and take appropriate steps to defend against it. • DuckDuckGo's instructions at http://fixtracking.com/ (beware some non-100%-FaiF recommended software) How-to stop getting tracked in your Browser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] need examples of non-free format abandonment
Best example: the microsoft works database. Microsoft works is an old office suite which has been abandoned years ago. If you have stored all your data in works formats, then good luck trying to convert them! I know that it's pretty hard when it comes to the database files.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is email a communication protocol?
Does Tox.im use a free communication protocol? I suppose that because it's free software, anyone can figure out how the protocol works? In practice, at the moment, only Tox.im uses its protocol right?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Icecat 30 and paypal login?
Try commenting out lines from /usr/lib/icecat/browser/defaults/preferences/vendor-icecat.js. Issues with IceCat are usually caused by some of the privacy settings in that file.
[Trisquel-users] Icecat 30 and paypal login?
Hi, After entering a password and email address on the paypal login page and hitting the 'submit' button, icecat is unresponsive. I get "loading, please wait', then nothing. When I close the browser session and try opening a new one, I get 'icecat is not responding..., and have to use 'killall icecat', before I am allowed to start new session. This happens regardless of whether noscript is running. I have paypal white-listed in noscript. Any ideas? -Dave Hunt
Re: [Trisquel-users] is email a communication protocol?
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email#Message_format for the format.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is email a communication protocol?
I'd say so, if it uses any of the free internet protocols, pop, smtp, or imap. Not sure about special protocols used in MS Exchange, Groupwise, or the like.
[Trisquel-users] is email a communication protocol?
It's a free communication protocol, right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] need examples of non-free format abandonment
Microsoft? They abandoned .doc and switched to OOXML (although .doc support is still there)
[Trisquel-users] need examples of non-free format abandonment
For example: a non-free software proprietor stops software/security updates to old-format, and introduces new-format, to encourage everyone to buy new-software. Links to articles would be great if you know of any.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
I downloaded some of them (Trisquel 7 now). Surely there must be a way to solve these mirroring problems? I've seen it quite a bit in Trisquel but never in other distros.

Your problem might well be a mirroring thing, wait a bit and try again.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
I've filed a bug about the missing updates https://trisquel.info/en/issues/5876
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
I tried an upgrade of Trisquel 7, and apt-get cannot download any updates from us.archive.trisquel.info (404 not found) on all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
These updates showed up on my Trisuel 6 too, but it can't download the packages from us.archive.trisquel.info.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
Just now I got some upgrade for the following packages: cups cups-bsd cups-client cups-common cups-ppdc ffmpeg gnupg gpgv libav-tools libavcodec53 libavdevice53 libavfilter2 libavformat53 libavutil51 libcups2 libcupscgi1 libcupsimage2 libcupsmime1 libcupsppdc1 libcurl3 libcurl3-gnutls libgcrypt11 libgudev-1.0-0 liblua5.1-0 libnss3 libnss3-1d libpostproc52 libswscale2 libudev0 linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic qemu qemu-common qemu-kvm qemu-utils rsyslog udev I highly doubt that these are all the missing packages but at least it's something.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
Amazing! Nothing has changed (month later) in terms of security updates. Think about what you said. Makes you wonder...

Well then that's good.

If VPN is an option, go with it. I am experiencing a good service from airvpn.org If VPN is not an option then Tor is probably your best option. ...assuming your problem is censorship related and not a poor ISP service. -- Teodorescu Petre trisquel.info | ceata.org | fsf.org | eff.org | riseup.net | airvpn.org | torproject.org | flattr.com |
[Trisquel-users] I've been constantly being disconnected from services such as Thunderbird and Pidgin.
Since today, I couldn't connect to Pidgin so I do my daily log in to Freenode webchat. As with Thunderbird, I can connect but from time to time I get a system notification (the one on the upper right corner that pops up) that I am being disconnected. Now, I am getting hunch that I might be tracked or monitored by some ICT body here because in Dubai I've gotten a lot more censorship (/r/nsfw_gif, /r/nsfw_gfys, etc), than in Qatar (some of you might rememeber that I'm from Qatar, and I actually just got here last week). I'm pretty sure Tor is pretty popular here, and I've been using Tor, though not as much as Abrowser. I am using ethernet cable by the way. Halp!
